Using a Horse, a guide for casters
This post was taken from http://eqcleric.gameglow.com, written by Electrae.
This is a FAQ for horses.
Horses are pretty and very useful animals but to get the most out of them you have to make them invisible. This first section tells you how to use an invisible horse. It doesn't really matter what sort of horse you buy, especially if it's invisible. So unless you're extremely wealthy, just buy the cheapest horse.
What color of horse to get? Well, your vanity will dictate that. The tan and brown horses are the cheapest. However, some of us (/blush) have been known to buy black and white horses even though we play with the models off!
Invisible Horses
You have to turn off all the Luclin models not just your race. You do it in the Options menu before the server selection screen. It doesn't matter if the horse models are on or off.
With invisible horses you can duck out of spells without dismounting.
Your mana bar won't update until you cast a spell or use a right clicky spell, I just click the bridle which fails instantly and the mana bar gets updated.
If horse models are off and you have SoW you won't have that annoying startup time that horses make. However, you will run at the speed of the character not the horse. Another reason not to bother investing in the expensive horses.
Visible Horses
If you must see old Mushpot then be prepared for a harder life.
You have to dismount in order to duck out of spells. Type /dism and then duck. Or you can click off the summon horse icon.
Horses are hard for you to see around and quite often others as well. Get a shrink 2x and you will be able to see around him much easier.
If your horse is visible you'll have the startup times to deal with. 0 to 60 in X seconds. You might want to buy the more expensive model of horse to get a faster start up.
Targetting with your mouse on horseback is very difficult with models on. Makes master looting a huge PITA. Might try using a different camera angle.
Another way to get that big old horse head out of your way is to get invisibility. When invisibility wears off you'll be visible again, but your horse won't be until you zone or evac or camp. Be sure to take off any See Invisible items or effects otherwise this won't work.
In General
All horses give you mana regen as if you were sitting as long as you aren't moving and aren't in combat. Even while you are casting spells!
You avoid sitting aggro by sitting on a horse.
Yaulp and horses don't stack.
Horses seem to nibble out of your food supply, so be prepared to buy tons of food to keep old Mushpot from starving you out.
If you have horse models on and try to heal someone who is on a horse in certain PoP zones you'll get an oor message. Trials is infamous for this. Have said person dismount and remount to make the problem go away.
Horse Bugs
If you go through a portal, like in the PoJ Trials or in BoT, chances are you'll be constantly "out of range" for any spells. Be sure to dismount and resummon your Glue Factory.
If you camp with an invisible horse, even if you dismount shortly before you camp, you'll go LD right after you reach 5 seconds. (Not sure if this happens with visible horses, I think not).
Sometimes you will get stuck in a "posting" animation and it looks like you're a true horse lover, of the basest sort! Very embarassing to be asked to dismount your horse because you're "humping" it.
I have found that I can leave on Vah Shir models and turn off all the other Luclin models and horses do something interesting. When you summon your horse (if you're Vah Shir, not sure about other races) it'll stay where you summon it, or stay at the zone in if you zoned in with it. It'll just park itself there and you still get all the benfits, but it'll be grazing elsewhere while you play.
Re: Using a Horse, a guide for casters
I get a message
"you must have Luclin modles for your race and horse modles turned on to use a horse" /shrugs..
I was in PoT .. any ideas
-- Ask me!! I just might -- Benik 56 Druid, Raganok 55 Rouge, Healinghandz 61 Cleric -- all 3 accounts PoP enabled

I checked the thread, Ben, and these were a couple of the suggetions for the problem you're having:
"Do you have your model on? If you have your model on, that is your problem. Turn it off, too."
"You have to turn off all the Luclin models not just your race. You do it in the Options menu before the server selection screen. It doesn't matter if the horse models are on or off."
