I am wondering what types of things you think makes a house a home. I love candles. I love the aroma of candles in the house. I also love houseplants. My house would look dull without them. :-) I am big on toss pillows too. Sara |

I luv candles too. My favorite is buttercream yankee candle housewarmers. I like throw blankets. I have a couple of pretty decorative blankets. I think it makes my chairs look cozy. I like to change my curtains and for the seasons. I am not into houseplants because I kill them all. :-(
mom2tam great topic! I am looking for some ideas. |

Hello. I think color does alot for a house. I like to see walls with color. Accesories do so much too. Whenever I wash my placemats, I think-it sure looks plain in here without them. Groupings of framed photos add a hominess I think too. Gena |

I have always wanted to be more daring with colored walls. I am kind of on the boring side with white walls. I try to dress things up with fabrics and pictures etc, but maybe this Spring I will really liven things up. :-) I am so inspired by magazines, but I get all worried about colors being trendy. Keep the ideas coming. Gosh knows, I can use the tips. hehe Sara |

Hi All, I know what you meen by colors, they DO make the room so much livelier! (sp?). ( I just painted my kitchen a color called Sand Spit!! It is the equivalent of Dockers Khakis, wow what a difference it has made. More liveable and no so sterile looking. I also think you can NOT go wrong with plants, wether they be real, plastics or dried. Nothing adds such warmth and scale! As a flower fanatic, I have lots of dried arrangements, as well as african violets and bromelaids. In a living/family area nothing helps to add warmth to the seating areas like pillows, the pillows make it look inviting and comfy. I have been making my own pillows lately, cotton stuffing and sample material remnants from the local material store. Candles are also great, I know that a lot of you have said that, just thought I would STRESS my love for them as well, all colors, all shapes and sizes. Rich PS- lets keep the decor stuff going, I love to hear what folks out there do. |

Hi. I think furniture placement makes a difference. Ever notice how some people have all of their furniture smack against a wall? Or buy all the same fabric for all the furniture? Or all the same colors? I pull my furniture out a bit and try and make small conversation areas. I know this isn't always possible on a budget or with small spaces. I have diffrent style fabrics in my house that I think liven things up. I have solids, stripes, and florals. My oriental rug ties all the colors together. I don't know. Maybe my house is a decorating disaster. lol I like to read ideas on decorating. Carrie |

I agree with the flowers adding alot to a room/home. I think fresh fruit in a pretty bowl is nice too. I have quite a few beautiful glass bowls and compotes that I like to add fresh fruit and small candies in. I forgot that I even did this because it's such a habit. I also group my collections. Ex: Cobalt glass in different sizes in one area etc. I think it has more impact together than it would if they were placed here and there. I'm going to take a look around here tomorrow and see what I think makes things more "homey". *LOL* On a sidenote, I do like to have things neat and organized, but I feel that a home should have a level of that lived in look as well. Hi All, GOOD QUESTION!!! Why does everyone feel the need to place all the furniture against the wall, leaving HUGE barren spots in the room?? I like the more compact lived in looking rooms. My living/family area is a cornucopia of different eclectic items, I do however try to stick with color schemes, most of the room is done in Burgundy, navy, hunter and gold. I then acquire accent pieces to strengthen the warmth and scale of the room. ( being a huge dog lover and a groomer ) I have several pieces in the room that reflect me on a personal level, I have a love for greyhounds and Borzois ( Russian Wolfhounds ) but since I live in a apartment that does not allow such large breed dogs, I have surrounded myself with them, on a wall behind the loveseat, I have a 30X40 print of a black and white greyhound ( off Ebay 24.00 ) On another wall , I also have a 30X40 Borzoi print (also off Ebay 24.00 ), along with a few cast iron hounds on the sofa table and a few older hound postcards, farmed, to accent and tie it all in! ( it is a visual thing ). And I agree with the fresh fruit to be displayed, in my dining room, I have a large crystal bowl that I keep full of fruits, ( ones that reflect the season. ( Currently filled with palmagranids (sp?) I get comments that range from, where did you get that, to OMG, can you get me one!!! I will soon be traveling to Wonderful Louisiana to do a decorating job, any hints on what you think would be good to add to the project will be wonderful, the woman whom wants the decorating is open to ANY suggestions.
