V is for Vanished Vengeance Vendetta:
V is for Vanished, Vengeance, Vendetta:
An Explanation of Genevieve Vendetta's Two Week Absence from Class
"Here, princess."
V turns coolly around. No one is there. Just the cold stones that make up the wall. And the shadows. Poise, grace, follows the length of her spine; the slender frame, the narrow shoulders, the tailored sweeping black peacoat. Two rows of buttons; tiny, brassy, brings out the amber-gold in her gaze. Oh, her gaze is resonant with warmth.
"Hello?" she says, crisply. "Hello?"
Nobody answers.
V is in English class when an aid from the school office shows up. He interrupts the teacher; the class; and the teacher raises eyebrows at a slip of paper; before turning to the classroom and saying, "Genevieve Vendetta. Principal's office."
Genevieve's head lifts; she is a proud girl. Vendetta; it is a proud name, and it makes people afraid. When the snickers start up she does not seem to notice. Instead she gathers her books neatly and slides them off the table into her knapsack. She walks to the door. She is graceful, elegant, and there is one loud, jealous remark from a girl in the back, followed by, "Snob."
Genevieve follows the aid to the Principal's office. She takes a seat in front of his desk, does not look to the side, but says softly, "Uncle."
Michael Vendetta is seated in the chair beside her. Smoking. He's young. Twenty-seven; thirty? He's got one of those faces. He could be anything. His eyes are smoke: kitsune gold, like Genevieve's, exactly. His hair is shockwave white: frost and fire. He would suit the nickname frost. Or killer. And he's got a killer smile.
"V. I'm taking you out of school for a couple of weeks. Dad wishes to see you."
Michael Vendetta is the Vendetta scion of the blood. He can call Grandfather 'Dad' instead of 'Father' when Grandfather is not around. He heir to all its brutality, its cruelty, its wealth and its intelligence. He is the perfect son. When Michael Vendetta does something that something stays done. Not even Grandfather, who has lived time out of mind, can always question Michael. He commands the loyalty of his men and not through fear. He is loved, with all this. And his niece loves him.
"Why?" - she asks, and she does not sound afraid.
"Because," Michael says, exhaling smoke, leaning back in the chair. The smoke snakes like devil horns dissipating in the air. "He wishes."
The plane ride is quick. Before V even settles in she is taken to see Grandfather. The man who has raised her, since her mother was killed, was burned in the autumn fire, since her father vanished. (V is for Vanished, for Vendetta, for Vengeance...)
