Vampires - A New Alternative Lifestyle?
Debra Kelly

The Old Myths

Cover your necks when you see them! These easily detectable Count Dracula look-alikes are bloodthirsty animals. Weaponless fighting is futile - vampires possess awesome strength, trance-inducing eyes, and the ability to morph into bats, chasing you through the air if you try to run.

Have no fear! We can repel them using garlic, crosses, and holy water. We can kill them (for good, this time) with a wooden stake through the heart or by exposing them to sunlight which causes them to burst into flames.

There, I think I've pretty much covered all the mythical stereotypes associated with vampires throughout the ages. (Because that's how long they live, right? They're immortal).

A Planet Halloween Special: The New Vampires

No, that's not true either. Purge your mind of what you think you know about vampires, "real" vampires. (Think whatever you wish about Buffy and her crew). Many ideas and "facts" put forth here are debatable, but do not fool yourselves. There are people living in the world today who consider themselves to be vampires.

They are mysterious and misunderstood people. (Yes, people not creatures). They are not Hollywood movie cliches (well, some aren't) and I will try not to portray them as such. Most of them look like anybody else and just want to be left alone to pursue their lifestyle.

Vampire or Vampyre? (You Say Potato, I Say Potato)

The term "vampire" is read in stories of yore and used by media and movie makers to describe the fictional monsters from Transylvania that we're all frightened of but long to imitate on Halloween. Posers, role players and "social vampires" use this terminology as they try to emulate the traditional undead vampire lifestyle.

Some "real" vampires go by this spelling, but the majority prefers vampyre, which sets them apart from the myths and legends. The variations are interchangeable though, depending on who you are talking with and which term they prefer.

Differences Within The Vampyre Society (We have them, why shouldn't they?)

Blood Vampyres (Sanguinarian - bloodthirsty) have a physical need for blood. Their cravings must be satisfied or they grow weak, feel immense physical pain, followed by dementia and severe illness. The degree of these addictions and afflictions varies from person to person.

Psychic Vampyres (Psy-vamps) get a "high" from taking psychic energy from other people and using it to increase their own energy level. The victim usually feels drained and weakened after this experience. They are also said to be able to read a person's emotions and feelings, almost like ESP.

Social Vampires / Vampire Lifestylers are living vampires who act and dress like the stereotypical undead vampire by sleeping in coffins, and elongating their canines. They do not share the same needs as blood vampyres or have the same abilities as psy-vamps.

Blood Banks

Contrary to popular belief, vampyres do not normally work at, nor do they systematically raid, blood banks late at night. They have "sources" or "donors." These are people who are willing to allow a blood vampyre to feed off of them. Yes, they actually allow someone to suck their blood! Whatever floats your boat.

How Do You Become a Vampyre? (In case anyone's interested)

Most believe that vampyres are born that way, though some do not awaken (discover their true nature) until later in life, usually after puberty or a traumatic experience. Some believe that blood vampyres are the only ones who can "turn" someone to vampirism through sharing their blood.

Others believe that there is no such thing as "turning" or changing someone who wasn't born a vampire into one, so again, it depends on whom you talk to.

What's All the Fuss About? ( If it's so hard, don't be one)

Since most vampyres are certain that their parents are not vampyres and it's just something they were born with, they cannot just become "normal." One vampyre compared it with being gay. You're born that way, you didn't choose it, and you can't change.

This has hopefully educated some people about the alternative lifestyle that vampyres/vampires lead. They are not out preying on unsuspecting victims to sustain themselves. Vampyres tend to only associate with others like them, people who accept their behavior and don't judge them for who they are. They are not out to hurt anyone so we should stop trying to hurt them or disrupt their lives. If you leave them alone, they'll leave you alone and everyone's happy. Can't we all just get along?
