Cartoons from yesteryear
Just wondering what cartoons you remember watching in the past - use this topic to discuss any cartoons that have had no new episodes for some time.

Speaking for myself, I'm into stuff from the late eighties/early nineties. Thundercats, Visionaries, Captain Planet, The Raccoons . . . you get the picture?

So, come on - what do YOU remember watching?

Re: Cartoons from yesteryear
I remember the Care Bears, My Little Pony and the pound puppies. I always wanted the villians to win. Also I remember the disney cartoons that were from their movies like Aladdin and that was some time ago...

This is the space where I would try to direct people to read my fiction but the last thing that I put up was in September. It was on Pojo and is now in the land of the deleted. So I have no fiction whatsoever. Isn't that sad?

Please don't answer that question.

Re: Cartoons from yesteryear
There are really no cartoons that I miss, just shows such as The Muppet Show. And of course, you just can't forget; the loveable Sesame Street character; the COunt! Sure, he's probably the darkest person, but hey.

Re: Cartoons from yesteryear
I miss Sonic the Hedgehog (Not Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, that's still in reruns on Toon Disney, and it wasn't very good.) Also, Earthworm Jim and Freakazoid. And Cartoon Planet, from Cartoon Network. How about Nickelodeon's Doug? And... um... uh... Invader Zim? Hey, it's been cancelled for more than a year now, but I'll admit it IS still in reruns.

Re: Cartoons from yesteryear
I never really saw teenage mutant ninja turtles. It DOES seem dumb, though.

YOu know what i loved and always will? The Muppet Show. It's not on any more, but I'm a muppets freak now. I dug up some old tapes that we had with some of my favorite episodes, and I was sitting on the couch for two hours straight, watching them. Now, if you just look at the stuff I own, you can tell how much I love it; Miss Piggy post-it notes, an Animal necklace......

Re: Cartoons from yesteryear
Muppets, Ninja Turtles, Thundercats, Animaniacs. Freakazoid was awesome too, even though I only every saw about 5 episodes :)

Catsmarch5, I always wanted the bad guys to win too. Catra on She-Ra was my idol for years (anyone remember her? she was Hordak's evil sidekick with a weird speech impediment and freakishly long nails). I used to watch every episode to see if she would somehow win this time. When She-Ra won, that was a consolation prize cause she has a talking pony with a pink mask on his face, plus a hat with wings on which someone renders her family and closest friends completely unable to recognise her. But deep in my heart of lungs I knew Catra was da woman. I even had an action figure which I carried everywhere and flipped out when I lost the cheap little mask that was part of it...

Actually, rooting for villains is something I still do now. I think it's partly because good villains tend to get away with doing things that are more interesting and unpredictable than whatever the hero is supposed to be doing, while bad villains are so unbelievably pathetic and stupid that I feel like marching up to them and telling them to organise their lives. It was surprisingly hard to sit through the LOTR2 movie without jumping up and screaming to the uruk-hai that if they plan on fighting virtual superheroes then they might want to use some proper formations and have a word with their quartermaster about getting some decent armour, since it is apparently common knowledge that they can be instantly killed by an arrow to the neck or armpit.

*inspects hands* Actually, MY nails are freakishly long. Coincidence?

I LOVE YOUR LEMON PIE!
Don't get her started on LOTR, it'll most likely ruin a lot of rosy conceptions about the whole damned trilogy. Not to say that I'm not better off for it, but it was nice before, to be sure. :b

I suppose that I must've watched Ghostbusters when I was reaaally little, because I have vague memories of greenish ghost shows and I carried around a plastic toy of what I called the 'marshy-mallow man' for years. The hands always broke off and I used to cry. Then I drew on him with highlighter and promptly lost all interest.

Ninja Turtles as well; I think Leonardo was my favourite. Recently I saw the show again and it was like...people in turtle suits running around...really weird.

I also watched Animaniacs (though Yakko was infinitely annoying), Care Bears (despite the fact that I hated it and found Hugs and Tugs to be the stupidest characters ever - but what else was on at 6:30 in the morning?), and Loony Tunes (in which I inevitably rooted for Wile E. Coyote and was disappointed). Quality television all round.

But have you seen the crap that passes for cartoons these days? I'm talking stuff that you'd (or at least the Canadians among us would) find on Teletoon...like 'Girl Stuff, Boy Stuff,' 'Braceface' and 'Spongebob Squarepants' and whatever. Despite Spongebob's huge fan following among wannabe stoner idiots, I really can't see the point or the humour in the show...

Also, the 'Sabrina the Teenage Witch' cartoon was bloody awful. Enough said. :b

I HATE sabrina the teenage witch! You know what I still like?

(don't laugh at me)

Batman and Robin. It seems weird for a girl of my AGE to like Batman and Robin, but Robin's just so cool!

Re: Cartoons from yesteryear
I don't think I ever really got the deal with Batman... why he wants to fight crime by dressing up in a bat costume and amassing a load of different vaguely bat-themed gadgets. And what's up with the overwhelming need for secrecy- does he just have issues?

Actually, I think I remember having this discussion a while ago with a fan of the comic books... the upshot was that for some reason all the villains in Gotham City are really superstitious and so are vulnerable to a hero with a spooky dark sillouhette and stuff. Which kind of raises the question of why they don't just commit crimes during the day when it's nice and sunny and Bruce Wayne is presumably asleep or watching TV or whatever he does when he's off-duty. Well, I guess they all have issues too, or they wouldn't get fixated with wordgames or penguins.

Having said that, the standard of animation and character design on the cartoon was pretty cool, and I thought that movie with Catwoman in it was awesome (cause although it makes little sense, the whole thing is good enough to suspend disbelief :) ). The Poison Ivy/Mr Freeze movie just plain sucked.

shortest ride EVAR!
One time I went on a ride at Six Flags called Mr. Freeze.

And I think that Batman hides all the time because he's still in the closet or something. I mean, look at the guy - skintight rubber suit, capers a lot, hides in a basement with an old man and a guy named 'Robin'? I mean, come ON.

it might sound silly for me to think childish thoughts like this
but I'm so tired of acting tough and I'm gonna do what I please

Batman and Robin Are COOOOL!
How can you hate Batman and Robin? Well, I only really watch the Classic 60's version every morning at 4:00. Robin's my favorite, believe it or not. I like the fact that he says dumb (and cool!) stuff. For example.....

"Holy Junk Science, Batman!"

Maybe I'll post a list of Robin quotes.....

Re: Batman and Robin Are COOOOL!
Well, I used to want to collect comic books once upon a time, and I spent a lot of time memorizing character bios. So to answer dia's question:

Yes. Batman has issues. his whole "Dark Knight" thingie all goes back to when he was a little boy. He was walking home with his parents from a movie one night, and they took a shortcut through an alley to get to their car. As fate would have it, in that very same alley were some thugs who mugged and killed his parents right in front of his eyes. (one of these thugs would one day be known as the Joker, but that's a different story...)

The cops arrived at the scene before the thugs had a chance to kill little Bruce, and so he was forced to live with the memory of his parents tragic death for the rest of his life. He made a promise to himself that he wouldnt let this happen to anyone else, and so thats why he only goes out at night. Apparently the police can handle things better when its bright out.

As for the gayness thing, I wouldnt put it past him...or Robin, for that matter...

Re: Batman and Robin Are COOOOL!
I agree with Meloaf. I never collected the comics, but I still get up at 4:00 every morning to watch an hour of the 60's version.

And Diantra, I don't know why BATman, but hey- it's one of life's mysteries.
