Women were active during the Prophet. What happened?
The Prophet himself set a good example in his treatment of women. He exhorted his followers to treat women kindly. He never struck a woman or a slave and even helped his wives with the household chores. He encouraged the Muslims to learn from Ayesha. In the early days of Islam, there were many examples of women who played a prominent role in society. There are examples of women who worked to earn their living, such as Asma, the daughter of Abu Bakr, women who fought alongside their men folk in battle, women who participated in business and government office, such as Shifa bint Abdullah who was appointed by Caliph Omar as the inspector of markets at Medina. So, what happened?

easy response..
ok.. this might sound like generalizing.. but i believe- that especially in the subcontinent-- (hindu) culture and submissive mentality imbued by the "foriegn masters" has merged with islam .. creating this weird conglomeration of beliefs and practices...... whereby men are assigned certain roles - making them egoistic and uncompromising... believing that it is beneath them to help out their wives-- coz housework is a woman's job!
