The Outer Worlds and Spirit Combat
Beyond the walls of the World, beyond the fiery brilliance of Yelm, and beyond the distant stars lies the churning, destructive Sea of Chaos. In waves of hate, rage and merciless mutation it crashes against Yelm's Creation, ever seeking its demise. Chaos and Yelm exist in eternal conflict, the former always threatening to overwhelm the Sun God.
Yet, within the world of Yelm there are many planes of existance, and some are more resistant to the influence of Chaos than others. The six elemental planes (Light, Fire, Air, Earth, Water and Darkness) are joined by a seventh - the Spirit Plane. It is a strange and inexplicable place in which thought and emotion become reality and vast uncontrolled energies wait for mortals to unleash them. Of the seven planes this is the least understood by the common folk of Moagara, and discussions of its nature are the domain of priests and wizards, though also a sure way to confuse the locals.
Like the living things that populate the World, the denizens of the Spirit Plane are diverse and imperfect. The barriers between the worlds are thin and it is not uncommon for a formless Spirit to enter the physical world. Although some are benevolent, many more are not and they are a constant plague on all living things. When a being of the physical world comes in contact (or is attacked by) a Spirit, both creatures enter a strange half-existence in which each must struggle to overcome the other. There are many names for it among the Moagari, but for the sake of clarity I'll be refering to it as Spirit Combat.

Spirit Combat
Two entities, whether they be living creatures, demons, or hostile spirits, engage in spirit combat in order to achieve some kind of dominance or influence. For a spirit this could be the habitation of a living creature which inflicts harm on the victim in the form of a disease or other malady. Demons may try to gain control of a mortal through possession.
All creatures have a hidden statistic called Power which equals its Hit Dice or Level plus the sum of its Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma modifiers. In each round of Spirit Combat the adversaries make Will saving throws with a DC equal to 10 + the Power of their opponent. A failed saving throw drains 1D3 Power. The first combatant to zero Power loses the contest. Power returns at a rate of one point per day but can be recovered through Restoration or Lesser Restoration spells.
