What would you do if you were Japan?
I'm not interested in starting another why are we there thread. I'm just curious how you guys think a country should handle this sort of thing. I'm afraid we are going to see more of it.
Re: What would you do if you were Japan?
sure sure, I mean aside from that. Obviously. sheeesh.
I suppose we've had enough of this sort of topic around here lately. :P I was just sorta surprised. Leave or we'll burn them and feed them to the troops? Forget I posted this. Although I'm sure someone was bound to.

Re: What would you do if you were Japan?
Well giving in sets a really really bad example. It gives the message that "Ok, we're dead serious about our policies so long as you don't threaten to do anything very bad to our people". Basically this is the same as every other damned hostage situation except these guys are threatening very specific gruesome deaths.
Why shouldn't they keep doing it? Shoot some people, and it's same old same old. Drag them out of cars, kill and mutilate them in front of cameras and then display their bodyparts and you get loads of attention. Capture hostages and threaten generic death and well, that's been done to death. Threaten to kill them in specific horrible painful way, get the attention. That's sort of the point to terroism, shock and scare people into giving you what you want.
Now I'm not necessarily for either the war or the occupation, but just the thought of capitulating to threats like that really ruffles my feathers. If one group of extremists knows another group got what they wanted that way how long before every nutjob with an agenda - not just in Iraq - figures it's the best way to get things done? Like all the hostages in Columbia, the solution favored seems to be to pay. So if they get what they want what possible incentive is there for the hostage takers to stop taking hostages? It's a @#%$ deal for the hostages, it's a @#%$ deal for the families and friends of hostages and it's a @#%$ deal for morale. But giving hostage takers what they want only leads to more hostages taken in the long run.

They could use the Kaiser Sose method of dealing with a hostage situation.
Kill the hostages. Then kill the hostage-takers. Then kill the parents, siblings, children, uncles and cousins of the hostage-takers. That should be a pretty good deterrent.
Re: What would you do if you were Japan?
This is clearly the optimal time to plant microchips with GPS markers into all citizens. Then, when someone takes a hostage like that, we'll know exactly where to drop the half-ton laser guided bomb.
Re: What would you do if you were Japan?
I know, if they were going to come up with a threat they should have called up Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf (Ex-Iraqi Minister of Information) and got his advice.
He could have provided them with great ones, such as, "God will roast their stomachs in hell at the hands of Iraqis."
Or perhaps, "They will be burnt. We are going to tackle them."
Clearly, more frightening words have never been spoken.

weakness shouldn't be shown , if you show weakness its your end , kiddnaping would never stop
back during the 1980's , 3 kuwait airplanes were kidnaped to demand that kuwait realse some terroiest , kuwait never gave up , there would be loss , but on the long run it would stop
or you could be a country that doesn't care , like how many iraqi citizin was kidnaped for political reaosn during saddam days to demand something from his goverment ?
Re: What would you do if you were Japan?
Or you could handle it like the British SAS.
They don't allow it to be televised until it's taken care of and when they board the highjacked plane, they do whatever it takes to handle the problem.
Hostages-smostages. Kill em all.

Re: What would you do if you were Japan?
Thats how Russian always handled it (and mostly still does). No negotiations. Hardest part is going to be getting good intel on location with all the other stuff going on.

Woah. I've been outta the loop with out of town company for the past few days and not able to watch the news/internet. I didn't know the gravety of the situation when I made my first post. As cool as giant robots are, they aren't applicable in this situation.
Re: What would you do if you were Japan?
I wasn't able to read the article until just now, was getting an error before.
Yea, that's @#%$ and Japan should certainly not back down. That being said however, I thought that Japan didn't generally dispatch troops and get involved militarily since WWII?

Re: What would you do if you were Japan?
Gnmish, they didn't. In fact they had to rework their constitution (I think) to enable them to do this at all.
So the question that we are asking with this thread is, "What Would Japan Do"?
