Re: From on High (edward)
"Yes, we've met. All things considered, I think I was lucky to get away alive."

Ryoko started laughing as she wondered what Ayeka would have done to him. At least he wasn't stuck living with her like she was. Still, Ayeka wasn't all that bad. Ryoko had the best time teasing her and making her angry. The actions of her roommate were always funny to watch. " She's my roommate. What did she do to you?" Ryoko asked. She could tell him a few stories about Ayeka if he asked, she had plenty of them.

" She's my roommate. What did she do to you?"

"Well, I was trying to introduce myself to her friend, a young lady in a yellow dress with several piercings. She then proceeded to mace me. I mean, the chemical." He paused for a minute, thinking. "Although, if she had an actual mace on her, she probably would have used that, too."

No way in hell he was getting into a situation where he was caught between those two girls. It'd probably be quicker and less painful to just hurl himself through the window and take his chances. Although, now that they had gotten to talking, Ryoko on her own might not be so bad. He wondered distantly what another trip in the sky might be like in those strong arms of hers.

"I can't imagine what it would be like, living with a girl like that. What has she done to you?"

Ryoko already knew that Ayeka had mace because of when she threatened Daedelus with it in the gardens. Spraying this young man in the face sounded just like her, though maybe a little more angry than other days. She thought about the friend he could be talking about. It sounded like Hawthorne, but in a dress? Well, if she was hanging out with Ayeka she could probably get her into it. " That sounds like Ayeka to me. And the other girl sounds like Hawthorne. Did she mention her name to you?" Ryoko asked.

"I can't imagine what it would be like, living with a girl like that. What has she done to you?"

Laughing lightly, Ryoko looked back on all the times she spent with Ayeka. " Well when I first met her I ran her down on my skateboard by accident, and then she turned out to be my roommate. She slapped me once for pushing her pot plant off the windowsill. Ooh, there was this one time when me and this guy Pax were playing video games and then she kicked him out cause she doesn't like boys in our room. Then she left and I got back at her by cutting up her favourite dress. And what did she do? She got her bow and arrows and kicked down everyone's doors on floor three, cause she was looking for me. I was hiding in Pax's room and we had to fly out the window to get away from her." She explained.

" That happened not too long ago. Pax is really scared of Ayeka, but I thought it was fun." Ryoko added, smiling at the stranger. Getting Ayeka angry was something she just loved to do.

" That sounds like Ayeka to me. And the other girl sounds like Hawthorne. Did she mention her name to you?"

"Actually, no, she didn't. And she didn't mention it when we met in the hot springs either. I seem to have the worst luck around her, we keep meeting under strained circumstances. She is a most... forceful woman, in a non-destructive way."

He wasn't about to explain what had happened at that meeting to Ryoko if he could help it. He still wasn't at all ashamed over what had happened, but it would be difficult to explain himself given the face of it.

As he listened to Ryoko's litany of complaints, he realized that he had indeed gotten off light. However, even as she listed all the things Ayeka had done she continued to smile. Those two were apparantly really close if Ryoko could take all of that without complaint.

... but I thought it was fun."

And there she was toying with people again. Well, from the sound of her story Pax hadn't really been hurt, so maybe all of her wanton ways weren't so bad after all.

"I can say I have a healthy concern about her, with good reason. But I'm not afraid. If you ever feel the need to put her off a bit, feel free to invite me over for tea. Just promise you'll give me a head start." He smiled back at her, not really expecting her to act on the offer. Just showing Ayeka hadn't scared him off was enough of a moral victory for him. No doubt miss priss would hear about it, and he could just picture her face now.

Ryoko remembered Ayeka's rules for her, and how she'd broken them all within the first week. It made her smile when she thought of the reaction she got. " Ayeka had three rules for me. One was no boys in the room; she thinks I'm some kind of 'lady of the night' if you know what I mean. The second one was that I couldn't stay up late. When your a thief its hard not to stay up late, since I'm out most nights working." She began.

She paused for a moment as she tried to remember the last one. " Oh yeah, and the last one was not to touch her plants. Ayeka talks to trees and she has three small ones in our room. She pissed off my clone and she pushed it off the windowsill..." Ryoko explained. She forgot that he didn't know she made clones.

Re: From on High (edward)
He had to still himself as she mentioned working just about every night. Sure, Arthur had put in long hours himself when mapping out a job or observing someone while waiting for a drop, but a theif who worked every night was either reckless or foolish. The whole point of theiving was so you didn't have to work endless amounts of time doing pointless things again and again.

However, it seemed to fit her style, unsophisticated and direct. She was probably a smash and grab, low-scale type. Granted, if he could do what she could he might adopt a less deliberate approach, but somehow it offended his sensebilities.

"Anyone who would mistake you for a streetwalker is clearly a fool, and it's no crime to enjoy the quiet and solitude of the night."

"She pissed off my clone and she pushed it off the windowsill..."

Clone... he didn't think she was talking about a science expiriment gone wrong. Well, he had stumbled over something on the roof, and it did feel sort of like a person. He had been half-waiting for someone else to try to spook him by appearing out of nowhere, but that might be it too. Well, he could play it cool too.

"I didn't get a good look at her the first time. Do you mind showing me again?" he asked, interest perked.

Ryoko realised that he mustn't have seen her clone just before. Oh well, it didn't take too much out of her to make a clone for a little while. Ryoko allowed her feet to touch on the ground once more. She clapped her hands together once, then knelt down and placed one hand on the ground. " Kage Bushin No Jutsu!" She shouted.

Just like before, smoke and dust picked up around them. When it cleared there was a perfect double of Ryoko standing beside her. The clone was the more nice one, as opposed to the other one she was able to make. " Yeah, this is my clone." Ryoko said. The clone waved to the boy lightly. " Hi." Was all she said.

Another flashy maneouver, hmm? He wondered how this girl managed to steal anything. She couldn't sneak up on anything smaller then an tank from the looks of it. Then again... maybe she was being showy just to throw him off.

He looked back an forth between her and her double, trying to find a difference between them. His hand reached up, power reaching out to touch the clone's shoulder. She felt solid enough, allright.

There was no way he could keep himself from saying it. "You must be popular with the boys, with this trick." There was no hint of mockety in the declartion; it was a simple statement of fact.

"You must be popular with the boys, with this trick."

The clone looked over to Ryoko, unsure of how she should take what he said to them. It was at this point that Ryoko wished she'd brought out her other clone, the one that would have taken obvious offense to what he said and tore him a new one. He was lucky the nice one always seemed to be made first when she didn't pick one of them.

Ryoko fused back with her clone quickly. She decided not to take his comment in the obvious way that a lot of other people would have. " It's never made any difference." She commented.

" It's never made any difference."

"Then the boys you've known were either very staid, or liars. Either way, a tragedy." He smiled broadly at her, cheekily teasing her sensebilities. Probably best for a quick subject change right about now...

"I'm almost embarrassed now. All I can do is a little slight of hand, hardly anything compared to the abilities of most here. I know I've felt isolated enough even with such a small trick. For you, and being a thief on top of it, it must be a lot harder." His thought took a left turn in the middle, eyes falling and voice filling with honest sympathy.

Ryoko looked at him with a strange look in her eyes. Half way through what he was saying it just got different. " There are a lot of students with better abilities. And they got them by training and working hard to get better at them. Making clones for me has its drawbacks. Everyone has their drawbacks. It's why some of them train so much." She explained.

But when it came to what he said about it being a lot harder for her, it seemed that the conversation turned a little more serious. " You only feel isolated if you let yourself be that way. I never feel isolated or alone here anymore because I've got good friends who would look after me if I ever felt that way. Being a thief has nothing to do with how I feel. I'm proud of my ability and I'm pretty good at it, so it doesn't stop me from doing anything." Ryoko added. Her voice didn't show anger or anything like that, it was a more serious tone in her voice.

"Really?" he examined his feet as he asked. "I'll have to look around for someone to try that with. I haven't really had that chance to try things out with a person who knew what was going on." He had seen a big domed arena not far from here; Art resolved to check that out later.

" You only feel isolated if you let yourself be that way. I never feel isolated or alone here anymore because I've got good friends who would look after me if I ever felt that way. "I don't know... I mean, I'm good at what I do, but ... isn't our job basically just... hurting people, taking from them?" Art didn't really feel that way, but it seemed to fit with the tone he was taking at the moment. He had never stolen from anyone who didn't deserve it, and felt quite justified with what he had done. "And... well, I just got here, and I really don't have many friends yet."

Ryoko looked down to the ground. " In all honesty, I never really thought about what we do." She began. Stealing was something she was pushed into, and Ryoko was never given the chance to think about it. She had to work so much here to support both herself and her father, it just wasn't fair. " I never hurt anyone physically, well I try not to. But I suppose emotionally they get hurt when there belongings are stolen." She said.

"And... well, I just got here, and I really don't have many friends yet."

Ryoko looked back up to Art. " It's not hard to make friends here. Within my first week I met a guy named Jun-Bo, and he ended up being a very good friend of mine. Then I met Hawthorne at the gym by accident and now we're, I guess you could say, best friends." She explained. " You're a nice guy, I'm sure you'll have no problems making friends." Ryoko added.

"Truth. I don't know, it always seems liked that isolated me from everyone." He kicked at the gravel of the roof, setting off a small spray. That was a bit backward; he stole because he never really felt connected to anyone in the first place.

" You're a nice guy, I'm sure you'll have no problems making friends."

She hadn't - quite - taken the bait. Most people, given that lead in, would offer to be his friend. Well, he had put her off pretty badly to start with, so that was fair enough. "I'm glad you still think so. I can't say I care much for Hawthorne, but I'm sure amid all the people here I can find at least a few who can tolerate me."

Well, really, the only one he had connected with so far was Arion, and that was so... complicated, he didn't know what to think of it. They were more then friends, definantly, but what were they? His cheeks began to flush as he thought about it.

Ryoko walked over to Art and gave him a sincere smile. " There are a couple of thieves at this school. I'm sure you can't feel isolated if you're hanging around more thieves, since we already have something in common." She explained, her smile changing to a more friendly one. With a little more time, Ryoko thought that her and Art could probably be good friends.

"I'm glad you still think so. I can't say I care much for Hawthorne, but I'm sure amid all the people here I can find at least a few who can tolerate me."

" Hawthorne isn't bad once you get to know her, but yeah, I suppose it's all about how you meet her." Ryoko began. She laughed in her head when she remembered meeting Hawthorne. They seemed like complete opposites, but they had more in common than once thought. " Hell, I'll be your friend if you want." She said, patting him on the shoulder lightly.

"What is the saying, thick as thieves? I'm sure I'll get along fabulously." It was always good to know who the thieves were. They had the best stuff, and if something of his went missing he knew just where to look.

" Hell, I'll be your friend if you want."

"Ah... won't that be a problem? I mean, what with your roomate and your friend calling for my blood? That could get ackward really, really quickly. I am flattered by the offer, I just don't want to put you into an ackward spot." He toyed with the idea of trying to split her away from her friend, appeal to her more unhibited side, but it could only be idle fantasy.

Ryoko laughed lightly. " Don't you worry about Ayeka. She's scary to a couple of my friends. Granted she never sprayed them with mace... but still, she's a meanie." She explained. When it came to Hawthorne however, Ryoko had to think about it. Surely her best friend wouldn't be bothered by Art, would she? " As for Thorny, if she says anything I'll deal with her. It isn't fair that they try to tell me who to be and who not to be friends with. I know Thorny wouldn't try it, but Ayeka might." She added.

He throught for a moment, impressed and heartened by her show of independence. Maybe that's what he had been seeing all along? It just might be. Even if she did seem to have bad taste in friends, she definantly seemed worth knowing. Still...

"How about this. The next time I see the two of you together, I'll come up. You don't tell her we've met, and just see how she reacts. Her response should be fairly informative. As for Ayeka... Probably best to stay away, next time I might knock her out when she pulls another stunt."

He looked away, over the edge of the roof, considering the nearby mountain. "Tell me... do you know of any particular reason why Hawthorne is so shy? I mean, it seems unlike the character she projects with all those studs."

Ryoko wondered how Ayeka would react after she woke up from being knocked out. Knowing her roommate, Ryoko would probably end up with the blame somehow, and Ayeka would talk about it being her fault for being friends with such people. Oh well, it wasn't like Ayeka hadn't judged her friends before. " Sounds like a plan. I wonder how Thorny would react to that." Ryoko replied.

"Tell me... do you know of any particular reason why Hawthorne is so shy? I mean, it seems unlike the character she projects with all those studs."

Ryoko walked over and stood beside him, her hands in her pockets as she looked out to the view. " That depends on how you meet her. If she was in a dress like you mentioned, it was probably because she was in a dress. She's a bit like me that way, I don't get dressed up and I get pretty shy when I do, but she's worse than I am." She explained.

A small laugh came from Ryoko when she thought about Hawthorne wearing the blue dress at the bar. She didn't seem that bad, but it might have been because she was among friends. " Usually she's pretty cool, fun to hang around and all that. Have you only met her that one time?" Ryoko asked.

"I have met her a second time, but the situation was similar. Perhaps that was it." Him naked, her in a swimsuit... yeah, that was a bit more then just her in a dress. He glanced over at her, smirking. "And what she said to when we met then; well, it's just not true. Tell her I offered to show you for myself." Since Hawthorne had insulted his manhood then, it seemed like a perfectly good way to get her back a little for her own words.
