Something I wrote
I was reading this story and it gave me an idea to write this. I wrote it a while ago, before I came here, and I only just found it again, so I thought I'd share! BTW, there is a little swearing in there.

18 steps
By Sam

Sora’s P.O.V

My name is Sora Taylor. I’m 16 years old. I have long black hair and green eyes. I live in Emerald City and attend Emerald High. Yeah, it’s a beautiful school, but when you’re a social reject with no friends like me, it’s hell.

People like me don’t have time for social lives anyway, so I guess it’s ok. Because I’m the oldest at the orphanage… Oh yeah, I’m an orphan. So anyway, because I’m the oldest at the orphanage, I spend most of my time helping Katherine out. She’s the owner of the orphanage, and she’s pretty much our mother. About 90 percent of the kids here call her mum anyway, but she’s just flattered by it.

Today was like every other day. I got up and went back to sleep. Then Katherine tried to wake me up but I just told her that I don’t want to go to school because I’m ‘sick.’ But that lame excuse didn’t work so I got dressed and went to school. My first class was Geography. It’s not bad; I like what we learn about in that class. What sucks is the amount of crap I get in that class from everyone else.

There are these two guys in my class, and they’re always the ones who try there hardest to piss me off. The worst thing is the spitballs. Seriously, they made a game out of it. One point if they get me on the back, ten if they get my arms and twenty if they get my head. Today Alan got me in the head five times in a row, so I threw my Geography textbook at him! I don’t try to get noticed at school so I don’t usually do stuff like that, but I felt I had to.

After enduring my Geography class it was lunchtime. I generally try to avoid eating in, entering or going near the cafeteria. This school has a lunchtime seating system. There’s never a place for me. I’m lower than the nerds on the ‘school food chain.’ Lower than the nerds, and that sucks. So I went to the schools gardens with my home made lunch consisting of a sandwich and juice and parked it on a small patch of grass.

When I sat there I slowly thought to my ‘brothers and sisters’, the others from the orphanage. I envied them. They had each other at Emerald Primary and they weren’t alone. They’d even have each other when they hit Emerald High. But me, being the oldest orphan to not be adopted, had to enter this school by myself. Emerald High is for rich snobby kids. Everyone is one. So why am I here? I don’t know.

After lunch and my second class, I found myself being late for English. My English teacher is so strict, so the word ‘detention’ was already ringing in my ears. I bolted down the long hallway of the third floor and jumped down the flight of stairs, then headed down the next. However, when I went around the next corner I bumped into someone and went flying. I landed on the ground, holy crap it hurt.

But it was worse when I found out who I bumped into.
Laura.

God I hate her. Anyway, I picked myself up and dusted my uniform off.
“ Watch where your going, Taylor.” She said.
Y’know I really hate it when people call me by my last name. But everybody does it here.
“ Sorry.” I replied quietly, not wanting any trouble from her at all.
Then she came forward and pushed me, causing me to lose my balance and fall over. I’m clumsy as hell to, by the way. She stood over me, trying to look like she beat me. Laura and her followers just laughed at me. I rolled my eyes but Laura must have seen me do it.
“ Taylor, you are such a reject. Maybe you should try getting some friends.” She said.
Ok, right about now was when I wanted to get up and punch her face in, or at least retaliate with an insult about her. God knows I had plenty. But no, it wasn’t worth it. So I just sat quietly on the floor.
“ Go back to your factory Taylor, you’re one defective product.” Laura added.
Ouch. That one stung. I was at the end of my rope, and Laura had been the one to cut it. Just as I was about to scream my head off at her, someone came to my rescue. They walked up angrily and just, slapped her. I figured the guy had slapped her for some other reason, until.
“ Laura, get a life! Leave Taylor alone, she’s done nothing to you! ” he yelled.
Taylor? Was that me? Well, Laura looked at the guy who came to my aid.
“ You’ll regret this.” She replied coldly.
Then she was gone. The guy held his hand out to me.
“ Are you ok? ” He asked.
Oh, he had the voice of an angel! I took his hand without looking at him and he helped me up.
“ Thanks, I was about to- YOU! ” I yelled.
I looked to my rescuer. It was Alan, the guy from Geography who played the ‘let’s target Sora with spit balls’ game. Well I quickly pulled my hand away and picked up my books. But he bent down and… helped me? It was too weird.
He offered my book to me, and I took it quickly.
“ Well, are you ok? ” He asked me again.
“ Why do you care? ” I asked, walking away.
But Alan seemed to follow me.
“ Because I just do.” He replied.
I stopped and turned to him.
“ Alan, from my Geography class? Being nice to me? I don’t think so.” I replied.
And I kept walking again, but this time, Alan grabbed my hand and stopped me.
“ Yeah, that’s me.” He replied.
I pulled my arm away. What was he playing at, being so nice to me?
“ Why are you being nice to me now? ” I asked.
“ Because… I don’t know.” He replied.
I turned away.
“ Well thanks then. But I don’t appreciate the spitballs you and your friend so generously give me every lesson. Goodbye.” I said.
And like that, I left him there.

Nothing else really happened at school after that, so I’ll skip straight to after school. Well… I quickly left. There was no point in me waiting around since there’s no one to wait for. I ran straight to the orphanage, which is a pretty long way from the school. I hit the door, sweating like hell, but I didn’t care. Today, for me, was an important day. Today Katherine has finally decided to tell me what happened to me, where she found me, and if she knows, what happened to my parents.

Well, she just told me that she was going to explain my life, and I guessed that that’s what she meant. I quickly busted into her room and told her to tell me. She could tell that I’d ran all the way here just by looking at me. Katherine just told me that she’d tell me tonight. So I was freaking excited. I know, it doesn’t sound like something to get excited over, but I was.

And just like that, nighttime hit! Ok, not really. It took AGES! I was so bored; I can’t even begin to tell you! But I just finished putting the rest of the kids to bed. Now the time’s here. I’ll finally know. Here I go, I’m going into the living room. Katherine’s waiting. Wait… What’s wrong with me? Why am I shaking? Come on Sora, you can do this, open the door.

What? Where is she? She better not have forgotten! Oh well, I’ll just sit and wait for her.

Third person P.O.V

Sora sat in the living room to the orphanage, practically bursting with excitement. Katherine walked in from behind her carrying a small box in her hand. Sora’s eyes followed that box and she just stared at it. Katherine sat down opposite Sora and placed the box on the table beside her.
“ Mum, what’s that? ” Sora asked.
Katherine looked at her with concern in her eyes. She’d been dreading this day but she knew Sora had to find out. She looked next to her, motioning Sora to sit next to her. Sora stood up and sat beside Katherine.
“ Sora-” she began.
“ Are my parents alive? ” Sora butted in quickly.
“ I don’t know.” Katherine replied.
She didn’t know where to begin. Katherine turned to Sora and took her hands reassuringly.
“ Sora, you’re parents could be alive. I don't know, I have no idea. You were abandoned here.” Katherine confessed.
Sora looked at her with a confused look on her face. Katherine went on.
“ I-I remembers the night I found you. It was raining that day. I walked out to the front bin to put the rubbish in it and I-I saw… you.” She added.
Sora’s eyes widened.
“ There wasn’t a note, there was nothing. You were just there.” Katherine said.
Sora pulled her hands away and looked forward.
“ So, I was near the bin? ” Sora asked.
Katherine was hesitant, but she nodded.
“ I guess… t-that’s how t-they… felt.” Sora explained, her voice shakey as she tried to fight back her tears.
Katherine places her hand on Sora’s back. She handed her the box.
“ That was found around your neck, Sora.” She added.
Sora reluctantly opened the box. Inside was a necklace with wire hanging off it that was twisted into the name ‘Sora.’ She stared at it for a moment, and then closed the lid.
“ Sora? ” Katherine asked.
Sora threw the box to the side. It hit the wall and bounced back. Sora stood up.
“ How worthless was I to them? ” She asked, hatred seeping into her voice.
Katherine stared at her.
“ Y’know what? The bin is so close to the doorstep. It’s…” Sora began, but she couldn’t finish.
Katherine’s concerned eyes shifted from the necklace box on the floor back to Sora.
“ 18 steps. 18 fucking steps Katherine! It’s 18 steps away from the doorstep. Am I so worthless that they couldn’t even spare 18 fucking steps! ? ” She shouted.
Sora hit the ground, crying. She punched the ground hard, but it her hand received more damage than the floor.
Katherine looked around. She could here the lights of the orphanage turning on and the children whispering.
“ Sora, they’re waking up! ” Katherine panicked.
She didn’t the kids to see Sora this way. They looked up to her because of how strong she was. Sora stood up and walked silently to her room. A few kids came into the living room.
“ What’s happening mum? ” they asked innocently.
Katherine just smiled. She picked up the box with Sora’s necklace in it.
“ Nothing, go back to bed.” She said.
Katherine guided the children to bed and waited with them until they fell asleep. When they went back to sleep, she walked into Sora’s room. She was asleep on her bed, tears in her eyes. Katherine placed the small box on her table. When she turned to leave, she stopped, and her eyes locked onto a fresh hole in the wall. She then looked to Sora and sighed. Katherine then left the room.
The next morning, Katherine didn’t bother to wake Sora for school, in case she didn’t want to go because of what happened last night. However, Sora did get up, but she would be late for school. She walked down the stairs.
“ Mum, why didn’t you wake me, I’ll be late! ” She said.
Katherine was about to speak, but Sora ran out the door. A smile appeared on her face.
“ So, she put it on.” Katherine commented.

Sora’s P.O.V

Now I’m going to be late for school. Just another thing for those jerks to tease me about. Seriously, who pays someone out about coming to school late?
Still, maybe Alan will be nice to me again. Y’know I kind of like him. Today, I’ll be sure to really thank him for what he did to Laura yesterday.

Oh, so you noticed it did you? Well yes, I’m wearing the necklace that my no good parents left me. Why? Because it’s the only thing that’s been mine from the beginning. It’s got good memories and bad memories.
Good memories? It reminds me of Katherine, my ‘mother.’ In my eyes, it’s a gift from her, and it will always help me to remember her, my family from the orphanage and all the good times we’ve spent together.
And the bad memories?

Well…

It reminds me of 18 steps that would have meant all the difference.
