I have yet to try a PW server, so if you find one you like let me know where so I can check it out.
The only user made module I've played through so far is 'The Nether Scrolls' by Papermonk. It won a contest that Bioware put together to reward the best user made module that bridged the gap between SoU and HotU. It had some really good parts, but it was extremely linear which might bother a lot of people. Seemed to give me a bit too much gold and stuff too (and free bags of holding). The troll monk henchman was interesting to have along though.
I've heard the 'Witches Wake' is very good, but I haven't tried it yet.

Re: best modules and persistent world servers?
Well, with the prestige classes from the two expansions there are lots of combinations you can take that are ridiculously effective. I know certain weapon master builds with devastating critical can tear through most anything. (WMs have an ability that makes criticals more common, and devastating critical makes enemies have to make a fortitude save or die on a critical hit). I think most any class is capable of going through the OCs, but some will definately have it easier than others. Starting out is tough on wizards, sorcerors, and monks but they all get very effective eventually. I haven't played a pure rogue yet but I imagine a lot of the boss mobs would be tough (all undead and a lot of bosses are immune to sneak attacks). I went through the NWN OC with a paladin/Champion of Torm who never had much of a problem except against a few casters early on. I started a sorceror in SoU who absolutely SUCKED at first but by the end was very powerful.
There are a lot of interesting prestige classes in the expansions. If I remember correctly, they add: shifter (shapeshifter), dwarven defender (super tank), assassin (ok, but not as cool as they sound), blackguard (bad paladin), arcane archer, weapon master, palemaster (weak), red dragon disciple (good for bards, sucks for sorcerors despite what the book says), harper scout (by far the most pointless worthless class), Shadowdancer, and Champion of Torm (sort of like a paladin/fighter hybrid). I'm probably missing one or two.
It's tough to pick a 'best' one because most can be very effective in the right combination. For example, taking one level of shadowdancer is enough to allow a rogue to 'hide in plain sight' and keep sneak attacking somebody over and over.
Re: best modules and persistent world servers?
So I get to lvl 10 with a prestige, get an off class to 10 as well, then I can go epic? prestige can't level past 10 until total level is 20?
Re: best modules and persistent world servers?
I don't believe there are any prestige classes you can take at first, so you couldn't take 10 levels of a prestige class without having taken at least a few levels of another class.
11th level is considered an epic level for a prestige class. You can't gain any epic levels until your character level (sum of all your class levels) is 20.
So, say I wanted to make a shifter. Only druids can become shifters and only after they get their first wildshape ability (to turn into animals) at level 5. If I level at 5, assuming I have the right prereqs, I can take a level in either shifter or druid. For example I could take 5 levels of druid and 10 levels of shifter, but then I couldn't take anymore shifter levels until my total character level is 20 (5 non-shifter class levels later). I could be a 1 monk/9 druid/ 10 shifter or 5 druid/5 fighter/10 shifter or whatever really.
The order is not important for this requirement (but the order you take them in CAN be important for the number of attacks you have because they only increase from character level 1 to character level 20, so you would get more of an advantage from taking a fighter class early on than later on).
Think of prestige classes as extensions of base classes rather than entire classes in and of themselves.
Was there a class in particular you were interested in?
Also, are you just playing the single player campaigns? The first NWN OC starts you at level 1 and takes your character to around 14-16 level, the SoU expansion starts you over again at level 1 and takes you to around level 12, and the HotU expansion starts you at level 15 (your character is the same one who saved the world in the SoU expansion, but you can still make a brand new different level 15 for it if you want) and goes to around level 25 (or so I've heard, haven't finished it yet).
In other words, there's really no use worry about really high levels if you are only interested in playing the original campaigns.

Re: best modules and persistent world servers?
There really arent any best classes for the expansions, outside of a few meelee orientations that maximise your damage output.
For the casters basically the pale master, and red dragon desciple help your melee abilities, and survival rate when at melee range. Most people agree that your still better off not multiclassing a sorceror due to the spells etc. You can still find some intersting combos though.
Ive been playing off and on with a half-ogre sorceror/RDD/CoT who has weapon focus in scythe, and overwhelming criticals. By selecting more defensive oriented spells,i can augument his melee ability, and give him some defense.
Unless your roleplaying its not so much a matter of selecting a class combo,vs selecting alot of abilities you want.
My first time through,i was a 14 rogue/13 shadowdancer, who was chaotic evil. was fun to play the evil side through.
At any rate, there are alot of class combos that are intersting
a few that sound intersting
Dwarf barbarian/dwarven defender
human monk/CoT
Half-ogre monk/sorc/pale master
Halfing rogue/blackguard/weaponmaster
any fighter/weaponmaster
elf or halfling ranger/arcane archer
monk/weaponmaster -requires Kama's

Re: best modules and persistent world servers?
Make your own module and have an NPC that gives out 100,000 exp or whatever you want.
Experiment with the different class combinations. I made a weaponmaster and was critting for 170 ish with just a great axe.

Re: best modules and persistent world servers?
Of the persistant worlds I've played, Orb of Arbrogation, Narfell, and one more (whose name I've forgotten) have kept me coming back.
Orb is lots of fun because it has a small playerbase and everyone roleplays. The world is also very changable and player-inspired content is often added.
But I don't like the worlds where everyone is a bad azz, so Narfell fits the bill. It has a large playerbase and role playing is required to advance beyond level 10, but I have found some people who dont stick to roleplay consistantly. The thing I like about it other than having the powergamers weeded out is the fact that you can be what you want to be with absolutely no pressure to have to level consistantly. I play a begger, not a dagger-wielding fool just because I have to do combat to progress. The death penalty is very stiff in Narfell, though. If you die, you get a second chance once. After that, you pretty much have to have a high level cleric come across your corpse in the wielderness, or have a particularly loyal friend carry it to a temple.
There is one more server that I started to play on, but I can't remember the name of it for the life of me. I've only played on it briefly, but it is FULL of people (more than 60 player at all times) and the custom tilesets are beautiful. I loggeed in thinking that I was going to end up in yet another lame PW, but was surprised to see how HUGE the world was. You don't start in a newbie zone. It's more like a newbie continent. I'll post the name once I get home.
Edit ~ I *think* that the name of the PW I forgot is City of Arabel.Edited by: Bladesake at: 1/23/04 8:57 pm
It spans 2 servers, with a large base of players. It is mainly a low magic/xp/gold server, high on RP. The world is under constant modification by a small dev team. Things arent always quick to be completed, but they do get changed. My biggest complain right now is that they are changing the merchants, & currently all ahve the same conversation. Its alot of fun there, DMs give quests to players who catch their eye (with good RP), & they also do ambience (mixing up spawns, adding spawns, etc) so it keeps you on your toes. You dont always see the DMs, but they are there.
Alot of modules out there, any more suggestions? so many listed I chose a few random top 10. Nice section of "crossover" mods but I am barely scratching the surface on HoTU.
I don't want to jump into a server I like the feel of SP until I get back in the flow of the game.
Re: ...
I tried out Exaria and City of Abarel. I prefer the city.
I logged into Exaria and within 2 minutes was killed by a flying cow hitting me for extreme damage in the "Starting Zone" and then ressurected by a geletinus cube.
I figured it may have been a fluke and went to the city sewers to fight some rats.
Find out the rats are actually dire rats and get my behind handed to me after fireing one arrow.
The city however can also be consitered difficult because All I have seen to fight is normal rats and some beetles so far. However I havent left the city yet, been doing NPC quests completely so far.
Im playing a Bard of Sharess on that one however so its not like im a warmonger. I have found a LOT more RP going on in the City of Abarel however, ive been having more fun with that one than many of the others.
When I want action I join some of my friends in other servers. Just joined up to Neversummer but the lag was to nasty to play last night so I figured id just try again tonight, their advertisement of Neversummer 4 has gotten my attention and Ill probably stick around once it comes out.
Re: ...
Been playing City of Arabel a bit latey. Its a nice mod with a lot of rping and a very nice city. I like rping asmuch as the next guy and i find it weeds out alot of the annoying players. But I spent 5 hours playing and im still lvl 1. While im sureounded by red and purple cons. Killing gobs for 1 exp gets old pretty quick. But maybe im missing something....right? I hope I am. I dont wanna be lvl 30+ or anything but something a lil higher than 1 and 2.
