SG 7 Review and photos
What follows are my thoughts from SG7 and some thoughts from Heroes which does contain spoilers if you have not seen the episodes as yet.

"So another Wolf SG Con is behind us, their seventh, my sixth. I don't think it was their best one but it was not their worst either.
The Venue
Back at the Heathrow Thistle, it had been two years since my last visit there but I didn't have a problem checking in (even though the queue looked horrendous it only took 10 minutes to get through it). The Hall and surrounding event area was handled well and the 'swiping in and out' system worked better than at SG6. Beer was expensive but hey, it was a hotel and a London hotel at that. As a venue, it's not one I've had a problem with so far.
The Guests
This was an interesting mix with mostly supporting cast members (not one of the regular cast this time round). I can say that the guests were on the whole entertaining and perhaps more importantly for a convention full of energy and great personalities. Even when the questions dried up there were far fewer 'pregnant' pauses than had been experianced at other events, they came out with back stories, history, and other material (that might almost have been pre-prepared...). Teryl Rothery was her usual entertaining self (deftly avoiding questions on Heroes), Ronny Cox was also fantastic (even though I did'nt ask my question, I know, I'm pathetic). David Palffy and Alex Zahara were ebullient and manic (get these guys with Douglas Arthurs and who knows what might happen), Steve Bacic brought a lot of information on both acting and Andromeda and Jill Teed also had some great little stories and kept the crowd well entertained. All in all, a lot better than what might have been expected on paper.
'Virtual Queueing'
One twist we hadn't expected was a new way to queue for the main hall. It sounded simple enough, get a numbered ticket and you get to go in the main hall when your number is called (a lot like boarding your airplane). The only problem was that this was a new idea and neither myself or my team had any idea it was going on, there were some signs but small text on an non-descript A4 sheet is not the easiest thing to read at a distance. I suppose it worked well enough and is almost a next step forward after the swiping system but we were told it wasn't going to be used on the doors for Saturday night and then it was. I guess like most things it will need some tweaking.
The Traders
If you weren't into pictures or trading cards then the traders present were vaguely depressing. Not even so much as a single patch for sale. Oh well.
The Nights
Friday night of SG7 was the 'meet & greet' which was a similar thing to SG6 but this time round there were to be no pictures (I'm guessing in an attempt to speed the process up). When we came to get into the main hall it was just a huge seething mass of people and myself and the team elected to stay out and enjoy a quiet social (even then Alex Zahara came out and said Hi which sent him up in estimations quite considerably). I think the Friday night party started at around 23:50 which was virtually the same back at SG6, but by then a lot of people had left and the heart wasn't quite there. Saturday night was quite a drastic change from previous as after the fancy dress we then had 90 minutes of Folk Music from Ronny Cox and his band, whilst it wasn't quite my style of music (I'll wait for the techno remix) it made for a nice change but it did mean that the Saturday night party didn't start again until late. Sunday night was top, great music, all the usual dances and once again all thanks to Marwon and co for a great night.
The Future
It was another great convention, better in some areas, not as good in others. Virtual queueing is an interesting idea that I imagine Wolf will continue to tweak and refine, perhaps a staggered set of release notes at say 4 and 2 months before the event to keep the attendees more in the picture or some kind of better sign system at the event itself rather some white A4 blue tacked to a wall.
Before the event neither myself or any of the team had booked for SG8 but with more of the cast list being revealed and the possibility of Shanks, Judge and Rothery in the same place at the same time? By the Sunday we had all booked.
Of course, the whole event might have had a much different feel had it been run just 7 days later...
Heroes: The best Stargate two-parter ever?
Like Meridian before it, this episode has been the root of controversy over some of the supposed contents. Stargate has had a nasty habit of giving some superb set-ups in part 1 of a story and then blowing it completely with the pay-off of part 2 (with Exodus / Enemies being their worst transgression and Summit / Last Stand being their best (IMO)). Heroes Part 1 is a great character driven piece with a great supporting cast (Adam Baldwin in particular, get that man on Stargate: Atlantis
NOW!!) It doesn't really go anywhere or tell us anything until part 2 when certain ramifications become clear. Back at SG6 Don S. Davis dropped some hints with his "people die and people retire" statement and Teryl Rothery deftly avoided a direct question (the very last question asked during her Sunday presentation bizarrely enough) on the subject of Frasier dying. SG4 had a very different feel to it as it came only four days after Meridian and the emotional high I think everybody was one Saturday night was awesome (although I was with Tom McBeath and the sick bucket comment.) Once again, the questions over Heroes came, but this time more directly, and were once again well handled by Rothery.
As it stands I think Heroes 1 & 2 is possibly the best Stargate two parter (I'm just off to watch it again), it's well acted, well written and the direction is awesome, it has a great supporting cast (including Robert Picardo, Saul Rubinek and the already mentioned excellent Adam Baldwin). After a great start to series 7, we've had a dire few weeks since then with Space Race and journey to the centre of the earth and Grace (which could have been excellent but I think they blew the end) but things are looking up and everyone at SG7 was excited about Lost City, I hope I am as well."
