Rob the Koala
Rob the Koala

Rob is a four-year-old male koala from Thornlands (near Brisbane). He was brought to the Australian Wildlife Hospital on 25 July by a koala rescuer. This koala rescuer had been called by a concerned member of the public who had seen him get hit by a car. Not just hit by a car, but hit and dragged by the muffler for several metres along a busy arterial road.

Unfortunately for this 8kg koala, his injuries were very severe. He had extensive injuries and burns to his head, left ear, arms and legs. The Hospital's Senior Veterinarian, Dr Jon Hanger, immediately assessed his situation and began surgery. As a result, Rob's left ear was amputated and part of his ear canal was reconstructed. He was then put on a course of antibiotics and pain relief.

He recovered well from the shock of his accident and surgery, with the help of intensive care and some IV fluids. He is now in the process of recuperating (which may take quite some time) and learning to balance and walk again. He has started to go into an outside enclosure for a short time during the day for some fresh air.

From this photo you will see he does look a little unusual, but this should improve when his hair grows back!

Update on Rob the koala

Rob, our four-year-old male koala who was hit and dragged several metres by a car in Thornlands (near Brisbane), is doing really well after extensive surgery which involved his left ear being amputated, part of his ear canal reconstructed and treatment of severe burns to his head, arms and legs.

His burns are healing extremely well, he has regained his balance and spends days and nights outside now, which as you can imagine is much more to Rob's liking. As he is feeling better, he is now showing much more attitude.

Rob represents what can be achieved after surviving such horrific injuries, and we are confident that he will return to the wild. Rob's surgery and rehabilitation costs will amount to around $10,000 by the end of his recovery, but being able to return him to the wild where he belongs is worth far more.

Rob has touched the heart of so many people in particular renowned Australian singing sensations The Veronicas, who will be coming to Australia Zoo on the 28 th of July 2006 for what will be known as ‘Help Robbie Day'. The Veronicas, Jess and Lisa Origliasso, will be autographing Help Robbie postcards, which will be available for purchase on the say for $5. By contributing to the Help Robbie Day, you can help Rob and others like him.
