Wizardry
The domain of the Gods is encompassed by five of the six elements (Light, Water, Air, Earth and Fire). The sixth element, Darkness, is the domain of Chaos. For Wizards all six elements are compelled to do one's bidding, rather than enticed to do it at the whim of a God. It is a life-long pursuit, and is relatively new among the mortal races of the world.
Wizardry is widely viewed as an unnatural and arrogant pursuit, particularly by those uneducated and superstitious folk of Moagara. Within the Empire it has been absorbed into the Lunar cult but remains an oddity. On the frontier, however, such open denial of divine power is considered foolhardy at best, and blasphemous at worst.
The practice of Wizardry originated in the Lunar Empire and came to Moagara with the occupation. The first of the Moagari to study magic under Imperial scholars was the cunning, but minor, chieftain Wulfwaru. Seeking an edge in the constant infighting between the tribes of the southern mountains, Wulfwaru found he had a natural aptitude for Wizardry and excelled at its pursuit. After years of dedicated study he quickly seized control of the local tribes and even challenged the authority of the Legions.
Open conflict was averted by shrewd diplomacy on the part of Kasos, the Imperial magistrate of Thasvara. He managed to lure Wulfwaru out of the mountains by offering him access to some of the Empire's most precious manuscripts, many dealing with hitherto unknown rituals and incantations. For a man thirsty for knowledge in a land with no tradition of arcane research, it was a worthy trade.
Wulfwaru turned away from his barbarous ways and served as a powerful enemy of Chaos all across Moagara. He took several students, and his heroic deeds are one of the few reasons wizards are tolerated at all among the Moagari. In time, Wulfwaru appeared less and less, finally disappearing altogether several years before the Legions sailed back to the Empire. When the forces of Chaos began their destructive rampage, many called out to Wulfwaru, wherever he may have been, to come to their aid. Yet, he did not appear.
Wizards are very rare in Moagara, and often conceal their abilities from the common folk. There are perhaps five or six Master Wizards in the entire region and they are secretive, taking students from the populace for their own inscrutible reasons.
