I voted heat because my hair is natural and that would be the culprit I would be most concerned about now. And I would be referring to blow dryers and those hooded hair dryers. Not at all good for my hair.
Braids also make my hair grow and I braid...well actually plait it each night and roll the individual plaits.
Haven't had a relaxer in years. But I do remember my hair would grow for a while with a relaxer and then just begin to thin out and break off. I know some people think it is just about how you take care of your hair. But for me, I always took good care of my hair but eventually just kept recognizing the cycle...growth then damage. I also found the harsh chemicals to be just awful for the health of my scalp. So the chemicals have been gone for years.
Color...I color with henna now and so have no problems with breakage as a result.
Re: What caused your hair loss/breakage?
for me the number one culprit was heat. I used to try to curl my hair and just sit there with the curling iron on. I also used ot blow dry the heck out of my hair with absolutely no added heat protectants and I'd blowdry until my hair was too hot to touch with my own hand! I've cut out the heat so it's started growing again.
secondly, relaxers. I dont plan to give them up just yet so I just have to keep taking better care of my hair, especially before and after relaxers.
Re: What caused your hair loss/breakage?
I would have to say heat Before I started taking care of my hair, it was VERY broken off because I used to use the hot comb just about everyday. I also would go two weeks with out washing it YUK! I know that's nasty But when I found boards like this one I learned better and within a year my hair went from very short ear length collarbone length almost to the top of my shoulder. I never though I could achieve any kind of length but now I know that if you care for our hair well, don't damage, keep it healthy, it will grow!
Re: What caused your hair loss/breakage?
can anyone tell me what it means when people say that they ''heat their hair i don't know what it means pls guys explain to me.thank you
Re: What caused your hair loss/breakage?
I'm pretty sure that "heat their hair" refers to using any kind of direct heat on the hair. Direct heat comes from curling irons, flat irons, blowdryers, pressing combs, and I"m sure there are others. HTH
Re: What caused your hair loss/breakage?
Maybe you should've added All of the above to the list.
Yes, it's sad to say, my unhealthy hair has experienced it all. Extremely tight braids, overheating, overprocessing, coloring, everything. I really don't have a choice, though. I've been wearing braids for about 6 years! I finally tried putting my hair in a wrap, and after a few weeks, the overheating broke it off. I tried wrapping my hair at night and tying it with a scarf, but it only comes off; and when that happens, which happens about every night, I end up having to flat iron it every morning. I was thinking of braiding my own hair individually and taking it down so it could have that crinkly look to it and just wear it like that? I need a style that won't require flat ironing. ANYTHING BUT BRAIDS! I really haven't found a hair solution yet, but I'm working on it *sighs*
Is your hair natural or do u have a perm? If you have a perm, braiding it will definitely break it off. If you have fine natural hair it will do the same.
If you have natural hair, yes a braid out is really good, and two strand twists. If you get some light oil and some good setting lotion you can two strand twist your hair and wear it like that for a good week or so then when it gets a little old pull them apart and have a twist out. It is a very cute style. Sounds like you need to invest in a satin bonnet. Those are really good and they stay on all nigt
If you have a perm ??? I haven't had a perm in a good 7 years so I can't remember what I used to do. I just know you need to moisturize very well. If you started eating healthy and drinking lots of water your hair will respond great to that. So keep it up and maybe incorporate a good multi-vitamin to your regimen. Silica Plus is really good. Good luck
Thanks khivey!
I visited the Black Hair Care Forum and started putting a hair regime together. I'm going to invest in a Satin scarf and pillow case. It's a must. I haven't tried the braid out yet, since next week is Spring Break, I'll start experimenting. Thanks for the helpful tips!
