Revised Chapter of Wolvite! *gasp*
Well…we haven’t seen one of these in awhile, have we? ;-) Yep, finally got off my lazy butt and wrote another chapter of Wolvite! You may all have your jaws drop now.
Wolvite Ch. 5: The Young One
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Earning Dusty’s trust enough that she tells me her name has an effect on my emotions. I suddenly feel like my throat is constricting and I can sense a stinging feeling behind my eyes. I close them for a few moments, but when I open them again I can see only two things…Suicune’s confused look and Raikou’s angry one. Narrowing my eyes at my brother, I growl out. “What’s your problem?”
He just glares at me for a long time, then exhales his breath slowly, making me realize it had been held the whole time. Shaking his head, his eyes slit into narrow strips. “You know our mission, we can afford no set backs or…” Losing his nerve, he just shakes his head again and then sighs long and low. “Are you sure you want this young one to be involved with us?”
It is now my turn to sigh and shake my head. “It is no longer fair to ask me what is best for her. Ask Dusty yourself. Although in my opinion, it would be worse to leave her here than to take her with us.” I look down at Dusty, whose eyes are sparkling with confusion, but who is relatively calm for the situation she’s in. “What do you think, little Dusty?”
The tiny Skarmory just sits there, thinking. Her head turns slowly, looking first at me, then at Suicune, who has been silent throughout the whole ordeal, then to Raikou, who is sulking a few feet away. “Well…” She begins. “I’d like to know what you…er, ‘mission’ is that seems to be taking an emotional strain on you all.”
I stare at her, confused. “What emotional strains have you detected, young one?”
She raises her head to stare into my eyes, then smiles a bit. “You have tears in your eyes, Wolvite, and the blue beast over there also seems to be troubled in her mind. May I ask who she is? She’s not Suicune, is she?”
Suicune, at hearing her name, gasps, then slowly comes forward, whispering almost with each step. “Dusty…why are you here? Are you truly a Skarmory, or something else disguised as one?”
Dusty laughed a bit at that. “I’m a Skarmory, Suicune. I’m here because my mother and I got attacked by Pidgeot. She flew away, leaving me hidden here. That was several days ago. I’ve only left this shelter to gather berries to eat and find water to drink. I’ve been worried and scared this whole time, especially when Wolvite came and found me. No offense, Wolvite.” She added quietly. “Why would you think I’m another?”
I answer that for my sister. “Your wisdom…and understanding of the concepts of everything you’ve been dealt so far in life are extrodinary for one so young.”
Suddenly, Raikou moves and runs over to us. “Come now. Take the young one with you, then. We must be going. We’ve wasted too much time already.”
I snort as an answer to that. “Go? We haven’t answered her question about what is going on or why we are here. Don’t you think she should know these things before we drag her away?”
Dusty shakes her head quickly. “Please, no. Take me with you, for I fear that in a few days time the Pidgeot will find me here and I will be no more. I really don’t care where we go or what happens as long as I’m not alone any longer. Please…take me with you…”
I sigh and then pick her up with my paw again. “Alright, young one, you will come with me. You may nestle in my tails, that way the wind will not carry you away as we run. We are heading to the sea, to find Articuno, Zapdos and Lugia. They are needed to save the world from Ho-oh…”
In the middle of my explination, Riakou cuts me off. “Tell her on your way to the sea. Suicune, you and I will travel around the mountians, judge your distance and timing, for we will pick the quickest way to come back. You go left, I’ll go to the right. Wolvite, you will go through the mountians. Not only are you the sturdiest of us, but you can also keep warm in the cooler climates. Go now. Good luck.”
I stand there and watch as first my brother blazes off, quick as the lightning he represents. Once he is out of sight, I turn to my sister, who is still standing beside me. She bows to me, and I to her, before she turns and runs as quick as she can towards her destination. I watch her, too, until her teal body is no longer in my sight, then turn to Dusty. “Are you ready, Dusty?”
The tiny bird hops from my paw onto my icicle-covered back, jumping from icicle to icicle until she is near my tails. Sliding underneath thw two curled ones, she nestled in a curves of them, safe from the wind and snow. “Yes.”
I nod my head and then started to trot away from the rock ledge from whence I found my new friend. With each step away from the place, a feeling inside me grew stronger and stronger, building, building. Confused and beginning to become a bit scared, I focus on my task at hand, and not this new emotion of which I don’t understand.
Looking around, I find myself in a forest, dark, deep, forboding, yet comforting all the same. It is old, you can tell by the scent of the trees in the air, musty, damp, but somehow clean. Snow is spattered on the ground, and every once in awhile you can see dead, crumpled leaves through thin sheets of ice on the ground. Pine needles also litter the ground, and once, I see a flower growing in an enclosed space of sunlight, a beautiful plant the color of ice and the shape of a rose. My breath exhales as ice crystals, which dance in the air, turning it white, grey and even silver at times.
Silently, silently, I run through this forest, unwilling to disturb the peace and solitude it allows. Dusty says nought, either. We are like two shadows floating through the trees on the wind. There seems to be little life in this forest, as we see no other living creatues, although at one point I do find Houndoom tracks in the snow. Scenting the air, I can tell that the pack had been here the day before, tracking down another creature.
Just as we start to really enjoy the solitude and peace of the forest, it ends. The trees start to thin, the snow grows deeper and deeper. Ice covers the ground in sheets, the ice in the air is no longer just from me, but from the blasting wind that now surrounds us. Soon, there are no trees, nothing but barren land and rock outcroppings as far as the eye can see. The air starts to get thinner and thinner. I need to slow down, my head begins to spin. Stopping in my pace, I drop down to a walk. Dusty is asleep in my tails.
Walking, walking, I finally can see more than the ground curving up and up. The sky gets closer and closer, the rocks become less and less, the snow deeper and deeper. I squint, trying to spy what is on the newly-found horizon. Looking closely, I can see something…But what, I cannot tell. Narrowing my eyes, and ruffling my brow, I try to tell what is set out so far away. Suddenly, a movement from inside my tails tells me that Dusty is awake.
Slowly, cautiously, the young skarmory gathers herself up and walks across my icicles again. Yawning, she stands on my head, balanced between my ears. Blinking, she opens her eyes wide and then shudders. “The sea…I remember when we lived there…When…” She stops there, unwilling to go on.
I, on the other hand, am releived. “The sea…we found it.”
But then, I have only taken one step when something in my periferal vision distracts me. Turning my head to get a better look at it, I can feel my heart beat faster and my mind begins to spin. It can’t be…No… I can’t help but stare at my discovery, while Dusty has her eyes shut tight. I don’t think she has seen the carcass yet, but she will soon.
Looking at it closely, I can tell that this Skarmory was out-matched and beaten mercilessly by many. Scratches and claw marks cover her frozen, still body just like her feathers, numbering just as many. Her beak is broken, black blood covers the snow around it. The eye that I can see is half-open, clouded over, staring into some twilight zone only those who have left this world can see. One wing is folded up near her body, while the other is almost ripped entirely from her, only hanging on by a few grey fibers, frozen together with ice and dried blood. The limp tail is in tatters, and must have streamed blood at one time, as the snow is a scarlet color, not white. Staring at this destroyed skarmory, I look one more time into the eye…and through the death-cloud, you can see a chocolate color, with deadened gold flecks mixed it. That’s when it hits me.
“Oh…no…”
Well well well...that seems like a good place to stop now, doesn't it? Hope you enjoyed it.
You mean you can put something worthwhile down here? Interesting...
Re: Revised Chapter of Wolvite! *gasp*
*blink* nifty as always. I've never seen the older chapters, so I can only guess that you've improved them greatly. The description is pretty good. Nice chappy, I wanna see more.
