Talisman for Mestitia
Mestitia is considering attuning a talisman and I thought I'd double check with the troupe re: the effects of attuning material and form bonuses.

She's thinking of taking an Iron Wand: which would have the following bonuses associated with it.

Iron: Harm or repel faeries +7
Wand: Repel things +2; Project bolt or missile +3; Control things at a distance +4; Destroy things at a distance +4

The rulebook says that the highest bonus acts as a bonus to casting totals where appropriate; obviously the bonus from Iron is something she'd be keen on.

I assume that a 'Circular ward against faeries' would count as repelling, and she'd get +7 to her casting total. For harming faeries what would she gain the +7 bonus to her casting total for any spell that caused harm to a faerie? e.g. would it help with penetration totals for 'Pilum of Fire' and 'Piercing Shaft of Wood', etc?

Also: The rulebook suggests that you can invest vis into the item 'bit by bit' - and appears to suggest that you can invest the device with vis up to your highest technique and form. Each time you prepare the talisman for enchantment or invest a power you can attune one of the bonuses.

So ... Mestitia, with a CrCo total of 26, could eventually invest the talisman with 26 pawns of vim (up to 10 points at a time I presume, with a magic theory 5). Though theoretically I could simply open the enchantment with 1 pawn of vim vis and obtain the +7 bonus in a single season. Does this accord with your interpretations of the rules?

Yes, the bonus would apply in both cases, IMO.

There was a long thread on the Atlas board a while ago where the bit by bit approach was confirmed. I agree that she could spend a single pawn to get the +7 bonus - this isn't so different from the AM3 rules, where a talisman can have zero invested powers but lots of bonuses.

Note that one can include one material in a talisman per point of MT, so Mestitia could develop something rather more exotic than an iron wand if she wishes.

Though a single material should make the item quite robust. The difficulty with working lots of different materials into the design is that if one part gets separated or broken, then the whole thing could be ruined (as I understand from the rules). But, I'm quite tempted to take something like amber or bloodstone to help my healing spells.

On a separate matter relating to the talisman; Mestitia has asked Lucca to make the mundane form of the talisman. "I imagined the wand to appear as three gnarled and twisted branches; bound together at their 'root' (where the wand could be held) and intertwined together to form the body of the wand."

Simon's suggested that whilst crafting the mundane item, Lucca could add some Verditius runes to aid in enchantments and reduce the maximum vis required to enchant the item.

Is that reasonable, do people think? It says that the talisman must be invested and enchanted by the person who wields the talisman. I'd have thought mundane construction would be fine - would Verditius runes be allowable or not?

I would vote against this. The rules are quite clear that the talisman must be enchanted from the beginning by the Magus in question. The description of Verditius runes strongly implies that the runes are inscribed when the Verditius creates the item, i.e. they are fundamentally tied to the aspect of creation. I don't think they are simply carvings that can be added to an item created by another.

Agreed. I spoke to Mike and Pad, and this was also their view.

PS: how bizarre ... why has ezboard filtered 's.c.r.i.p.t.'?
