RP Guide
There is a reason we have this. Some people just do not know how to role play. Well, this will help you succeed not only here, but at other RPGs as well.

Tense
We use generally past tense. If you are wondering why, it is because past tense is pretty much a universal writing tense.

Quote:
The two men jump across the bridge.

This is present tense.

Quote:
The two men jumped across the bridge.

This is past tense.

Point of View
We use the 3rd person point of view. This is the widely accepted RPG point of view. It gets very annoying when there are multiple people in a thread using third person and then all of a sudden you see a whole bunch of "I's" and "We's." Also, YOU are not doing these actions, your CHARACTER is. You control your character, no one else does. If they do, it's either because they have your permission or they are God-Moding.

Quote:
I ran across the room.

Bad. You didn't run across the room, you're sitting in your chair at your computer.

Quote:
Bob ran across the room

Good. Bob is your character. He ran across the room.

Description
Description is your friend. Always describe what your characters are doing. Not only does it take more writing talent, but it shows intelligence as well. Just don't go overboard.

Quote:
Jack ran.

This is basic and bland. Watch this.

Quote:
Jack's legs pumped up and down, propelling his body through the air at a decent speed, the wind pushing his clothing backwards.

This is better, still not incredible, but a lot better than a two-word sentence.

Length
I'm not going to give an example for this because you should know what the proper length for a role-play is from reading the rules. Just remember, the longer and more descriptive, the better. Also, description adds to length.

God-Moding
Okay, this one is prohibited in any way here at MHS. So what is God-Moding, you ask? Well, it's when you act like your character can do everything and hit everyone. Let's take a look.

Quote:
Luke swung his lightsaber and sliced off Vader's arm.

This is illegal. You do not say if you hit or not, that is up for the person you are attacking to decide. However, if you are attacked, you cannot dodge everything unless you are obviously quicker or more well trained. Even then, a well-planned attack will usually cause some damage.

Quote:
Luke raised his lightsaber and flicked his wrists, hoping to catch Darth Vader off guard. Afterwards, he dropped down and swung his leg out in an effort to trip the Dark Lord.

This is acceptable. With this, Luke is not connecting with anything, he is simply trying to hit.

Meta-Gaming
Meta-Gaming is also illegal. This is when your character knows something that hasn't happened or something he hasn't experienced or learned. You must keep in your character's mind.

Quote:

"What is that?" Exiro asked.

"Oh that? It's just a monster intent on taking over the world and eating our babies," replied Hanharr.

Bad Hanharr, you don't know all of that. Your owner might, though. Who was talking there?

Quote:

"What is that?" Exiro asked.

"I dunno! It looks like some man-eating monster," replied Hanharr.

Much better, Hanharr doesn't know what the baby-eating monster is trying to do.

Spelling
Correct spelling is great. It makes you look smarter and it makes your role-play look cleaner. If you need a spell-checker, use Microsoft Word. If you don't have Word and need a writing program that does, download Jarte at www.jarte.com. It's pretty much like a free version of Word. If you mis-spell excessively, we will ask you to enroll in the RP Help forum for a class in spelling.

Grammar
Grammar is also a good thing. It makes you look smarter and it makes your role-plays look cleaner. Word also has a grammar checker, but Jarte doesn't, so you'll have to naturally be good with grammar to succeed. If you don't use good grammar, disciplinary action will be taken. Type your posts like they were a school paper.

Quote:

hey guyz i am s0 ecsited to finly rolply wth u gyz!

Bad. You look like a very young kid who just left kindergarden.

Quote:

Hey guys, I am really excited to finally roleplay with you.

Good. You seem like a human being who has some level on intelligence. It also makes it so people can understand you, and you are taken more seriously when posting.

They both say the same thing, but it's pretty obvious which one is easier to read. This will ultimatly help you on these boards, and hopefully improve your grammar in life situations also. If we notice you need help in the grammar area, we will ask you to enroll in a grammar class in the RP help forum.
