Sorry its so long, but I did a copy and paste of this discussion on the Yahoo Surf forum. See what you think? Graham. Please do tell us more about the inherent overheat problems that are a result of a design flaw with the 1KZ engine. Could you also factor into your response the fact that the manufacturer of these engines (which is not Toyota) does not have a blind clue when they build them whether or not they are going into a Prado, Hilux Ute, Tokyo Taxi, Surf, Asia Bus, Dyna truck or a forklift and that somehow there is a design fault that only makes itself apparent when the engine is fitted to a Surf? Except in the case of extreme use (like pulling a trailer load close to design maximum or plowing along in sand or mud) a transmission cooler is not a solution to a problem. And in any event the effect of the transmission on radiator temperature is negligble. To make matters worse most trans-cooler installations tend to simply stick the trans cooler onto the front of the radiator. Where does the heat from the cooler go then ? > All Head services have found a cavitation problem with the water > pump, also compouded by poor water jacket design in the cylinder head > contact them 1800 646988 they will fax you a test procedure to check > this, Unfortunately although easy to diagnose with the righ test > proceedure, its not that easy to fix, I have had 2 now where the end > result was cracked heads, the symtoms you have described have been > early warning signs in both cracked cylinder heads which we in turn > originaly treated the symptoms and managed to reduce the overheat > situation short terms by other means, i.e. thermo fans, auto cooler, > Castle Hill Toyota also list an Australian condition thermostat, > approx $25 if I remember correctly. > All heads have remanufactured the rear water pump housing and water > pump impellor, and redesigned the cylinder head to incorporate a > bleed kit which doesnt allow any air pockets or cavitation to happen > thus increasing heat transfer and eliminating the weak point where > these heads crack. I take my hat off to them. I'm a bit of a bullshit artist myself, but these guys are experts. As recently as last week I compared the casting number of a 1KZ head fitted to a surf with the castng number of a current model Prado. Sadly for "All Heads" the numbers are identical, which means no revisions or alterations between the two parts.....Whoops. The themostat is a damm good idea though. But be warned I know that in the case of the 2L-TE the thermostat housings were different between the local and import model which meant that simply fitting a local Hi-lux diesel thermostat was a sure way to have an overheated engine, obviously this may not apply to the 1KZ-TE, but go into it with eyes open. > Ill leave them to break the news of the price to you though, its > pretty scary but may be the ultimate end result. > weird thing, I havent heard of any similar problems with the same > engine in other models, only surfs. Fitting at least two Hiclones will go a long way towards solving the problem, add a fuel cracking catalyst and your temperature (and fuel mileage problems) are a thing of the past.
