Sister Named Desire (open!)
The cafeteria is busy, because it's lunch time. Now that classes are in session, the energy level of the students (in some cases, already too energetic) has rocketed through the roof. The cafeteria ladies and the cafeteria man pass out food as if they're working a prison line. It's debateable whether or not they're the jailors or the prisoners.

The assistant janitors are also on over time: A food fight is in danger of starting every five minutes, it seems! And it will go badly for them too, if the vice principal is called.

And into this morasse, throw Genevieve Vendetta. She is sitting at a table, in the corner, next to a slitted window, which looks out onto the quad. Light slants from the window across her shoulder, casting a rectangle on the table.

The light grazes her hair, plucking brighter strands from what's already bright. She has one elbow on the table, and is resting her chin in the palm of her hand. Her head is tilted to the side, and her gaze off to the side, and blank with thought.

In her other hand is a plastic spork, and it's poised against some concoction that looks disgusting and vomitous, even for cafeteria food. Even for *this* cafeteria food.

Re: Sister Named Desire (open!)
Reikia glanced across the packed lunch room, trying just to find an empty seat, never mind a table. Out of the corner of one of her sky blue eyes, she spied a chair next to a girl with honey coloured hair. Smiling nervously she weaved herself in and out of tables crowded with individuals, coming up to stop just behind her.

“Is anyone sitting here?” Reikia asked uncertainly, as a strand of her blue hair fell into her face. Annoyed, she balanced the tray on one hand, while pushing the lock back with her free hand. “It’s just I can’t see any others free, so thought I would ask.”

Unconsciously she had shifted the tray back to its original position, tightly held by both her hands. She looked downwards at the food on the tray, and frowned wondering why she was going to all this difficulty for something she might not actually eat. She shrugged and looked back up cheerfully at the young woman. Well she had already asked, so could hardly change her mind now.

Is anyone . . .

V's eyelashes drift low, not quite a blink, and then rise as she turns her gaze from the window to Reikia, a girl of blue and snow. The blank thoughtfulness leaves her gaze, replaced by focus. V looks like such a warm person: hair, such a relentless gold, eyes, as gold as a flame reflected on melted honey, as gold as a fox spirit's eyes.

. . . sitting here?

V straightens, too. Lifts her chin from her palm, and lets that hand drop to the table, where her fingers curl. Automatically, she pokes the quivering mess on her plate with her spork, turning it over to reveal, well. Who knows what it really is?

"No. You're welcome to sit here."

Reikia smiled at her response, this time with her eyes, something which never seems to affect her mouth. Unconsciously her hand went to the pendant around her neck. Something she was costumed to do, although she never really needed to check it was there. The weight was enough to declare its presence.

“Thanks,” Reikia said gratefully, placing her tray on the table and sitting down. She picked her spork up but didn’t touch anything with it. Nothing seemed that appealing. Instead she spoke again, “I’m Reikia by the way, but everyone calls me Rei. Can I ask you name?”

Looking towards the window, she stuck the spork in her mouth and nibbled the plastic. Her gaze returned slowly to look at the food before her, though none of it registering in her mind as food at all. Fearfully, as it might just come alive and attack her, she poked a mushy off white substance which she guessed was went to be mash potato. Sighing, she replaced the fork back in her mouth, deciding that it probable tasted better.

Re: Sister Named Desire (open!)
Most of the other tables are full. And there has to be a reason. Whisper, whisper, whisper. The new girl and Genevieve. Genevieve and the new girl.

"Rei," V repeats. She commits the name to memory, and hopes memory takes good care of it. "Most people call me V. What grade are you in?" As Reikia's face grows fearful and she (quiver, quiver) sporks up a mouthful of white mush (and it is mashed potatoes! bravo! good guess!), V takes a couple of salt packets and pepper packets off of her own tray and puts them on Reikia's.

Salt is what people used to put on their food in the middle ages, when they regularly ate rancid food. It has to work on cafeteria food, eh?

Reikia looked from her to food to V at the sound of her voice speaking. Surprised she actually answered; she was used to being ignored and was glad she had asked now. Thoughtfully, as she etched the name onto her brain though it wasn’t that difficult, she slid the spork out of her mouth.

“V’s nice. Nice and simple. I’m in the tenth grade, you?” She replied, waving the spork in the air as she did so. With her other hand, she picked one of the salt packets. Biting her bottom lip, she sprinkled the salt on to the mashy substance. Pulling a face she dipped the spork into the mash and put it to her mouth.

Cautiously she licked the edge of it, wondering if it would be any better and bravely placed the spork in her mouth. Slowly she removed the now clean spork, and swallowed the salty potato. She decided it didn’t taste that bad, and continued to take another bite. Anyway, if she didn’t eat this, she would go hungry and was famished enough as it is, since she didn’t consume breakfast.

“Thanks,” Reikia said, turning to face V and grinning. “I doubt it would make desert taste better though.”

"Me too." The answer. V's not in the sophomore English class, but she's in most of the other sophomore classes. While Reikia struggles with the salty, wet pseudo-mashed potatoes, V's gaze drifts to the pale and milky pendant the other girl touched before, shining so whitely against her breastbone. The serious girl nods, gravity in motion; and says, "Maybe not. But what can you do to ruin a brownie?"

The cafeteria man who hates all of the sudents, most particularly those students who are rich or seem to come from wealthy backgrounds, will no doubt be happy to enlighten the two girls as soon as they're ready for dessert.

Reikia paused for the moment and thought over what could possible ruin a brownie. She looked down at the provisions in front of her and sighed. She couldn’t think of anything, well anything that would make it a brownie still. Gently she put her spork down on the tray, giving up the struggle with the food. She could cook better, and that was saying something.

“Well frankly I have no idea,” Reikia answered, pushing her tray out of the way, and placing her elbows on the canteen table. Her gaze shifted to the window again, oblivious to the chatting going on around her. Thoughtfully she twisted to face V, smiling as she asked, “Do you think I smile too much?”

Rayd sat at a nearby table, sunglasses covering his face as usual, wearing his black pants, and sleeveless shirt, revealing his muscular arms, and the tattoo on his left bicep. He had bought his food from a resturant... One of the many perks of his teleportation ability, any food's fast food, no matter where it comes from. He looked up from his meal to see V, somebody he hadn't talked to for a while, or seen for that matter, though his own absence didn't help at all. The girl sitting with her must have been new, as he didn't recognise her at all, and he knew most of the girls in the school.

He shrugged and returned to his meal for now, knowing he was probably the only one in the caffeteria with a decent meal, and there was no way he was gonna let it go to waste.

He brushed his hair out of his face as he reached for his coffee, something he had been drinking less of lately, especially now that it was a lot easier for him to get to sleep at night, it was still hard, but no where near as hard as it used to be.

... I have risen. In this time of Need...

Re: Sister Named Desire (open!)
V rests her elbow on the table again.

The movement dips her into the shaft of light, then out, again: briefly ablaze, and back to dusk. Like embers, or cinder, or tinder for a flame. Reikia's the one sitting in the light, and her shocking, vibrant blue hair is a-glow, and so lovely; V doesn't mention it (yet), but she does note. It doesn't look dyed. But is it?

"No." She doesn't mean to sound so aloof. But she does. People get used to it, or they don't. Mild puzzlement: "Do you think you do?"

Rayd is nearby, located (from V's perspective) just beyond the radiance rebounding off of Reikia's blue hair. (Say that five times fast: Rayd relaxes relatively close to the radiance rebounding from Reikia's hair.)

Re: Sister Named Desire (open!)
Reikia frowned, not at V’s detachment which had gone unobserved, but at the question. She gazed at the window, like if she was searching for an answer, when a particularly harsh brightness caught her eye. Her first reaction was to go and wipe it, but stopped herself knowing it would only water worse. Blinking furiously she looked away towards V and answered, “I think so.”

Unknown to Reikia, V had detected someone else’s presence nearby. Not that she had reason too, since she didn’t really know anyone. Unconsciously Reikia had started humming a tune, gazing at V’s golden coloured hair. Wistfully she yearned her own locks were the same colour. Blue was a hard colour to match, hence the reason Reikia’s clothes were always white or blue; something which got quite tedious after a while.

The teenager opens another salt packet and upends it on her chili. Daintily, delicately, and above all efficiently she separates the most questionable pieces of meat from the beans. Beans are impossible to ruin. Burn, maybe. But they can't be ruined or ruinous. Her gaze lifts from Rayd, and returns to Reikia; the answer isn't what she expected (although it's usually difficult to tell what V expects of things).

"Why?"

“Well… I don’t know. I just smile all the time, including now,” she answered, comically smiling. Whilst speaking she had yet again picked up the white spork, waving it around in the air dangerously with her right hand. Suddenly, at the same time as watching it, she made it dive and scoop up a lump of greyish mash. Carelessly flicking it, making it soar across the cafertia, disappearing somewhere between the collection of students; hopefully not landing on anyone.

Reikia blanched, dropping the spork as she did so, which made a dim clatter as it hit the synthetic tray. Her cheeks going pink, as she turned from the direction it had landed, running a hand through the length of her hair. She hadn’t expected it would go that far, more just like an inch or two across her plate. Well it was done now.

Ciara blinks at the greyish sludge sliding down her shirt, falling off the crest of her bust to plop wetly in the middle of her chili bowl. She looks for the source of the projectile and, noticing Rei doing everything in her power to *not* look in her direction, deems that she was probably the beginning point of the pseudo-comestible missile.

Shrugging, she heads over to Rei's table, her forehead creased with a frown. "Beggin' yer pardon, but is it an American custom t' throw yer food at foreign exchange students on their first day?" She grins mischievously, obviously not angry or upset. Ciara's always been too friendly to take insults too seriously unless physical harm is involved. Getting a little food on her shirt isn't too grievous a tragedy, so she can cope with it.

Slow motion replay . . .

The spork is in Reikia's hand ! She's waving it around ! She dives ! She scoops ! She scores ! Mushy, gray stuff fills the spork (oh, nice play). But, oh no! What this? She gestures, again ! Man down, man down - the gray stuff flies.

Disappears . . .

Back to the present. Genevieve's spine has straightened; her head has turned to follow the arc the projectile made. Depending on who that hits, there could be trouble; after all, not everybody who goes to MHS is stable. But she doesn't see who it hits, and as there's no sudden roar of rage, followed by some bullbrained boy jumping up and revving his powers -- she looks back at Reikia.

"Nobody seems to have minded." Opaque.

Enter, Ciara - with her rough burr of a voice (unless, of course, it's a lilt, as liquid as the sea and as rise-and-fall). Because she wasn't the one addressed, her gaze goes from Ciara to Reikia.

“Erm…” Reikia was lost for words; her eyes became fixed upon the spot where the projectile had hit. She took a deep breath to calm down; however the flush was still there.
“Custom? Oh no, it was totally an accident really,” she paused for a moment, wondering what she could do to make up for the unfortunate misfortune. Her gaze was still fixed upon the shirt; well it wouldn’t be much but…

“I know. I could give you money for dry cleaning… I don’t know how lethal this cafertia food is... or maybe give you money for a new shirt?”
She smiled hopefully; she didn’t look like someone who was about to start a fight about it, in fact she looked pretty reasonable with her impish grin. It could have been worse, she had to acknowledge, but yet again it could have been better. It could have not hit anyone at all.

Ciara chuckles good-naturedly. "Och, dinna ye worry yerself aboot this." Her Scots brogue, thick as honey, coats every word and audible expression, making her speech both a trick and a treat to the ear. " 'Tis an old shirt that I was fixin' t' be rid o'." She grins down at the two ladies, the gesture very open and kind. "F'rgive me manners, dears. Me name's Ciara MacChruim." ((pronounced Keera MacCroom)) She juggles her tray carefully over to her left hand and extends the right first to Rei then to V in greeting.

Reikia sighed with relived, though she was still anxious if there was anything she could do to make up for her freak accident. Thoughtlessly she took her right hand in her own, shaking it briefly as she spoke, “Hey Ciara. I’m Reikia. Nice to meet you.”

Timidly she looked down at her tray of food, the spork splintered from where she had dropped it. Staring at the grey mush on her plate, she reckoned she would never eat mash potato again. She really meant never.

Slowly she looked up towards V and watched Ciara's hand extend towards her. Placing an elbow on the table, she proped her head up, a wave of shimmering blue hair carelessly hanging over an eye. For some reason, she wondered what V would do in this type of situation.

There is a moment's worth of adjustment to this new accent. MHS is so full of foreign students, the ear expects to hear one accent, is ready to interpret it, and then - Scottish brogue. How unexpected.

Reikia (what a cute girl) takes Ciara's hand, the relief she feels all too evident on her face, and then drops her head.

Ciara turns to V, and V, polite and courteous, shakes her hand. American-style. "Ciara," she repeats, testing the pronunciation. Then: "I'm V. You're welcome--" and here, a half-glance for Reikia, as if to see whether her words would be argued against "--to sit."

Reikia noticed the glance towards her, giving her a chance to argue. Instead she just shrugs. She didn't mind who sat there, V was at the table first and could invite anyone she wanted to sit down. Anyway, she rather liked the mischievous looking Scottish girl.

Her accent was interesting to listen too, unlike her dull boring one which had a slight ping to it because of her Japanese heritage from her mother’s side. Her accent maybe be an English/American one, since she had lived with her father, but unnoticeable differences could sometimes be heard.

She started humming to the tune she had started early, bobbing her head as she did so. Not saying anything, she indicated to a chair, giving a small smile to Ciara as she did so.

Ciara grins amiably. " 'Tis a pleasure t' meet ye, Reikia." She has a little bit of difficulty pronouncing Reikia's name, stumbling over the unfamiliar vowel combinations before spurting out something not quite right, but not far off. She gives Reikia a sheepish smirk. "I'm verra sorry if I dinna say yer name aright. I have a hard time sayin' things that are a wee bit unusual t' me, and yer name certainly is that."

She then turns to V, shaking her hand firmly. "And 'tis a pleasure t' meet you, as well, V." She chuckles quietly. "I dinna think I'll be havin' any trouble sayin' yer name, dearie."

When V offers a seat at the table, Ciara waits for the okay from Reikia before nodding. "Aye, I'd like that verra much, thank ye. I dinna know many people an' I c'n just see meself standin' against a corner tryin' t' eat all this mush wi'oot a seat." She chuckles again and, taking her tray firmly in both hands, takes a seat beside V. She tosses her purplish-blue hair over her shoulder with a negligent flip of her head and picks up a spork, prodding one of the many unmentionables on her tray.

With a faint up-turning of her lip, she looks between Reikia and V. "Beggin' yer pardon, dears, but does this school often serve food that ye canna tell what's what?" She glances back down to her tray, trying to recognize the food. At the buffet counters, she requested a bowl of chili, salsbury steak, some chicken fingers, and milk. Much of it looks like half-formed cakes of mud and Ciara is definitely not used to that. Then again, the food that she is used to, doesn't tend to look very appetizing to many Americans.
