The Dead Zone
I don't watch a LOT of TV, and I've let my viewing of THE DEAD ZONE slip this second season, but I for one thought they did a hell of a job on the first season.
A few episodes in, I kinda figured it would happen that the week to week episodes would turn into what on the X-Files was called the "monster of the week" episodes, the stand-alone stories where Johnny has to use his power to solve whatever that week's show revolves around, but there would also be the underlying thread carrying the main story further along.
At first I was a little disappointed in the changes they made, like having Sara marry Bannerman, making Johnny and Sara childhood friends, killing Johnny's mother before he comes out of the coma, but I've been re-reading the novel this past week and, in comparison now, I see the changes they made work for the best in terms of the series. I can't even complain about having Johnny's father long-dead in the series versus alive and well and re-married in the novel, because replacing Herb Smith with Reverend Purdy adds a new level to the series that wouldn't have been there had Herb Smith been around.
I wish I could remember Sunday nights to watch it because it was a FINE replacement for the lost X-Files last year (actually, I was glad XF was gone and was looking forward to having my Sunday's free, but then DZ came along and sucked me in). I caught a repeat on sci-fi the other night and it made me realize I'm going to miss a lot of the main story if I don't sit down and just watch the damn thing some Sunday.
While THE DEAD ZONE may not be the BEST genre show on TV, it's one of the only ones I watch--or have watched--in the last year or so.
And that's my addition to this topic.
