Re: Scouting Tips...
Well I have spent a lot of time in the field and I know where every trail, rub, scrape, and bedding area there is on our 200 acre plot. I have accuired this knowlege by taking long walks and leaving the ATV at home. I always look for these key elements when seting up a stand.
1. areas with a lot of tracks.
2. edges of fields.
3. !fresh! rubs
4. !fresh! scrapes
5. trails
6. natural funnels
7. spots where the pravailing wind is in your face if you want to set up a stand.
8. water/creek/pond/lake/river/stream bottoms
9. areas with alot of droppings
10. feeding areas
1. Start in winter with you scouting and keep it up untill the season begins. Look for heavily used trails, and bedding areas. try to get a toppo map and link the beds to the trails if you can.
2. spring, continue looking for tracks, trails, beds, and droppings. And update your toppo map.
3. Summer. Glass over potential food sources from a distance later in the day, say half an hour before the sun goes down, and try to find more places where deer feed. (this is where a deer cam comes in handy) update your map and label where all the food sources are. (dont forget water sources!)
4. Late summer/ early fall. Find rubs, scrapes, new food sources and check all the other places on your map to make sure that they still contain deer. glass for bucks during the evening. Sit along trails and see if any buck comes down it and go back to rubs, scrapes, and beds to make sure they are fresh. set up your stand . Update map.
5. FAll. HUNT
6. winter. start over!
