Poppy the koala joey
Poppy the koala joey
Poppy is a ‘pinkie’ – a koala joey so young she has no fur and no pouch. Sadly for Poppy, she also has no mum. Mum was sadly killed this morning on a Brisbane road by a careless motorist. Unfortunately we see this all too often here at the Australian Wildlife Hospital, and we can have up to 90 koalas admitted in the one month for treatment! In Poppy’s case, however, it was lucky that she was secured inside mum’s pouch at the time of the accident and survived the horrible ordeal. The rescue team rushed mum and bub straight in and they were just able to save the young joey’s life. She now has to adapt to having a human mum to care for her and feed her until she’s strong enough to look after herself. That could take quite some time, as joeys in this situation are given a fifty percent chance of survival. We will do everything we can to look after her and help her grow. Until next week, remember our wildlife emergency phone number is 1300 369 652, and please keep your eyes peeled and observe road signs when driving!
