Reunion at Grugni's House
A dusty band of travel worn hunters returns to Grugni's house from the east and dumps their packs as soon as they are in the door. Neither group can help but notice the clothing of the others.
Yimris, Atan, Meneloss, Ruglan and Sangraal are all in fresh garments. They are simple but well made, and obviously new despite the road dust.
Madragar, Kezib, Draxim and Ruig, on the other hand, look like they were attacked by a swarm of moths. Their clothing is not only full of dozens of tiny holes, but is stained with odd greens and browns. They don't smell particularly good either.
It seems that everyone has a lot of questions...

Re: Reunion at Grugni's House
Meneloss smiles when he sees Vala, her youthful cheer is infectious. Upon seeing the two bald men and the stout dwarf, he calls out "Hallo!" Quickening his pace, he hurries up to Grugni's house and the group in front. With a clap on the back for Madragar and a mock punch to Kezib, Meneloss greets his companions. To Draxim, he makes a scowl and sternly asks "You have my oil and rope?" Before Draxim can answer, Meneloss breaks into his crooked grin and winks. "It is good to sees you friends. I know peoples in Werthyn        who can helps you." He says as he models his new duds. "Yelms light! What happens to your clothes?!"

Re: Reunion at Grugni's House
"I might ask you the same thing," says Madragar, eyeing Meneloss' new finery. "It seems as though our clothes took paths as different as we ourselves. It is good to see you; I had not dared to hope that all would return alive."
"As for us, we engaged a beast of mad Chaos which quite nearly scoured us from Moagara. We were wildly fortunate to escape with only such damage as you see. But come, you must be tired, and have a long tale to tell."
"And when you are done, I have a puzzle you will wish to see. I am curious to know if you can unravel more of it than I have. It has bedeviled me all this day, and would have done so last night, were I not utterly spent in exhaustion."

Re: Reunion at Grugni's House
Standing a bit back, Atan smiles at the reunion, obviously glad to see all alive. When he looks at the remenants of Madragar's clothing he looks at Yimris' new garments, then back to Madragar and laughs. "Your clothes look terrible."

Re: Reunion at Grugni's House
To Madragar, Meneloss continues:
"I will let Atan or others tells to you the story. They are better speaking Moagari. Maybe my clothes speak better too." He fetches from his pack the bloodstained tunic which before was a decent elven garment. "Now you see why our clothes are new." He continues: "I hope this can be cleaned so then I give to you the clothes from my back."
"I am not too tired, show to me this puzzle. I may helps you. Did your bird return?"
[Meneloss will seek out Grugni and/or Vala to ask if either thinks the garment is salvageable.]

Re: Reunion at Grugni's House
Taking cue from Menelos Atan breaks into the previous days tale. "The Broo had about a four hour start on us and they were travelling very quickly. Much quicker then when Yimris and I tracked them before so we thought we may lose them. They went almost due south for most of the day until about 2 hours before sunset. That is when we found a small crude shrine. It was the bones of some recently killed animal hanging from a tree. None of us could make out its meaning so we continued our hunt. From there the broo had turned east and headed towards settled lands. Just before dusk we realized that the Elk-headed Broo had abandoned the warband. We quickly assessed that it had probably split from the group back at the shrine and we had failed to see it. After a quick discussion we all concured that the larger group of Broo were the most immediate danger to the area and so we continued to follow them. It was not long there after that we came upon the remaining members of the Broo warband. Without their leader they were no longer disciplined and so raided the first steading they came upon. Regretably, we did not arrive in time to save the farm's occupants. In a short but intense skirmish we killed 4 of the 5 animal men. The last fled and we were unable to pursue due to our wounds. With the last Broo gone we set about burrying the dead family and treating our wounds. Now for that last Broo, he unfortunately ran straight into a small group of Broo-hating Olmanii warriors. These same Olmanii warriors approached us and offered us food and lodging for the night at their village. We took them up on there offer for another cold night on the ground didn't appeal very much. The village of Werthyn was a wall enclosed village. We met Hegi the matriarch of the village and imparted our tale to her. In gratitude she gave us these fine new clothes, food and shelter for the night. She also offered us employment guarding their village but we can discuss that later. That is, by the way, the reason I think the Olmanii were there. Mercenaries. This morning we got up well rested, ate a good breakfeast and took a lesurely stroll back here." After that long winded tale, Atan takes a good swig off his water skin.

Re: Reunion at Grugni's House
"Upon our descent into that place," explains Madragar, "we discovered a temple to Chaos, complete with a pit in which the victims of the dread priests were sacrificed to a beast of chaos. We found also many runes, of which I will speak later."
"There is about the place some heavy spell of old which makes the operation of even simple sorcery a thing of peril, and which hangs so heavy upon the air that sound lies leaden there, a thing oppressed."
"We descended further to a chamber wherein we were accosted by a spirit of the ancient world which, once having animated the corpse of a previous delver, attacked us with terror and with deadly force. By luck and by the fortitude of Ruig, Kezib and Draxim, we managed to destroy the corpse, but I fear the animating evil still awaits below. For that reason, we have buried and consecreated all the bodies which we found."
"Then arose against us the greatest terror of that place, a formless beast of Chaos, a thing of great size that oozed along the floor and the mucus of which was as a terrible acid which ate away both flesh and steel."
"By the power of fire alone were we preserved, and our possessions, liberally dosed in the oil which Meneloss loaned to our companion, were all sacrificed to save our lives. The creature driven back, we fled to the surface and chopped enough wood and gathered enough pitch to create a great bonfire, which we toppled into the sacrificial pit which was the home of the senseless beast. It burned and died, and the world is well rid of it."
"The runes I mentioned have defied my attempts to decipher, and defied even the Art which I leant upon them, as though actively evading understanding while all the while dancing just beyond the capacity for insight. I am close...I feel it it is important."

Re: Reunion at Grugni's House
" Yelm be praised! Kezib it is good to see you again. I will defer from commenting on your current garments, as I can hear Atan and Meneloss have that part of our greetings well in hand."
Sangraal gives Kezib a haughty slap on the shoulder.
" By the light, Yelm guided us right to them! The foul beasts had fell upon a small farm and slaughtered the folk who resided within when we found them."
Indicating to Ruglan.
" You should have seen him, Blessed with the sound and the fury of Urox himself. The broos head launched a clear five feet straight up from its shoulders, if not ten."
Sangraal makes a poping noise at this, and mimes the motion of sqwinting into the sun, hand to forehead looking up at the sky.
"We sent those spawn back to the dark hole from which they came."

"By Yelms Glory!" Kezib blurts out.
Blushing, Kezib regains composure and smiles to Sangraal.
"The horrors that seperated us were not strong enough to keep us apart. It is good to see you my friend".
Kezib turns to Ruglan and smiles. "Ruglan the Broo hunter.
Thank Yelm that Sangraal had those like you around him to keep him safe." Kezib clasps Ruglan and smiles.

Return to the hearth
Enthusiasm abated, Sangraal turns to see how the rest of the members of the tower expedition fared.
" So the door runes confounded you Madragar as me as they did me? Lets go inside and speak of our adventures under the warmth of Gurgnis hospitality. Is that pumpkinbread I smell?"

"Nay, those runes yielded to the Charm of Sorcery readily enough," replies Madragar, following Sangraal inside.
"'Twas the runes below which have so far eluded my grasp."

[OCC: Please don't quote, Roleplay it.... geeeeezzzz Nolan, play the game ]
Sangraal nods in acknowledgment of his mistake, as he goes to greet Mistress Gugni.
"Where are these runes? Did you copy them down? I am sorry if the tale has already been told. Maybe a warm fire and some hot drink will allow a retelling of this puzzle?"

Look, Sparky, a lot of other people posted in between. In that instance, quoting is the only way to maintain clarity of narrative.

Re: Return to the hearth
"They are below the tower, beside the pit. I could not copy them because they literally slide away before the eyes, changing so as to evade purpose and meaning almost as if they were alive. Perhaps your elven eyes will perceive something my human ones have not. Or perhaps the morning will bring fresh perspective to the problem."

Re: Return to the hearth
Atan stands there, momentarily confused, as Madragar impressively quotes verbatim Sangraals words and then proceeds to answer. Figuring it to be a strange human habit, " I hope I don't have to repeat what Madragar just said, but can you show us the runes you speak of."

Re: Return to the hearth
Draxim has been uncharacteristically quiet up till now, and those approach him get the impression that he has been wearied by great labor and the cares of the world. [OOC: Sorry I've been away but as all 7 of Draxim's kinsman once said: Hi Ho, Hi Ho, It's...Oh never mind.]
Upon Meneloss's mock scolding, the young gullible dwarf falls for it hook, line, and sinker, and then appears mightily relieved when the jest is revealed. He produces the rope and the spikes and hands them back reverently to Meneloss.
"As Madragar has said the oil and these items saved our lives. Nor would we have got far without them. It is good strong rope, but I fear we need to check it thouroughly for the acid of that foul puddle of grease may have damaged it somewhat." The rope looks relatively clean and sharply coiled by an expert hand.
" I haven't had time yet to inspect it thouroughly. " Meneloss gets the feeling that Draxim has gone over it with a fine tooth comb. [which he has].
Draxim listens intently to Atan's description, and also perks up a bit at Sangraal's enthusiasm but he is plainly muscle sore and maybe a bit shell shocked form the previous day.
"It was revolting!" he confides to Meneloss. "Nauseating! liquified corpses in barrels! and the stench from that disgusting heap of jellied offal, Paww!" He lowers his voice even more although anyone nearby can still hear him, "I tell you I retched twice. That hasn't happened since my initiati...well anyway it's been a long time," he breaks off and goes back to munching bread and drinking. Water.
