Trying something new
In a stroke of sheer madness, mostly prompted by my gaming group's embarking on a new D&D 3.5 campaign, and their insistance that I was going to play a elf/halfelf rogue like always...

Level 3 Human Sorceress
50 year old alchemist, apothecary, and midwife with minor self-learned spellcasting skills decides that having been delivering babies and making potions and items for folks in town for the past thirty years has become secondary to trying to regain her youth (3E has humans losing Str, Con, and Dex at 53 years old).

She meets up with other members in her party in town after a 'tournament' that they've all participated in one of the three events (1st "Archery" - 2nd "The Gauntlet" - 3rd "Grand Melee")

Stats were bought on a 30 point scale, as I recall, this is what I have:

Str 10
Dex 10
Con 12
Wis 15
Int 15
Cha 16

Alignment is Chaotic Good.

Friend who is GM'ing is saying something about spellcasters being a bit mistrusted in his world, and need to be registered with the authorities, much as firearms would be in our world. I find out more later, we didn't get to that the first week.

Most of "Maggie"'s spells are divination and stuff like feather fall anyway, chosen before I knew that spellcasters were legally prohibited from casting offensive magic in quite a few situations, didn't fit with her character (a portly older woman who's not done much but help folks out over the past years) much, I felt.

(Back In Black)
Delissandra Splitshadow - Marauder of Clan X
Grandmaster Poisoner (250), Master Potter (195), Grandmaster Lush (200)

Its always fun to take an "Ordinary" into an adventuring group. :D

Ive played 'Pesants' more than once. Some of them turn out better than my 'Heros'. Always entertaining.

Ooh... sounds like fun. Yeah, I always get ragged on for making rogues all the time, so I try to switch it up a bit sometimes and surprise my group members. My latest incarnation: A Kobold 3rd level psionic warrior/2nd level fighter. And they thought my rogues got the party in trouble... :evil

Ooohh.. so shiney!

If you really want that "non-adventurer" feel, you should make the character an Adept NPC class from the DMG.

People tend to underestimate the ordinary, or those who are disfigured. Played a 4ft 4inch extremely hideous (comliness 5) clubfooted wujen. He was very smart however, and eventually passed the mandarin exams and became a power in court politics. Woe to the swordsman who crossed his path.

Ouch. The adept class is woefully underpowered versus a normal PC class. While it could work for a few levels, I think it would get blown away after about level 5 or 6. Of course, if the DM is flexible with encounter strength, and the player doesn't mind being underpowered...

I think I would pass ;)

Re: Trying something new
I usually like gimped characters.

In a Changeling game we played I took a ton of flaws, more than you're supposed to be allowed. I haggled with the GM and he told me that as long as I RP'd them, I could have the points for them. I RPed this guy to the max.

He was a male Childling Nocker, about 10 years old. Child, Asthmatic, Troglodyte Flaw (bright light kills his eyes, like disorientation and like halves all successes but can see super good in the dark), Short, Addicted (cigarettes and Inhalers) horrible combo, and Neglected which is a Childling only flaw. He became one of my favorite characters because he was this horribly sick little kid who just made due with what he had. It got to the point where the GM said, I can't give you anymore flaw points and I was like, ok...but can I just take the flaws for free then? :p

Most people want to play Adonis, I want to play the outcast.

Re: Trying something new
picked a picture of an old woman that my DM friend said looked more like seventy

I said, if she looks like that at fifty, you can see why she wants to find the fountain of youth. ;)
