Wren the Lace Monitor
Wren the Lace Monitor

On 29 June 2006, a member of the public brought Wren the Lace Monitor into the Hospital from Maleny. Unfortunately for Wren the gentleman had accidentally chainsawed through Wren's leg whilst cutting up a dead log; poor Wren's back leg was hanging by a thread of skin. Dr Amber quickly anaesthetised him and started to perform surgery to amputate his leg in order to save his life. Lace Monitors seem to get along well in the wild with only one back leg; if this had been a front leg Wren's prognosis may not have been as good.

Wren recovered from surgery and is doing extremely well. He is already climbing branches in his enclosure and is very feisty if we disturb him. Once he is off his medication he will go to a carer for further rehabilitation.

Wren's prospect for release is very good. Although, we can avoid having this happen to any of our other precious wildlife by checking all dead logs before cutting them up. One of the ways to do this is by pushing a hose pipe through to the other end and hopefully anything that has resided in there will scurry out the other side, out of harm's way.
