Thanks
Michelle, thank you for getting me obsessed with Clay. If not for you, I would never have heard of him. I only regret that I didn't go to the concert, and now he's not touring:( Oh well, I'm sure he'll be touring some time.

THUD again
Hey! Clay was on Nickelodeon on Saturday! I forgot to tape it :( but some people from TTC got the video on the computer! So here are some links to the performance. I don't have Invisible posted, because we've all heard it a million times and the performance wasn't any more spectacular than usual. But, he sang "I Will Carry You"! The whole thing!!! This wasn't my favorite demo, but I love it now!!! It's awesome!! I have the video, and I converted it to mp3!! This is going to be my favorite song now!!! At least for the next 9 days!!!! The quality isn't too great. It was a live performance, so there is some screaming. It's not as bad as the live "Invisible"s though!! Don't worry! Also, make sure you RIGHT CLICK AND SAVE TARGET AS!! I don't have enough bandwidth for you people to play them from my site!!

People on the radio this morning were making fun of clay. It was weird though… For some reason I tried to call in and tell them that they were being dumb, but my cell phone said I wasn’t authorized to call or something…

Re: Clay
So, I put my Clay CD in the computer at the radio station the other day and made a new playlist with the CD on it. I thought that maybe someone would audition it and think, hmm, that's not so bad. But, no. Instead, the wvkc staff gets this email:

to the honorable deejays of wvkc,

this is my first mean email of the year.

some pathetic person put Clay Aiken on the computer.

this is ridiculous.

I can tolerate some bad music, but if I actually allowed someone to be a deejay who listens to music that was written for turds like Clay Aiken, then I apologize to the world.

For you to have the audacity to not only play that crap, but to put it on rotation and advertize it as "PLAY ME!! NEW MUSIC!!", you are the antithesis of everything wvkc intends to represent.

Why don't you blow your mind?

-Ryan

Hmm, this makes me wonder what exactly it is that "wvkc intends to represent!" From thier website, I see that this:

"WVKC is entirely free-format and usually represents every music genre."

"Students are welcome to play music from the WVKC music library or from their own collections. "

"Going with the slogan of "Radio Free Galesburg" and the advantages of being a noncommercial station, WVKC has no official format to speak of. Instead of confining what can be played over the air to a specific genre of music, in the spirit of many great underground and freeform radio stations, we want to provide some variety in the Galesburg market and distinguish ourselves from the rest of the stations that broadcast here. So whatever you want to play is fine with us as long as it is in line with FCC broadcast regulations."

"They also carry a specific format (like adult contemporary, country, or top 40) to try and attract listeners and hire consultants who figure out demographics and cumes and TSLs and stuff like that so that the station can tighten its format more or move towards one that is more profitable. Often, the result is pretty boring radio that plays the same songs with air personalities that are usually kind of lame. "

"What this means is that we have an advantage over the rest of the Galesburg market. We can play whatever type of music that we want during shows. You make the format, you dictate what songs you play instead of having a consultant, computer or play-list do it for you. As a result listeners can find a something called variety, something that in Galesburg seems to be lacking, both in radio and otherwise. We don't have to play commercials that often are a prime reason people tune out a station, and as a result we have the potential to get a lot of listeners who tune out from stations like the Laser because they don't care who gets hit with a chair on the next Springer show (even though that would be a pretty good commercial) or what's happening down at the Hungry Hobo. So if you want to keep those listeners, then you've got to be good on the radio. Not good as in you have to sound like the DJ's on other stations who say little else than what the time and temperature are and that Billy Joel's kicking off another set. But if you're going to play a record, make sure it plays properly. If you're going to talk, know how to use the mics. We provide you with the equipment, some skills, and some help, but how WVKC sounds on the air is really up to you."

Hmm. So, why am I being slandered for putting Clay on the computer?? It's no different than other people putting their music on the computer, or trying to get people to play the rotation CDs. I don't care if people don't like Clay!! That's their own opinion. I'm not going to force them to play it, or even listen to it (except Spencer :) ). I have't threatened anyone with anything. However, I do on occasion get e-mails saying to play the rotation cds or they will kill our first born children. Is that a better thing to do than to write "PLAY THIS!! BRAND NEW!". Hmm, I'm doubtful. So, maybe I should be sorry that I don't like music where you have to hit the skip button every ten seconds in order to make it "radio friendly." Maybe I should be sorry that when I put that CD on there I didn't include an e-mail threatening people to play it or giving the exact times that cusing occurs. Maybe that's because the entire world doesn't like the same thing that you do!! Perhaps, and this is just a shot in the dark, people could have their own opinions. I'm glad that you like the kind of music that you do. That's your decision. I am also glad that I like the music that I do, because it makes me happy. I enjoy listening to Clay, but if others don't, they shouldn't listen to him! I have listened to tons of those rotation cds looking for something I could even stand long enough to play on my show. Then I have to listen to them several times to make sure that I'm not going to lose my show for playing them. So, if it really is true that "whatever you want to play is fine with us as long as it is in line with FCC broadcast regulations," then maybe you shouldn't belittle people for the kind of music they listen to. If you don't want people to put music on the computer, maybe you should just send out an e-mail that says don't put your own playlists on the computer. I assumed that it would be okay for me to make my own playlist because I have seen other people's playlists on there. Some of them have even had titles very similair to "PLAY THIS!!" One of the tings that I like most about Knox is that people have a great variety of tastes and styles. I was truely floored to find this e-mail today. Knox appears to be a place of diversity. So, why is the radio station that claims "You make the format, you dictate what songs you play instead of having a consultant, computer or play-list do it for you," trying to tell me that I'm a pathetic person who likes music written for turds like Clay Aiken? I really don't understand. It's not like I'm playing the most despised person in music. His first single went platinum! (add other info here i get from clay boards......)

---------------

hmm, originally i was just venting about that e-mail, but it turned into more of a response to it. I'm not sure if I'm going to send it yet or not. You should tell me if it sounds too bitchy. Have a great day!!!

Re: Clay
That was really rude for him to say that. You should at least tell them a little of what you wrote. You should at least inform him that Clay's album went platinum. Of course, if this is the same person that wrote the guidelines on the notebook in the station, then he is just dumb and should be ignored… I don’t mind Clay, but that guy doesn’t have a right to say anything. Oh well.

For you to have the audacity to not only play that crap, but to put it on rotation and advertize it as "PLAY ME!! NEW MUSIC!!", you are the antithesis of everything wvkc intends to represent.

Okay… that doesn’t make sense. Most of clay’s songs are love songs… so… WVKC intends to represent hate? Hmmm… that’s odd.

After I read the e-mail from him my first thought that came to mind was “idiot.” You should tell him I said that. ;)

I defiantly agree with Lindsay that you should send him that e-mail. Just don’t slander him; you wouldn’t want to go down to his level. :)

BTW, I can’t get the radio show to work. It tries to open in my DVD player… and then when I get it to open in Media Player there is an error.

Ryan fitzgerald needs to be flogged!!
So, I actually wasn't going to respond to his stupid e-mail, but it really bothered Kourtney, so she sent him this response:

Ryan,
>I just had to ask you what the deal was with your last e-mail. You obviously have no regard to others feelings and you have absolutely no right to bash their music. Just because you are the General Manager doesn't mean you get to add extra rules just because you feel like it. The radio station plays all genres and none are to be excluded just because you don't like it. Personally I think your music sucks, but I'm not going to go announce to the rest of the radio station and tell you you're a sad and pathetic person. I think you should apologize in a letter to the deejays and maybe personally to the person you insulted. I doubt you care what I think, but I'm sure someone will find your e-mail totally inappropriate. I'll contact them if you continue to bash people and refuse to apologize. Just my thoughts...
>Kourtney Cone

Note that she sent this directly to him, not to all of wvkc. He replied to all of wvkc with this:

So, I was a bit irritated, because not only did he slander me and Clay, but he slandered Kourtney, and sent her name to everyone along with it. So, I sent him this. I don't want to bash him, but he has no right to treat us like crap!! I'm so upset. Stupid @#%$ @#%$!! (sorry about language!) (ETA: wow, the sensor usually only uses astricks!)

I really don't understand. It's not like I'm playing the most despised person in music. His first single went platinum in 37 days! It is the number two best selling single of all time! His brand new debut album shipped platinum and more than likely broke the record for the most number of albums from a debut artist sold in the first week, previously held by 50 Cent.

But that's not why I like Clay Aiken. I like Clay Aiken because I believe that he is talented and that he is an amazing person due to all that he represents. I'm not asking others to like him. I'm not asking others to listen to him. All I'm asking for is to not be insulted for my preferences. Liking Clay has nothing to do with intelligence levels, and to suggest so is insulting. How does it make you more intelligent than I am to judge people based on what kind of music they listen to.

Furthermore, I was not originally going to respond to this e-mail. It really mad me mad that some people here are that close-minded, but I was going to let it blow over. Then my friend e-mailed you because it upset her that you were slandering us. Notice that she e-mailed YOU. She did not feel the need to send this conversation to the whole staff, because it doesn't involve them. For you to reply to her e-mail in the way that you did is inexplicably rude. You belittled both of us to the entire staff, yet when she chose to speak to you, you could only reply with further slandering to the whole staff. Therefore, I am sending this to everyone so that they can hear both sides without your discrimination. If you would like to involve everyone, then let them be involved. Perhaps someone will realize how unmerited your bashing is.

To everyone else,
Have a great day!!

Michelle,

that @#%$ guy made me so mad that I decided to send him an e-mail myself. He's going to be sorry he ever started this thing, because it might result in his removal. What a @#%$ jerkoff! It's people like that that I can really imagine hurting badly, and I haven't even met the guy!

You should tell more people about the e-mail, and have them all send him e-mails. I would also suggest petitioning whoever is in charge of him to get him fired, because he has definitely outstepped his duties here.

Here is the e-mail I sent him:

Ryan,

I don't know you, but I read the e-mails you sent to the staff recently about putting Clay Aiken on the playlist. You are an incredibly rude person, and closed-mided to boot. You hurt the feelings of my friends and publicly embarrassed them, and I would like you to know that that is not acceptable. I can't believe that WVKC would choose as its manager someone with so little tolerance for different opinions. You are a prejudiced person, and I hope you get removed from your position as manager.

Why don't YOU go blow your mind.

Wow. I can’t believe how rude that guy was! Personally, I think that if he responds like that again you should go to a large clay-fan message board, explain the situation to them, and have them send e-mails to him. If he doesn’t start to see that some people do like clay then… well… at least he might have tons of e-mails to sort through in his inbox. ;)

Whatever you do, don’t let him scare you away from doing your show. If you do, then he will think he has won.

Good luck.

thanks for the support guys!! i recieved several e-mails after I sent that one stating that the main problem was that it was added to the overnight rotation. None, of course, from the lovely ryan. I was unaware of this, and I could see why they would be upset. They have all stated this in a way that is not demeaning, however, which i have been e-mailing them thanks them for. My hope is that he just doesn't bother to respond. That would be his defeat. anyway, thanks again!

I know i probably shouldn't have done this, but I e-mailed the guy too. I tried to be appropriate so as not to risk any harm to you, Kourtney and Michelle. I'd like to truly give that guy a piece of my mind, but I'll refrain unless told otherwise. Peace out >:

--------------------------------------

Ryan,

I am a loyal listener at WVKC. I've received word that one or two of your deejays have been publicly and rudely criticized for playing Clay Aiken's music on WVKC. I rather enjoy their show and all of the music they play, even Clay Aiken. WVKC is acclaimed for its diversity. I feel that Clay Aiken, along with any other music group appropriate for radio, has a right to be a part of that diversity. I'm not going to ask you to like Clay's music. However, I would appreciate it if you would let WVKC live up to its honorable name. Allow the variety and please apologize to the deejays that have been offended. Thank you.

Best wishes,

Gabriel Hart

I know the "loyal listener" part is a little far-fetched, but oh well, he doesn't know that. ;)
