The Tower
When they are assembled, Madragar says to the others "The runes on the trap door concern me. I suggest you let me attempt to translate them before we touch anything within."

"Thats fine with me. But lets be careful all around. I can scout ahead, before the rest and see if there are any Broo or anything worse hanging around the tower"

Re: The Tower
[Madragar: do you have a spare crossbow string? Hrun still has your first one.]

Ruig steps out of the inn and takes a deep breath of the chill morning air. He never put down his pack, so is as ready as he was when he arrived a few hours earlier.

"Are we ready?"

Re: The Tower
"No. I am missing a crossbow string. If any of you do not have one, our first order of business should be to recover mine from the ungrateful lout who took it."

[OOC: Adios. I'm out of here until Sunday night.]

Re: The Tower
"I am ready" Kezib places his pack on his back, twirls his quarterstaff in an impressive show of childish play and immediately changes to a serious manner and scans the horizon for anyone coming or going. Listening for any sounds that are irregular.

Re: The Tower
Ruig drops his pack and starts rummaging.

"You're in luck my young friend. My old crossbow was broken by a large mazul up near Nralhaus a few weeks ago. I sold the bolts but kept the string."

Ruig produces a worn but functional crossbow string.

"It's Imperial standard, so it should fit that weapon."

Re: The Tower
Madragar inclines his head. "Excellent. My thanks. I am no trained man of arms, but an extra bolt in a tight spot may prove to be of some value. Now, let us see to those runes."

He looks expectently at Ruig.

Re: The Tower
Without another word Ruig leads Kezib, Draxim and Madragar up the hill to the tower. Before they reach the structure, they can all see the five men and elves of the other group moving southwest up the slope toward the treeline.

The tower itself has obviously been abandoned for some time. Bits of the crenelations have fallen onto the hillside and long creeping vines reach almost to the top of the tower. It stands around forty feet tall and is thirty feet on a side, made of the stout stone blocks common to Lunar architecture. The main door is on the south/uphill side of the edifice and stands ajar when the group reaches it. Kezib, having been here before, leads the group in.

The interior of the tower is almost entirely hollow. The floor of the second level is completely gone, giving an unobstructed view of the roof above. The ground is covered in dirt, sparsely scattered weeds and worthless debris. Four wooden columns stand equally spaced about the chamber, obviously meant to support the upper floor. Against the east wall of the room sits a shallow depression in which a trapdoor is visible. It looks as if it was covered in an inch of dirt but has been recently excavated. The trapdoor is currently closed.

Ruig moves to the trapdoor and crouches down before it. A few moments later and he rises, pulling his warhammer from his belt.

"Chaos, down below. No strong, but..."

Re: The Tower
Draxim loads his crossbow. He scans the roof above them, taking in the details of construction, paying particular attention to how secure the roof is.
"Kezim, is there a ladder down, or shall I set up the rope that Meneloss so kindly loaned us? "

Re: The Tower
"There is no ladder of any sort. That was the main reason why Sangraal and I didnt go down and investigate further. The drop is about (OOC: Cant remember exactly) 10 feet or so. I can help if you want."

Note to GM:
*Kezib, during this is going to be try to be very aware of his surroundings. He will be listening as best he can, among the hubub going on and very much scaning what he can*

Re: The Tower
[Okie dokie.]

"Well, only one way to go from here," says Ruig, and opens the trapdoor.

Almost immediately a puff of gray smoke mixed with black and green vapors drifts out of the dark basement. It doesn't behave as normal, fire-produced smoke though. The cloud is sluggish, floating upward almost lazily and is not of uniform density. The cloud also stinks of death, a disgusting mixture of rotting meat and old urine.

After a few moments the first, large cloud passes through the trapdoor and floats slowly upward toward the roof. It is followed by a steady, narrow stream of green and gray smoke. Ruig holds his nose closed.

Re: The Tower
Following suit as Ruig, Kezib holds his nose as well. Taking a step back and gets into a defensive stance. (Crane stance)

Re: The Tower
[Madragar sagely concludes that the smoke is smelly.]

The four soon-to-be-intrepid explorers brace themselves for a minute or so, waiting for some nameless horror to come lurching out at them. Yet, nothing happens. Ruig shrugs.

"The build up of smoke must have been what I sensed." With that he unceremoniously flops down on his belly and sticks his head into the opening.

"There's the door, and the corpse as well," Ruig's says in a muffled voice. "And... ah, the door is open a bit. That's where the smoke is coming from."

Rising, he looks to the other three. "No ladder. So, who's got the rope?"

Re: The Tower
"That would be me." Draxim uncoils the rope and looks around for something to secure the rope to. [If he fails to find anything he can either put a spike (or 2) into the ground (using Ruig's hammer with his permission) and belay or just lower people down himself using his manly strength. Don't forget that use rope skill.]

Re: The Tower
One of the four wooden columns is standing not ten feet from the trapdoor, and is the same column Kezib and Sangraal used the day before. Draxim ties a double-muskrat-boltloop-knot and drops the rest of the rope down the hole. Ruig is on the rope and descending before it hits the floor.

A few seconds later and he calls up "all clear."

Re: The Tower
Careful to uncock his crossbow first, Madragar slowly descends the rope. When he reaches the bottom, he methodically recocks the bow before examining his surroundings.

Re: The Tower
Crouched beneath the trapdoor, a pale shaft of light illuminating his efforts, Madragar sparks a torch and takes a few steps toward the center of the chamber. The place is the same dimensions as the tower: 30' x 30'. Four large granite columns support a network of long, horizontal blocks fifteen feet above, which in turn support a number of large flagstones that make up ground floor of the tower. The craftsmanship is excellent, and the dwarves share a few words of praise for the masons. It is typical Lunar architecture... built to last for centuries.

The basement is free of debris, and is filled with the stale odor of decay. Against the north wall a motionless, desicated corpse lays in a heap, a massive iron chain shackling it to a bolt in the floor. To the south, the notorious door stands.

The double door is eight feet high and wide, and made of solid stone six inches thick. In the flickering firelight the intricate spiraling Lunar runes seem to move on their own. The two slabs have no obvious hinge mechanism but stand slightly ajar. A thin trail of the nauseating smoke drifts from the crack at the top of the door, up to the ceiling, and out the trapdoor. There is also a recessed, circular area in the center of the door about nine inches in diameter - one semicircle on each slab of stone. By Sangraal's description, when the door was closed that depression was filled by a circular disk of light gray stone. The disk, however, is nowhere to be found.
