The course of true love never did run so smooth. (ISO Steph)
Chris sighed...something he'd been doing a lot of ever since Bryan told him. He never could have believed Toni would have pulled a giant note onto the Great Hall, asking him to come back to her. The only problem was that he'd been fed up with Hogwarts for once, and had left after Quidditch season was over...taking his finals early and everything.
However, he didn't care anymore. He would have been just a bother on her "big, giant friggin' plans" of becoming an Auror, even if they had stuck together. He'd been laying down on the shade of a tree for a long time thinking about this...and quite frankly, he was over it all. Maybe it'd never been meant to work...and that this was nothing but experience for the future.
"Damnit...why does everything has to take a nosedive every time it all goes well?" he asked to himself, thinking very outloud.

"You know, I ask the same thing-and quite often, really," came an almost eerily quiet voice of a tall, thin blonde. Well-eerily quiet compared to her normal loudness. "Sometimes I think, maybe things just weren't even going well at all-we just made them out to be well in our minds, when really we were royally screwing ourselves over in the first place," Steph Martin said, shrugging. She hadn't had such a tremendously good past couple of years, either... She had hurt Bryan, one of her good friends, only to be up and ditched by Seth Gilmore the second something better came along. Not that Seth Gilmore would have been her first choice from the start, though. She shrugged inwardly, taking a seat ext to Chris whether her friend liked it or not. She knew he had been through far more than she had-she had seen the love in his eyes every time he had looked at Toni. Maybe had even been a little jealous of it, for that matter, although she was sure she'd die before admitting it. She smiled at him apologetically, though, not wanting to come across as rude or awful-she knew how upset he probably still was, after overhearing Bryan and Haley talking about it.

"Oh, hiya Steph," he said, not sounding excited at all. He'd complain about her sitting there, but she seemed to have a lot on her shoulders too...he could guess exactly why though. "I'm a horrible person, aren't I? For a moment, I was thinking those past two years with Toni were nothing, but useless dramatic garbage. Maybe I should've never fallen in love to begin with..."

"Love sucks," Steph said simply, with a shrug. "I've seen more people in these halls just end up hurt... More people that I care about, too. My brothers, my friends, my may-as-well be family... I don't understand why they let people do that to them. But... but they don't regret it. And you can't either... Everything happens for a reason, you know?" THe blond was sure she wasn't making much sense, her views going from one end to teh next in rapid succession, but when she opened her mouth, words just came out. She thought back to John William and Laura, Prescott and Alyssa, Clayton and Ravie... all failed relationships. Yet they had all come out of things well, and without hard feelings... It would be so much simpler if everything could always end up like that.

"What reason could it be though?" he replied, a little bit more frustrated now. He had been kept told that all summer by all kinds of people, but why...why was the question now. "What in the world did I do to deserve such friggin' luck like that?"
