I just completeled it this weekend with a 1 Barbarian/26 Cleric Human. I did over 75% of all the side quests (rough estimate)and am wondering how you get to level 40 in this game. Do you have to go through the whole thing solo to do it?

Hmm, I am level 25 right now and at the start of the 3rd chapter(grr the hell thing is so lame, I was looking foward to some deep drow city raid or something.)
I played thru Shadows and did one of the "transition" modules with the same character. I use both henchman.

The hell part is actually very well done, at least I thought so. Give it a try.
Wraine, that sounds about right as the ending point of HotU. There is no way you can get to level 40 in the campaign (without cheating).
It's possible that Bioware may continue to make modules and distribute them online, or you may have to either play a player-made module or on a persistent world if you ever want to see level 40.
Re: What level were you...
Well, I cheated kinda... I went in and loaded a new game and chose the "select a pregenerated character" option. Lo and behold, my lvl 27 cleric is there as an option! So I'm going through it again with the same character. Admittedly, it's not good roleplaying, but it'll be fun exercise in high level character building. We'll see how high I get.

There are numerous 'trainer' mods available, and with the toolset it's trivially easy to make one yourself if you like (pull this level for 10,000 xp or something).
I'm guessing that your random encounters may adjust to your higher level, but all triggered and 'set' encounters will be extremely easy for you.
