basics of magick
Basics of Magick
A Witch does not just perform Magick by casting intricate spells and
chanting rhymes. We cast spells everyday, all day. I cast around a
hundred spells a day. We drive over a dangerous bridge, I cast a spell
of protection around my family and our car. A storm rises and there are
reports of tornadoes, I cast a spell of protection around our house.
Someone gets sick, I cast a spell to dispel the negativity in him or
her. I pick a piece of fruit and cast a spell to heal the wound I made
on the plant. I water my garden and cast a spell so the food will grow.
I go to bed at night and cast spells on everyone to have sweet dreams.
These spells are not done by chants and rituals (though some spells
are). I simply lower my brain waves and use visualization to cast these
spells. Spells and Magick are an everyday part of a Witch's life. Magick
in its basic most general definition is using your will to direct energy
for a specific purpose. This definition probably didn't answer any
questions, but Magick is difficult to define. The difficulty arises in
that Magick is different for everyone. No two people, no matter how much
they think alike, practices Magick in the same way. Your talents are not
the same as my talents. No two people view the world the same. No two
people see symbols the same.
Then why bother to explain Magick if you're not going to view it as I
do? In explaining how I do it, you may be able to find out how you can
do it. But, remember that this is how I view and practice Magick. You
must find within yourself what is right for you. I view Magick as using
my mind to direct natural energies to create change. In a basic summary
of how I cast a spell: I gather my tools and spell components. I ground,
center, shield and go into a trance or alpha state. Through grounding, I
gather energy, mainly from the earth since that is what I do best. I
direct this energy towards the end or goal of my spell using
visualization and manipulation of my tools and components. I finish by
thanking the Earth for using Her power, reground out any excess energy
and come back into a normal mental state. I repeat this process several
times for each spell--about once a day or once a week, since many of my
spells take months to complete (I don't usually perform elaborate spells
for the little stuff when prayers or affirmations work just as well)
Ground, Shield, Center and Meditate
Meditating, entering an Alpha, Magickal or psychic state of mind, going
into a trance all refer to the same state. It is allowing yourself to
fall into that frame of mind that allows you to do Magick. Grounding
helps reconnect me with the world around me on a Magickal level. Through
grounding I can draw in and channel energy and not be afraid to overload
myself. This energy I direct into my spells. Centering is a term for
being focused. When casting a spell, it is important to focus on that
task and not to think about extraneous things. Shield puts up a
protective barrier in the same way a Circle is used in a ritual.
Gathering and Directing the Energy and Visualizing the Spell
Everyone will gather energy a different way. Since I'm more in tune with
the Earth side of myself, I gather energy by grounding as a tree. After
I gather the energy, I visualize it going through my body and out my
fingertips, which are pointed at the spell components. Also I visualize
what I want the spell to do. Finishing the Spell I finish each session
by releasing the excess energy, imagining it going back into the Earth
and thanking Her for borrowing it. Remember nothing is created nor
destroyed, it will all eventually go back to her.
What Witches Shouldn't Do with Magick
As with everything else, there are things that Wiccans should not do
with their Magick, not because of bad repercussions (though there are
some), but because they are not right and are against our basic law: "If
it harms none, do what ye will." If you can't decide whether to do a
spell, ask yourself, "Will it harm anyone or anything?" If it will not,
do it with a clear conscience; if it will, save yourself the karma and
don't do it. Performing evil acts with your Magick does however buy you
a good bit of karma that you carry with you from life to life. It is our
good judgement that keeps us from performing evil acts. When it comes to
rules, there will always be exceptions. In cases of indecision, always
refer back to the law: "If it harms none, do what ye will."
Do not use Magick to hurt anything, even if you feel justified. If
someone is casting hurtful Magick towards you, use a mirror shield to
bounce the harmful back.
Don't bind someone. What if you are wrong about the person you want to
bind? What if someone is wrong about you and binds you? A good shield is
still the best defence.
Taking away someone's freedom of choice hurts him or her. Don't use
coercive spells. Don't try to make someone "do" anything.
Casting a spell on a person (even if it's for their good) is taking away
their freedom of choice. They may believe it's evil, and you wouldn't
want them converting you against your will.
"Be careful of what you wish for, you may get it." Really consider your
wants before casting a spell. The phrase "That which is best for me" is
better than casting for a specific thing, getting it, realizing you
didn't want it and having missed out on what was best for you.
Don't shed blood in ritual, not yours, someone else's or something
else's. Whether or not it increases your power, it's just bad.
Don't use drugs in ritual or Magick. They don't help you. You need your
full mental capabilities in order to raise and direct energy. Drugs only
slow you down.
