Name: Philip Lane (Phil)
Contacts: pnlrogue1@hotmail.com
Age: 20
Code: Rita Skeeter
IC
Name: Yuki Laren
Nickname(s): Yook, ‘Ki
DOB: 03/21/1980
Blood: Muggle-Born
Previous School/House: Meiyo Gakko, Kyoto, Japan (Lit: Honour School)
Subject To Teach: Grounds Keeper
Qualifications: He spent a few years touring the Japanese countryside keeping tabs on numerous ancient castles and temples and helping to control several of the local magical creatures. He is currently learning transfiguration/attempting to become an animagus to perhaps teach Transfiguration as well.
Exam Results: O's in Defence Against the Dark Arts, English, Herbology and Care Of Magical Creatures, E's in Transfiguration, Astronomy and Potions, A in History Of Magic in his Senmonka's (“Expert's” – the Japanese N.E.W.T.s).
Physical Appearance: He is tall (about 5’10”), well-built (though he doesn’t have the appearance of a gym-user) and has a youthful face with a medium nose, soft jaw line and the tired look of someone who’s seen things someone his age shouldn’t have seen. He has medium-length, brown hair which always appears wind-swept, thanks to a combination of tree-sap and a quick blast of magical wind in the morning. He has deep, blue eyes and strong hands. He always seems to have 1 day old stubble.
He always walks with the confidence of someone who knows that nothing can surprise him and nothing can harm him: the appearance of someone who knows how to fight and has used his abilities in the past. He likes to wear a long coat made of the hide of some unidentified beast, of which he keeps several in different colours to suit the current weather (though his most common and favourite is black). He tends to wear either a black or white, thick, baggy martial arts suit, though possesses a smart suit for more formal occasions (though even this is usually worn under one of his long coats).
Personality: He is a friendly, outgoing person who is always approachable, even when extremely busy. He enjoys nothing more than a good challenge, with the exception of pushing himself to the extent of his abilities and then making sure that those boundaries are further away next time he has to push himself that hard.
He is prone to sudden, inexplicable bouts of what can only be described as “weirdness” where he becomes very inward and reflective and seems to talk from some inner place. When like this, he becomes some sort of fountain of wisdom. No-one (least of all him) knows where or when this started or why he slips in to it sometimes but not others – sometimes, when having a deep discussion, he’ll just go quiet and listen then say something incredibly deep and insightful. Some have suggested it may be the spirits of one of the temples he helped repair giving him access to some deep, inner wisdom, though it’s more likely that he’s just strange like that.
As a wannabe Samurai, he will always help those in distress and would gladly risk his life in defence of those who need him, no matter what. So far, his skill and determination have proven powerful enough to protect him from harm, but he has been known to jump in front dragons and lead them off to protect people and even he admits that it’s only a matter of time before he takes too-big-a-risk…
If a death-eater were to jump out at him and try to curse him, they would have a hard time of it. He has trained his reflexes and is lightning-fast as a result. He can cast silently with just about any spell and has a knack for disappearing in plain view, only for spells to start coming from all sides at once, though no-one has yet been able to work out how he does this - some special spell, or just extreme speed. This is, in reality, excellent use of misdirection (to cover his disappearance) and apparation. He is, by no means, very accurate with the spells he fires while doing this, but his natural talent for apparation has saved him from tough scrapes before and if no counter can be found for this trick, it’s only a matter of time before he hits his target. He has never had to use this against people before, only creatures that are mostly larger than human size.
Honour is very important to him and challenging his honour is a sure-fire way to anger him immensely – anger him enough that he will probably duel you immediately and without more than a second’s warning.
He takes great pride in his work and has only once failed to achieve his goals. Not achieving what he was expecting can make him extremely angry. He isn’t a perfectionist as such – things don’t have to be perfect – but he wants things to be the way he wants them to be.
He can seem to loose focus at times, but this is only because he allows his attention to wander to make sure nothing is going on around him – a trait that, while annoying at times, has saved his life.
The only thing that he fears is failing to protect someone, a fear that has caused him great pain, twice – a fear that led him to England when two people he cared for were killed and he was unable to save them. He was hoping that he could heal the wound in his soul and his honour by helping in the coming war. A hole caused by his parents’ death when they came to see one of the ancient castles he was helping restore and they fell through a broken floor board. This does not, however, mean that he is fearless – he is human, after all – only that he has overcome everything else that has frightened him. He is, naturally, scared of dragons, scared of dieing and many other things that scare us all, the difference is that he overcomes these fears as otherwise, he would not be able to protect the people who need him. As he is afraid of these things, it is possible for these things to frighten him and for him to fail to overcome his fear (while he would fight one dragon, he would most likely run from two and would probably apparate back to Japan if four jumped out at him). He will also, therefore, jump at things that surprise him, but will recover from these frights very quickly and would return to face the four dragons if there were need for him to do so, though he would take a few moments for himself to recover if no-one were in danger.
History: His parents are both British teachers who moved to Japan to teach English as a foreign language. He was born there and given a Japanese Christian-name (which translates to “Courage”). After graduating from the Japanese Wizarding School near Kyoto, he spent some time touring the old parts of the country where he helped maintain several ancient castles and temples and helped control some of the local magical wildlife. He eventually decided to go to England when rumours of a new magical war reached him – after all, what else could an aspiring student of the samurai arts do but try to help those who needed his protection, especially when he had something to prove to himself about his abilities and his character. His parents’ death shook him and he still hasn’t fully gotten over it, as it was only a short time ago.
The Japanese wizards teach a peculiar style of magic casting which allows certain offensive spells to be cast using steel, rather than wood, allowing them to cast a limited number of spells using their swords, though they are also capable of using wands which they also use as physical weapons (known as Tanjo’s) and can also cast spells using staffs, though this is also rather limited. He is an aspiring warrior and so knows all of these to a fair degree, though favours his katana which he keeps locked away and hidden when not needed (which is, thankfully, rare), favouring instead his Tanjo-wand for everyday use.
He achieved O's in Defence Against the Dark Arts, English, Herbology and Care Of Magical Creatures, with E's in Transfiguration, Astronomy and Potions and an A in History Of Magic (which resulted in him spending 6 of the months he spent travelling attempting to find and duel the person who marked his paper) in his Senmonka's (Expert's – the Japanese N.E.W.T.s). He takes great pride in his work and always achieves what he wants (except in History).
His school life was fairly lonely - he spent most of his time perfecting himself in some way or other, so had few friends and most of them were people who he protected or trained with. In either case, they were generally a year or two younger than him. This always worried his parents, but they preferred to avoid telling him things he wouldn't like as they were very uncomfortable of his magic - they didn't hate or despise or fear it or him, they just found it hard to understand it. His parents spent his whole life teaching him English as a foreign language (to a better standard than many of those in England these days...).
Roleplay Sample: Walking through the gates of Hogwarts, he couldn’t help but think to himself there is no style to these European castles… no flare… only cold, hard stone. He watched a few of the students out of the corner of his eye. They were hiding their stares at his odd, long, coat with dragon-scale jacket and smart shirt and tie hidden underneath.
As he approached the main entrance, he stopped and looked around the grounds, taking the lake, the forest and the lawn in one glance but lingering on the quidditch pitch. “Perhaps I shall get some practice in if I am accepted” he mumbled in his soft, Japanese accent. Casting one, final, intense look at the great ripples visible in the middle of the lake, he turned sharply, sending his coat whirling round him in an impressive flourish which surprised the prefect that was approaching him from behind.
After recovering his wits, the young man asked if the stranger needed any help and was more than happy to help lead this strange visitor to the headmistress’ office
