Poll of the week - Official Secrets The scenario..
You have signed the Official Secrets Act.
You see a document proving that the government has done something wrong (be that immoral or illegal) that you think would cause a public outcry if revealed.
But.. if you revealed it.. you'd be breaking the Act and thus.. breaching National Security.

I'd blab and to hell with the consequences. Especially if it was about Bush. Edited by: A Big Pink Yoga Muffin at: 1/3/04 19:11
Re: Poll of the week - Official Secrets
if it was something illegal for example bugging the secretary general off the united nations you a responsibility to the public
in typical gay tradition, i would 'create' a few extra details to the story to spice it up, mention it to a coupla queens and before you know it, everybody's talking about it! mwah ha ha
Re: Poll of the week - Official Secrets
if the story was big (i.e huge cover up of some sort ) i would blab and leave the country, move to an undisclosed location on a remote island, start a new identity and live the rest of my days watching my back wondering when "they" will find me and take me down.
Re: Poll of the week - Official Secrets
Well I am huge on trust and loyality... If I signed something like that I'd never reveal it... When a person tells me something I take the secret to my grave with me... The only time I would reveal something if they worked with Osama or some terrorist group...
Re: Poll of the week - Official Secrets
If it hurt an individual i woudl not say a thing, but when it comes to the government, i couldn't in good faith go on living watching them deceive the people who voted them into power. If i wasn't the person releasing the info, i would appreciate being aware of the governments, secret agenda, if you will
Re: Poll of the week - Official Secrets
Gawd - I never thought that I would see a Claire Short post on FMF - just keep her away from 'View' please!
I happen to think that if there is something of national importance and that there is a real moral issue at stake then maybe the act should be breached - but I have strong, very strong concerns.
As for the woman in question I don't think we can have much repsect for a cabinet member who felt so strongly that she waited until AFTER the war to resign.
Re: Poll of the week - Official Secrets
If I signed the act I would stick by it. I have many flaws, but I stick to my word.

Apart from the fact that espionage is illegal just about everywhere (are you really suggesting we abolish the intelligence services) It would be of greater concern to me if we weren't spying on the UN. There is a large amount of information of ptotential use to the government, and if it was being obtained without the other parties being aware then they were doing their job properly. The idea that the UN should be immune from spying is utterly preposterous.
