The Cairnhollow, Part III
Ulwe had just laid his head down on his bedroll (despite it being only a few hours since he last awoke) when a single metallic ping broke the subterranean silence. Conversation ceased as eyes flicked from one face to another, looking for any recognition as to the source of the sound. Atan, Ulwe and Draxim rushed down the eastern corridor to the row of arrowslits that overlooked the main hall.
Ping! The sound comes again. The three reach the redoubt and shove each other this way and that trying to get a glimpse of what could be making such a racket.
"What the..." Atan whispers.
At the far side of the main chamber, just outside the double doors that lead to the hall containing the odd vine they burned stands a dwarf. Armored by a chainmail hauberk with leather bracers, he is a particularly large example of that race. Barrel-chested and strong, his blonde hair falls from beneath a simple steel helm, his beard wild and long. He is clearly not Duergar, but doesn't have the same pronounced nose and dusky features of Draxim. This dwarf is fair skinned.
The sound appears to have come from the dwarf's axe which he strikes against the iron-reinforced frame of the door a third time. Clang! The sound echoes down the hall. He is looking straight at the row of arrowslits, and seems to be expecting some kind of response.
It's at that time that both Ulwe and Atan notice an obvious blood trail (made by Draxim, Ruglan and the piles of blood soaked Duergar gear) leading from beyond the double doors, through the main hall, and right up to the broken doors at the entrance to their outpost.
