Thru the eyes of the Dragon Elder
It's an all in one go thing. For refrence in Sandra and Chargon really.
Thru the eyes of the Dragon Elder
Have you ever wondered how the Dragons and griffons locked horns in war? Why it all happened? Why now there is a Dragon Protector known as Sandra although she has yet to learn the truth? There have been protectors throughout the ages. Man and myths didn’t collide as bad as it does now. This tale is going to show what happened all that time ago that started a bitter rivalry and hate between two higher powers.
Way back in the distance past the Dragons and griffons were allies not enemies like they are now. All the creatures of myths and fairy tales looked up to these higher powers for guidance. They helped protect them from the growing problem that was man down below. Winged horses sailed the air. Mermaids flew though the sea. For all them it was paradise. That was until something happened. The Dragon elder will now tell the tale. The Dragons are spilt you see. There are groups within a clan of Dragons. The elder however governs over all Clans. He guides them all although the years are slowly advancing on him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As you know now, I am the Dragon Elder, the protector of all Dragon clans. I have seen them all though many hardships such as drought and storms. The man’s world was of no concern to us as long as we were left in peace. Seems so different now. My senses have very much dimmed as the years slowly past. My sight is lost to me and my hearing has seen better years. Considering that I am still well respected.
It all began with a day that seemed like no other. Birds chirped a melodious tune that woke me from a nearing eternal slumber. I yawned and felt some unintended little bit of grey smoke come from my scorching lungs. My own caved lair was split away from the others. It was higher into the rocky rise we made into our home. Hardly a thing was in my lair because I never really saw the need for any real belongings. I struggled onto my feet and walked out of my resting cave.
I stretched my claws a little and gave another yawn. My tail still flicked alert of anything while my wings just hung loosely. I flew very little anymore due to the pain of my aching muscles. Still even I enjoy a leisurely flight from time to time. I turned to an old leafless tree that rested on the balcony of rock in front of it.
A Thrush opened it’s beak wide and sung of the new morning that I had arisen to. I stood staring in wonder at the little bird. I may no longer be able to see the little creature but not all of my senses are lost to me yet. I could feel it bobbing up and down on the ground as it came to my paw. It gently pecked my scaled foot to let me know where it was. I twisted my neck and stared at the Thrush with lifeless eyes. It moved towards my face and gently rubbed an old scar with it’s beak. Such sweet things birds are. I nodded to the Thrush and jumped from my balcony. I then gently glided to the caves, which lay beneath my own.
The cries of a hungry brood were a welcoming sound. Hawkeye’s little hatchlings never seem to do much else as yet. Hawk Eyes is a mother to the hatchlings I hear as well as being a Clan Leader. She decided to stay here rather than move so her clan also stays within my rocky village if you like. She was named after her amazing sight and that she enjoys flying with hawks and watching them wheel though the air. How I miss seeing those golden eyes.
‘Honourable Elder! Such a pleasure it is for you to visit.’ The ground shook slightly as she leaned down to bow. That is how I am greeted. I try to persuade them otherwise yet they still do it. Such a rebellious clan they are.
‘Good morning fair Hawk Eyes. How are your little hatchlings?’ She chuckled a little.
‘Oh the same you would expect from any. Wanted to explore everything and always asking questions. It’s hard just keeping them in the nest for five minutes.’ Then a little squeak by her paw emerged.
‘Mum? Where’s dinner? I’m hungry! And Fire Strike bit me!’ A faint little sob came from the baby.
‘Now now you go back inside. Tell him he’s in trouble and I’ll talk to him later. I’m going to get your dinner after I’ve finished talking. Go on now.’
A faint little patter headed back to the nest. I chuckled a little myself.
‘It’s amazing you can tell one from the other my dear. They all sound the same to me.’
‘I guess since I’m close to them I can tell them apart. Now please excuse me. I have six little mouths that need feeding if they don’t wake everyone up first.’ I hear her beat her powerful wings and rise into the air. When I was sure she had left, I went to take a look myself.
‘Hey your not mum!’
‘Oi this is our nest! Go away!’
I sighed. So much they need to learn. ‘Your mother just left to find food for you all. It’s no wonder her paws are always full.’
‘It’s you who talked to mum! Who are you?’ Familiar squeak asked.
‘You youngsters have so much to learn. I’m the Elder of all the Dragon Clans. Now young one. I answered you so what are you called?’
I felt a little nudge on my paw.
‘Can’t you guess when you see me?’ I shook my head.
‘Alas my vision is lost now. I can’t see anything anymore.’
‘’It’s Golden Scales. Unlike my brothers and sisters, I’m a golden colour.’
I sought a vision of a young hatchling in my head. Then changed the green to gold.’
‘You must look as beautiful as your mother Golden Scales. Such a fitting a fitting name for you as well. Ah I hear you mother coming I better go.’ I slowly walked out of the cave with little cries of joy behind me.
I began to feel weary again. I barely managed to open my wings so I could lift myself back up to my own cave. Half stumbling in flight, I barely made it back up. I almost crawled back to my sleeping area and drifted off into a deep slumber.
‘Honourable Elder! Quickly wake up!’ two voices echoed near my ears. I wasn’t very happy about being woken up so I lifted my head and stared at the newcomers. If I wasn’t so drowsy, I would have never made such a mistake that I’ll later regret.
‘Yes young ones calm down. What is it?’ I felt them shuffle on their claws.
‘It’s the creatures we call Man!’
Yes them! Nightfire was flying overhead when they shot him down. Heaven knows what they are doing to him.’ My rage overcame me.
‘Where did you see them?’
‘We were flying over to visit this clan when we heard a piercing howl. You must have been too deep in your sleep to here.’
‘We looked to find what it was and saw Nightfire being brought down with wood with sharp stone on the end.’
‘We came back to report to you. I hope he’s ok.’ I stumble upwards, not letting my tired muscles pull me back down.
‘Find all the Clan leaders and hurry! We must summon a meeting immediately!’ I charged out of my cave and into the open air. The meeting place was secret, thankfully not far from my cave. I powered my wings and flew as fast as they would let me. I pray Nightfire is ok.
We all sat by the grand stone table in silence. Hawk Eyes and Wing Blade were nearest to me. Including me there was six of us, all ready to do what they had to for their Clan’s survival. They had heard the news the youngsters had given them. A faint sob came from Hawk Eyes. Nightfire is the father of her young ones. He must live for their survival at all costs. I’m sure the other leaders felt the same way. I turned to Hawk Eyes and placed my arm around her neck. She sobbed onto my shoulder praying he was still alive. ‘Don’t we all’ I whispered softly.
‘My fellow Clan Leaders. The decision of what we should do must be made. A life depends on it.’ I heard Razor Tail slam his paw on the table.
‘I say we fight! All my members will agree to the decision. It’s the only option we have.’
‘Absolutely! Mankind does not deserve to live after such an act.’ Scar Face yelled into the air. Every other Dragon called into the air. The decision was left to me. Everyone had chosen fight. ‘This is for you Nightfire. We fight!’ I roared into the air. Their joy ripped though the air like claws though a tee. I hope I made the right choice. Although now I know what I should of done.
Within about an hour, the word had gotten around and all the Dragon Clans were here where our own resides. All looking ready for a fierce battle like something had consumed their hearts. The entire group of mother’s within all the Clans and their hatchlings had also come to reside in Hawk Eye’s nesting area. Being a leader she felt she had to go fight as well. How I tried to persuade her otherwise with no avail. No was going no matter what. I walked out onto my balcony and stared out at the winged death that flew before me. Blackened hearts and fierce minds, I hope it doesn’t blind them from the job at hand.
‘My friends please!’ I got angry snarls in return. ‘Don’t let your pride get the better of you in the battle. It will only lead your own demise. Don’t let the darkness blind your eyes as it’s deceived your hearts.’ More snarls. I stepped down. Nothing I could say would make any difference. I listened to the winged death fly away on powerful wings. I had to seek the Griffons. Maybe they can help us in someway.
‘How are you my friend?’
‘Ah the years have been kind to you unlike me.’
‘Nonsense you look the same as I last saw you before my sight went.’
I had reached where the Griffons lived and was talking to what we consider an ‘Elder’.
‘We do have problem though. Two of our young ones went missing earlier. Feather Blade and Talon Claw. I haven’t seen either of them all day. Their poor mother has gone frantic. They have been fully fledged but she still looks after them.’ I chuckled.
‘No I haven’t. Why isn’t that my Thrush friend singing?’
‘It sure sounds like one. Come I’ll lead you to it.’
I didn’t need help but I didn’t want to insult my friend. I stood where the sound was loudest.
‘Well what do you have to tell my now my young friend?’ I often talked to the Thrushes. They are such lovely birds. They may not be able to speak like we do but they can tell all in their song.
‘Eagle beasts you say? Must mean a Griffon, wait two.’ I continued listening to the song.
‘Young ones, came over to our mountain, went into my lair while I slept. Wait two creatures were there that woke me up.’
‘They could have been our two. They love playing jokes on anyone they can.’
‘Jokes?’
‘Yes fibs and little pranks and such like.’
‘Two creatures told me that Nightfire was taken down by man’s arrows.’
‘Sounds just the thing they would do. They play tricks on the young and old alike.’
‘By the Elders! All the Dragon Clans, expect the young and mothers, went down to get the humans for what they did to Nightfire! So much pain that could have been avoided!’
‘You mean all your Clans? Such a sad day that has fallen upon us all. Quickly, we must get back to your area and see what we can do if anything at all.’
We flew as fast as we could, praying they were still alive.
‘Hawk Eyes!’ I could hear her in great pain.
‘Here my friend let me get the arrow out.’
‘Get away from me traitor!’ He held back. What was she talking about?
‘All the Dragons were killed because of your race!’ She screamed with the pain of her battered body and the pain in her heart.
‘All, all of them?’ I barely whispered
‘All the fault of these traitors you call friends. I saw two Griffons laughing as our forces clashed with man. Laugh at the pain and agony. Nightfire was never there at first. He appeared late in the battle, flying back from a hunt. He, he took one of those arrows for me. Those men used those arrows to try and kill me when I was distracted. He took the arrow meant for me, straight into his heart.’ Her tears welled. I couldn’t believe it. All my friends killed because of two jokers. Two jokers who tricked me when I was most vulnerable.
‘Dragons weren’t fighting for the honour of Nightfire; they were fighting for their lives. I was lucky to have even come back here. Now you shall pay traitor!’
I felt her move towards my friend. He barely dodged her onslaught. All her pain she was taking out on him. I heard the flap of his feathers then he was gone. ‘You call his kind friends? Because of them we will all die. Man is determined now, determined to get rid of us forever. All the creatures they think do not exist will now die because of them.’ She slowly struggled back to her young ones leaving me alone.
I had to see it for myself. Summoning all my power I rode into the skies. Very soon I could tell I was over the former battlefield. There was a power I had learnt of before my sight was lost. It was called Mind’s eye and let me see whatever I chose. However it was a great drain of my strength so I rarely used it, even if I did I wouldn’t for very long. I let the air hold me while I concentrated.
Fires burning. Bodies everywhere wrapped in blood. Man and Dragon alike. Young and old, female and male. Bodies broken and torn with little stirring other than diseased rats checking out their new bounty of food. I couldn’t look any longer so my sight returned to darkness. I flew back to my lair to mourn.
I had been in my lair for days. No longer caring of my duties. I had failed as an elder. A tattoo was on my right shoulder blade. A special one that the former elder had given to me. It was called the Dragon Eye. It is able to grant special power to the Dragon who has it but something is wrong. Ever since Hawk Eyes called the Griffon Elder a Traitor, it’s usual power has gone leaving me weaker. ‘The key must be found again.’ I muttered.
I had to repay man in someway for my mistake. No Dragon will see me again till I pass on to the next world. Only this will be able to tell them. No matter my age I will help man and beast alike for the rest of my years. To try and rid myself of the guilt in my heart. Man will never fully trust me but I’ll help regardless. My old healing powers left with the Griffons friendship and I have lost much of my power. I vow to protector this world for as long as my life will let me.
If you have discovered this, it is my way of showing other generations what happened that has caused a bitter rivalry. As I can no longer be in person, learn the ways of the protector and maybe one day, have the Griffons as allies once more.
