Strachan Leaves Early & Football Round-up
Strachan Leaves Early
Southampton boss Gordon Strachan has quit the Premiership club with immediate effect. The club have released a statement confirming that Strachan has left three months ahead of his planned departure. But speculation that Glenn Hoddle will return to the club is premature - with reserve team boss Steve Wigley handed the reins until the end of the season. Chairman Rupert Lowe will then choose a successor - with Hoddle and Plymouth boss Paul Sturrock in the frame. Strachan was due to step down at the end of the season on health grounds - but he believes leaving now was the best course of action to take.

Curbs Agrees Extension Deal
Charlton manager Alan Curbishley has agreed a three-and-a-half-year extension to his contract. Curbishley, tipped as a future England manager, has constantly been linked with other Premiership clubs. He also hinted earlier this season that he might be interested in the vacant Tottenham job. But the Addicks announced to the Stock Exchange on Friday that the 46-year-old had committed to The Valley until 2007.

AFRICAN CUP OF NATIONS 2004
Nigeria 3rd Best

Nigeria secured third place in the Cup of Nations for the second time in successive tournaments. Jay-Jay Okocha opened the scoring with a deflected free-kick early in the first half. The Bolton midfielder then created the second with a well-placed cross which Osaze Odemwingie headed home. Mali dragged one back through Janvier Abouta whose left-footed volley flashed past Vincent Enyeama for one of the goals of the tournament. Nigeria 2 - Mali 1.

United Shares Continue To Rise
Manchester United shares have risen sharply amid speculation that US sports tycoon Malcolm Glazer is about to mount a takeover bid for the club. The shares jumped 5% on Friday, giving the club a stock market value of £741m. The Financial Times earlier reported that Mr Glazer had instructed Commerzbank to explore a takeover bid. The move comes a day after Mr Glazer raised his stake in the club to 16.31%, and after Irish tycoons John Magnier and JP McManus lifted theirs to 28.89%.
