What defines a "good" Rogue?
I'm trying to debate this. I'm a 65 Rogue, and have always liked to think I'm a good Rogue. But what really does a Rogue need to do to be "good"? I know I position myself well, my right mouse button is held down 99% of the time I'm engaged so I can strafe, and reposition quickly. Does that make me good? I don't ever go AFK without saying, and those times as well are few and far between. I also hit the backstab button within 0.5 seconds of it popping. Does that make me good?
It just seems to me that Rogues, DPS being their primary job, are more defined by their gear than their skills? Perhaps I'm forgetting something, but, what else is there that really sets apart the "good" from the "not so good"?
I mean, classes like Bards and Enchanter to me, those are 2 classes that you can easily tell the difference between a good one, and a average one. And a good one can really make a big impact on the rate of exp, and overall efficiency of a group. But with Rogues, other than AA's and Gear like I've mentioned, is there really that much that separates us besides those 2 things?
Would love to hear comments on these thoughts.

Re: What defines a "good" Rogue?
bad rogues train raids when they get caught by see sos or hit with a trap.
bad rogues dont think to con wanderers or named for see sos, or if they do, dont know how to get around them.
good rogues can get away from see sos mobs that catch them, if theyre having a bad day =p
Re: What defines a "good" Rogue?
To me, a good rogue will prioritize their DPS AA's ahead of everything else. This is why I had Combat Fury 3 and Fury of the Ages 1 before I pursued Shroud of Stealth.
Priorities will vary rogue to rogue. Some rogues prefer Natural Durability, Combat Agility, and the various regeneration AA's, saying it helps them to live longer to do more damage. Some will ignore all other AA's until they hit 63 and Shroud of Stealth.
In the end, it's a judgement call. How well you balance your judgement against the needs of those you group/raid with is the defining mark between the good rogues and the melees with a backstab button.
Re: What defines a "good" Rogue?
CR's usually separate the moderate from the great rogues. Survivability too, when nearly all of the raid wipes, and you se 1 of the 4 rogues in the raid alive, that 1 rogue is probably better than average.

Thats not always true. The one alive rogue was probobly the one that hit escape at the first sign of trouble and went to hide where the other 3 stuck in the thick of battle till the end trying to drop one more mob or use Nimble to give the clerics another 10 seconds to get rez boxes up or camp out.

dps aa's aren't better for a rogue then sos. sos is probably the best single aa skill the rogue class gets.
what aa's they have and how they have spent them says little about how good they are at playing their rogue.

I think the most important thing, for any class really, is paying attention.
It's kinda hard to stand out as exemplary really as a rogue. Most people think you rock if you can find their corpse quickly or have fantastic gear, never mind the fact your actually paying attention and focussing on doing your max potential.
I used to pride myself on being the sole rogue standing at the end of an encounter, or even better, last man standing on a wipe, but no one else seemed to be nearly as impressed as I was

Desire and heart
I agree with others where they say a good rogue is hard to spot if you arent a rogue. If im in a group with another rogue, ill get agro and play with the other rogue to see how the react )
Gear doesnt make a good rogue.
You can tell a rogue who has been playing a rogue for years apart from someones twink in a matter of seconds usually.
A good rogue is more than dps.

when you send the tell to a rogue "i died and have no idea where" and the rogue responds with "that's ok. i know where." he's a good rogue .
seriously though. like others said. it's usually only other rogues that can tell the difference. unless your really just that bad.

here's an example of a bad rogue:
Re: What defines a "good" Rogue?
Rogue is one of, if not THE easiest class to play in EQ.
Being a good Rogue is more about being a good player in a general sense - being able to get around the world, being aware of what's going on in a fight, not inhibiting the roles of others, carrying your own weight. There's very little one can screw up specifically about our class.
Good Rogues excel at being EverQuest players, not at being good Rogues. The only exception I can think of would be on a PvP server.
