What Friends & Family Can Do

Let the person know you are concerned, that you can and want to help. Suggest that they get professional help from a physician and/or counselor.
Use "I-statements" describing what you observe factually and how you feel about it. Try not to begin statements with "you" and try to avoid statements of opinion.
Learn all you can about the specific disorder.
Organize social activities that do not revolve around food/means. Go to a movie, take a walk, do crafts projects, play with a pet, watch a sporting event, etc.
Model healthy behaviors and self-responsibility.
Be patient. This disorder didn't occur overnight and recovery is generally a long and ongoing process.
Understand that the ultimate responsibility to change lies with the individual. You cannot force a person to ear or to quit overeating. What you can do is offer your support.
