dueling a ranger
A few questions about dueling a ranger:
1) Is jousting the only option when dueling a 15 slot buffed ranger (obviously its nearly impossible to dispell all of his buffs including damage shields)?
2) If so, how do you deal with their archery?
3) I have about 190 MR and was still snared and rooted, is this common?

Also, if you are dueling in an area where there are NPCs, take cover behind them. Arrows are bolt type projectiles. Even if the ranger has you targeted and happens to hit an innocent by-stander, the NPC will aggro. Wayfarer camps are full of high level spell casters just waiting for an excuse to beat up rangers.

adventure camp mobs, the level 65 ones will not argo you, you cannot attack them. you will have to know what you are doing and be pretty well equipped to be a fairly decent PvP ranger

I assure you, if the ranger happens to plug one while shooting at you she's in for a world of hurt. Just because you can't intentionally attack them doesn't mean you can't make someone else accidently do it.
Re: dueling a ranger
Not really, if you shoot them because of LoS, they ignore you. they have uber regen though.
If a rogue walled against me, I would just go toe to toe, and watch him die much faster. 65 rangers self buff has a 40 pt DS that lasts for 3 hours, and if they have any right clicks like coldain ring, etc. it's gonna hurt alot more.
The true power of not testing your patches. (see sig)
*P.S. Yes, "plentiful" is spelled wrong :(, it's a sig I made years ago, somewhat special to me, so I didn't fix it*
Re: dueling a ranger
Wall yourself and observe how fast (s)he's moving. For a rogue, even ground as far as movement is key in any duel, melee, caster, or hybrid. If you know what you're doing, you can dart forward just before (s)he hits melee range and use the old 'BS through' as you cross paths. Rinse, repeat. Yes, you want to kill the ranger as quickly as possible, but you also want to do it in the least amount of hits as possible. Realistically, though, an intelligent (read: patient) ranger would let you stay walled, and still go at it with arrows if nukes and dots won't work. You'll run out of ranged combat items before (s)he will, and eventually, you will die.
If you've got HP, close-combat know-how, and key configuration that allows you to stay a step ahead of which way he's turned, the DS doesn't matter, and duelist will win it for you. You've really got to be really good at head games and directing your opponent, though, or you'll be plagued by the "you are unable to see your target" or however that message goes. If your target's PR allows, Blind III is fun. "Smart" ones hit with it will turn in circles, in which case you know where they will be when your BS button is up.

Re: dueling a ranger
use a paralyzing poison...without their bow they are nothing....because if you can get to catch up to them they are toast....otherwise just hope you got good resists and DONT stand still or bow will do double dmg...unless ur rooted
Most PvP oriented rangers have the 100k horse at the very least. They know that speed is extremely important for any range oriented PvP combat.
Most rogues don't have a horse and if you get one you can't use backstab on it anyways so you can't really backstab joust a horsed ranger.
If you absolutely must fight a ranger you need to do it indoors or in a zone that doesn't allow horses. You want as small a space in possible and ample walls around you. A tendonslicer would be grand, proc snare and then hope duelist kills them before their 80+ point damage shield and huge 2hs does.
When you pop duelist there is about a 99% probability the ranger will weaponshield and dispell the snare off of himself. If that is the case you must be extremely good at finding the backside while duelist is up. It really is your only chance, this is basically the same strategy versus bards so if you can beat a bard indoors you can beat a ranger.
Re: dueling a ranger
Speaking of beating a bard indoors, there is a great post over on the crucible about a shaman luring a bard into one of the igloos in Iceclad and then using rabid bear form to block the bard from getting back out. I doubt any real PvP bard would fall for that, but its still a funny read.

hah, that is completely wrong.
Rangers have the same hp table as rogues, but our own extra 600ish hp worth of buffs. along with a 50+ pt dmg shield for most rangers. I never use my bow against rogues.
Sticking to me is only going to get you killed faster.
Re: dueling a ranger
At the higher end of PvP, our snare poisons are by no means something you can count on. They're a nice kick, and if it sticks for an unnatural length you might be in for a ride... but I'd never count on them. If they aren't flat out resisted, I just hope they last long enough for me to get an actual Tendonslice in.
Against a ranger, if you can't figure out how to get by the ~80'ish point damage shield they can get with their own buffs and shaman potions, you're already in a world of hurt. I'll post a longer thing later about things you CAN do... but realize this isn't a fighting chance against someone taking equal precautions or with a few tricks up their sleeve as well.
I don't know how to break this to you, but rogues aren't a great 'dueling' class. We have an AWESOME role in PvP, but it's not straight up fights against other classes.. it's not really something you can see on a 'Blue' server since everyone always sees you coming with a /Duel.

Re: dueling a ranger
like it has been said before, if you start the fight (him fully buffed and ready) you are dead. save yourself the pain and only attack him if hes sitting down and regaining hp. backstab him..loot..walk away.
Re: dueling a ranger
Walling yourself will not work with the new graphics engine.
Keep yourself between other pcs/npcs if possible (Btw the wayfarer camp npcs wont aggro, I've hit them before with arrows).
Dispell, dispell, dispell. As much as you can. The DS will kill you otherwise. Coldain Ring + PoTW+Bramblecoat is 48 pts - add shaman potions and its much higher. Get a ds on yourself if you can (rings/potions).
Try to land blind - anything that will give you shots at the rangers back.
190 MR I'm surprised they can snare/root you. Messing around in the arenas I have little luck landing those spells typically.
Remember if you pop duelist facing him expect weaponshield.
