The Hall of the Ghurugil
[Note the new map in The World forum.]

Afternoon passes into evening and many of the Ghurugil wake from their well deserved naps, fill their mugs and prepare for dinner. The aging dwarves cannot conceal the aches and pains that wrack their bodies, and many groan and mumble to themselves, or just try to remain very still. Three days treking through the catacombs of Ravensgate has clearly taken its toll, but the dwarves seem merry in spite of it.

On a clean piece of parchment, Atan scribbles out a general map of the Nral river valley, pointing out the general locations of several mining and lumber settlements he is aware of.

Thaedrun is the largest of the settlements and the only one substantial enough to be considered a village. When the Nral river was alive with the steady flow of iron ore, copper and lumber towards the sea, Thaedrun acted as a center of trade. Miners would sell their goods in the village, and merchants seeking a deal would make the rough journey along the river to deal directly with the hard-working folk of the Nral. The river itself is very rocky and is strewn with deadly rapids all the way downstream until a few miles south of Dobrug. Traffic between Thaedrun and the sea is thus generally by land.

Thaedrun was abandoned more than thirty years ago as the legions began their withdrawal from Moagara with the Nral river valley. Rampaging broo warbands swept into the valley and quickly destroyed the southern settlements. Thaedrun held out for a time but was eventually evacuated. Atan has seen the place and knows that the thick stone walls built by Imperial engineers still stand though what lurks within those walls is a mystery.

The other major settlements along the river are Shael, Hryl and Yuthweid, though even in their prime were little more than fortified camps. To Atan's knowledge no one has been to those settlements in decades, though Atan once ventured into the vicinity of Shael. He remembers the terrain as being very rocky and overgrown.

Re: The Hall of the Ghurugil
Draxim continues helping Madfiln with food, and fetches beverages for the aching dwarves when he can. He is also liberal with simple words of encouragement and camraderie. Any time one of the Ghurugil offers another snippet of a tale from their foray under Ravensgate, he stops and listens with rapt attention.

At some point he will try to catch Madfiln when he is alone and ask him some questions [see]

Hugh and the Triplets say "Hi"
Ulwe having silently studied the scrolls and listening to the others, finally breaks a long silence.

"Sangraal, Irian gave these scrolls to you. He has left them as your charge with his last dying breaths. Atan, this same priest found you at your worst moment and gave succor. I never met the man and have only met Kaleb his companion of many moons this day. Yet somehow I know with my faith unshakeable that my new course is alongside that of these parchements and thier mysterious inscriptions.

Dawn-Brother since it is to you whom Irian gave the scrolls then it is you who shall bear them. Since you will travel with the Last of the Merek Lek to the Nrall and do battle with the Charkra, so shall I.
Your fate is bound with the scrolls. I shall learn where the course of my fate shall carry me in all of this. For now it is with you and the parchements of Irian Aros."

The Aerendalen seems to have set his mind. Where the scrolls go so shall he.

Ulwe also has some suggestions:

Dobrug is an excellent destination. The Olmanii traders there may be some help in translating the scrolls. Also the Locamyrida, the temple of Orlanth in Dobrug is a place of knowledge unrivalled in all of Moagara. Orlanth is a God which favors knowledge and wisdom...

[There are certainly some wise folk in Dobrug, and some of them gather around the Locamyrida. Is it a place of knowledge unrivaled in all Moagara? No. Not even in the top five, really.

Orlanth does not particularly favor knowledge, at least not any more than it is favored by Yelm, Hroldi and Chalana Arroy.

Orlanth is the god of Air and Water, but is also chief among the Lightbringers. As such the Wind God favors strong leadership and tactical accumen. His worshipers are often energetic, charismatic and valiant, ever among the vanguard of any battle. Orlanth is widely worshiped, more so than any other god in Moagara. He is particularly favored by sailors, who depend on both the wind and water for their survival. Orlanth’s weapon is the spear. -GM]

After the side mission to the mining village the party could plan on wintering in or near Dobrug. Maybe even back in Werthyn. I'm not sure how much travelling we can do one the snows come.

Lastly Ulwe suggests a short delay for the party to get ready...

Madrtagar should try to make a scroll or two and Sangaal could do well to get the spell componenets to make Holy Water.

We also need to provision the party for an extended journey through the wilds....

Too much for one poor little dwarf to consider.
Just then Draxim comes in from the kitchen having been dispatched by Madfiln to distribute some fried nut and meat pastries. Oblivious to Ulwe's suggestiong of a moment before he blusters, "By the way, I have laid in some supplies for our journey. I got a shovel a small tent, a lot of rope, a hammer, some trail food, winter gear for meself, some spikes and a grappling hook in case we have to do some climbing in the mines, and some torches and oil, but we could always use more of that commodity." He pauses a moment as inventory takes place in his head, just out of reach of a hungry, and now slightly irritated Gurugil. "I should be able to carry it all." he nods his head agreeing with himself finally, and goes back to the kitchen with an almost full platter.

Re: Too much for one poor little dwarf to consider.
Excusing himself Sangraal retreats to his guest quarters spending most of the day in seqlusion. Emerging shortly before dusk with prayermat in hand Sangraal proceeds to the grounds outside the hall to perform the prayer of DaysEnd.

Though not uncommon, Sangraal stays outside well past sundown contimplating the different pathes that have presented themselves. Eventually the growling of his stomach brings back inside the hall.

The sweet aroma of hot fresh meat only encourages his stomach and Sangraal moves to a place at the table. Siting between two of the Ghurugil ( he does'nt know who, they all look the same to him) Sangraal overhears the news that the party has steadly returned to the same path which cheers him greatly.

Waving a chicken leg to Ulwe "It bodes well that we then choose our path together. By traveling off the roads with the Merek Lek," he gestures with the chickenleg/pointer to Atan " we we hopefully shake the malcontents that stalk Madragar and now hunt us. Your counsel is well regarded! And I would have missed the oppertunity to futher our theological discussions."

"A day or two to gather our gear then we should be good to go."

[OOC: How long do people think they need to get the gear they want and get out of this town?

Re: Too much for one poor little dwarf to consider.
"If people prepare this evening and early tommorow we can be on the road by tommorow. Unless anyone has some specific preparation that requires more time, leaving by noon shouldn't be a problem."

"It will take us three and a half days at dwarf speed to reach the Skytower and another three days south to Theadrun. Rope, oil and water may once again become the most important commodities. Bring plenty of food but we should be able to supplement our food with a little wild game along the way."

[That's the Tower of Mists, the former home of Madragar and Edrigan. There is no Skytower. -GM]

Ever heard of Gimli Mr. Tact-of-a-Charging-Minotaur?
Draxim goggles at the highly offensive "dwarf speed" comment. His face turns red at the insult to their gracious hosts, and he plays with his food nervously. Some truths are better left unspoken.

Re: Ever heard of Gimli Mr. Tact-of-a-Charging-Minotaur?
Atan, realizing that he spoke without much political correctness upon sighting the reddening Draxim, "I am sorry. I only meant to give everyone a gauge with which to judge our speed of travel and meant no insult to those velocity challenged." Atan beams with the jest.

instead of walking...
"Perhaps we could get horses," says Ruglan. "We could cover alot more distance."

Ruglan asks the Ghurugil about where the horse merchants are in Raven's Gate. "I'll go check and see what is available."

Ruglan will go find out how much horses are.

Re: instead of walking...
"Regardless of the speed we take, we should be prepared for anything along these roads. I am ready whenever everyone else is. Those parchments, should be well hidden. I am rather alarmed at the quickness, it seems, to allow any stranger to look upon these scrolls from my departed friend. I think that we should use wisdom in how we approach the task of translating these things. I fear that these unseen enemies may have eyes in places that we know not. However, my sword and bow are at your services, and may the Gods allow me the privledge to serve you well" Kaleb says with a bow to the group.

"Horses will help our speed, but once we enter the valley there will be few well marked paths. The area we head to is rocky and will make slow going for horses as well as us.

"Is getting horses really that neccessary? I, for one, cannot afford such luxuries, but are they really needed, besides speed? With the hard terrain ahead, the horses will not be useful and that would be wasted money, in my opinion"

Re: instead of walking...
Sangraal spends the rest of the night fixing his armor, adjusting straps, procuring standard equipment from the generous Ghurugil patrons.
At one point Sangraal appears in the common room holding his flail.

Asking the dwarves in the common room " How hard is it to place a steel rivet into the head of this flail? I have need to put..." Sangraal halts obviously counting in his head "..seven, no, no eight steel rivets into it. Brass rivets would be better is you have them?"

Re: instead of walking...
Llovas grimaces as he surveys the grizzly, primitive farm-implement Sangraal calls a weapon. The red-haired dwarf inspects the cracked wood of the flail head, and the dented bands of steel wrapped around it.

"Gah, a more awkward weapon I have never seen... no disrespect intended young Sangraal. Wouldn't you rather have a good sturdy mace or morning star? Something of proper steel, eh?"

You swing it like this....
Drawing the flail protectively to his chest "No weapon is finer." he states flatly. Studying it carefully, Sangraal himself grimaces at the ill tended wood. " Must not have been oiled for years." he admits "Maybe a new head would be appropiate, as it has seen better days."

[OOC: Can the dwarfs put put a new head on it? and put in some steel/brass knobs, 1 for each broo smited. ]

Re: You swing it like this....
Llovas smiles. "Sangraal, if I remove the head all you'll have left is a broomstick. Besides, I don't think the wood can handle the replacement of these rivets, let alone a new chain and bands."

"A new flail then?" Sangraal asks Llovas. "Do you think the metal could be melted down and reforged in the new weapon? She did carried me through Old Kurlew"

Re: You swing it like this....
Llovas gets a sour look on his face. He doesn't seem crazy about the idea of making a flail, and clearly doesn't understand Sangraal's fascination with the crude weapon.

"I'd need a new piece of wood, so it would have to wait until tomorrow... maybe have it finished by the afternoon."

Holy Water
[Just to make it more clear I'll stick to ooc for now:
We should seriously consider pooling some resources = MONEY to get some holy water. 50 gold for the components. It could come in very handy later on...
Also If Madragar plans on joining the party in the mines he may wish to write up a scroll or two. they could come in VERY handy later.
If I had money I'd spend it on Holy Water and scrolls but alas I have none... so It is up to the others but These are party items sort of...
Also to make it clear those who can go to Medium encumbrance should. maybe Atan and Kelib would do well to be light but that can always be solved by dropping a pack so We should use all of our available man power to carry supplies. Also a mule may be a useful party member... remember old Bill?
Before we set out lets all compare our eq lists to make sure we don't overlap too much or forget things we need.]
