The generosity of strangers witnessed since hurricanes Katrina and Rita now includes viewers of Animal Planet's Little Zoo That Could.
Animal Planet's Alison Risso e-mailed last week to tell of the outpouring of donations since the show's first airing in February. Little Zoo That Could follows the story of the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo and its efforts to save 270 exotic animals and rebuild its zoo after the triple whammies of hurricanes Ivan in 2004, then Katrina and Rita last year. In all three storms, the coastal attraction transported its animals to safety 20 miles inland, to the home of the zoo's director, Patti Hall.
Donations have been coming in from all over the country through postal mail and the zoo's Web site, Hall said. The day after the first show, a man came to the zoo and offered to donate 25 acres of high and dry land to relocate the zoo. During a local Mardi Gras parade, donors were approaching the zoo's float, pressing money into the zoo personnel's hands. The monetary gifts range from a few dollars from kids to hundreds of dollars from adults, Hall said.
