expansions-comparision?
Finished NWN, ready for expansion. I have $30 Best Buy gift card, but my two BB stores don't seem to want to sell the Shadows expansion anymore.
So question is, can I go straight to Hordes expansion; and should I go straight to Hordes, or go to another store and plunk down money for Shadows.

I'd also recommend getting Shadows of Undrentide first. That gives you a little bit more practice with the prestige classes and new 'henchmen' features the game developed without suddenly throwing you into having 40 levels of experience to gain with these new classes. Bit slower progression that way to get you 'hooked', in my opinion.
I myself loved the story in Hordes of the Underdark more, but found I enjoyed the gameplay of Shadows of Undrentide a little bit more; more places to go and no having to contend with level 20 monsters right off the get-go like Hordes does.
Re: expansions-comparision?
SoU started out slow and I thought I wasn't going to like it (go get 4 missing things, blah) but I ended up very much enjoying it. I personally got all of the expansions before even finishing the first campaign because I was enjoying myself in the game AND in the builder enough that I knew it would be worth it. If you are interested in the prestige classes and new spells and feats, once you buy HotU you are able to use them in any of the OCs.
Personally in the past month or so I've played through the NWN OC with a paladin/Champion of Torm (HotU prestige class) and then played a pure sorceror through SoU and the contest winning 'bridge' module between SoU and HotU (SoU ends with your character roughly around level 10-12 and HotU expects a level 15 or so character). My sorceror had a very difficult time through the first few hours of SoU but it picked up a lot later on (and he was dominating by the end).
Now I want to start up HotU but I am debating what class I should use. I think I'm going to continue my sorceror, make a fighter/dwarven defender, make a druid/shifter, or try a pure rogue. The Shifter seems like a lot of fun, but it is an incredibly confusing class (certain forms merge different equipment with them, they all have their own stats and bonuses/weaknesses, apparently some additional multiclassing for AC, BAB, and number of attacks is necessary, etc).
HotU assumes you were the hero from SoU, so I'd go SoU, then HotU based on that alone.
SoU and NWN OC happen during the same time period, so it isn't like your OC character is 'recognized' by HotU for saving peeps from Aribeth/disease, evil dude or the Old Ones.
Re: expansion
Wow, the HotU expansion is good. I just know I'm going to be replaying this once I'm through.

Re: expansion
The Story in HotU is much better then SoU,but the extra 20 levels gives you alot of power, and makes the game less of a challange at times.
Id recommend HoTU in the end though,i think its a better overall module then SoU was.
Re: expansion
Yeah so far HotU is a breeze with my pure sorceror that I've played since SoU. Hardest part of my character's life so far was the first chapter of SoU (level 1 mages SUCK).

*spoilers*
HotU is by far the best expansion. The story, the incredible scripting, it's all just mind-blowing to see how far the original NWN is coming.
Just take for instance the war scene. I mean come on, how much freaking cooler can you get? Wave after wave of duegar and drow, battling against golems and rebels...or having your own golem pet for that matter.
The whole Eye thing that you have to use to follow that path in Hell, that was pretty badass. Or the minigame with the hand. Or the whole True Name thing. Or...or...or...or...
The only that really pissed me off was Mephistophiles. How much lamer can you get than being a sorcerer and having the end boss be practically magic immune =/
Re: .
Just finished it tonight. Awesome. I know I'm going to play through this again, there is just too much extra stuff to do and too many things I missed. It's going to be a ton of fun just putting this stuff in the editor to see how they did it. Just amazing.
**Spoilers**
I'll be interested to try this out with a non-sorceror. The game was pretty easy (maximised IGMS kills most bosses before the fight even starts) but from what I remember it seems being a rogue would be very difficult. I'm also interested in the shifter class which seems like it would be tricky.
As for big M, I just used the black blade of disaster spell with greater sanctuary so he couldn't hurt me and let Valen and Aribeth beat him to death. I played the medic role by handing 'heal' potions to whomever needed it but otherwise didn't do much.
I played a pure rogue through it all and by the time I got to the end my dmg output was insane. The gear I was able to assemble for myself was great also I just wish I didn't lose most of my gear between the last two expansions, ( damn drow)
I've played through twice now
10/10/6 monk/assassin/shadow dancer
8/10/9 fighter/weapon master/dwarven defender
both of them went through HotU basically no problems, except neither was very good against M. I would probably have better success if I would stick to two classes.
I'm thinking of going through a 3rd time and doing something like cleric/pale master just to see what its like as a caster, and getting higher levels doing only 2 classes.
