Re: Terra Firma (open)
Two girls had a contest to seduce the most boys? How did I not know about this? This place certainly has been one surprise after another. The look on his face was of total surprise. No point in hiding it, that sort of contest had to be something that would have included him in the testing audience.

"Favorite time of day? I suppose the time I spend awake is the highlight of my day. I get to work out, meet new people, and trip over girls in the meadow." A playful wink of his left eye accompanied his statement. "What about you miss V? Is there a particular time you prefer?"

He looks so surprised it's really comical. Another study in contrasts. Darrien's so expressive; it's hilarious. That expression of utter surprise. V doesn't laugh (as another, merrier student might), or look concerned. Instead -- she reaches down to pluck three strands of grass from the meadow's ground. These, she begins to plait together. By the time she has the grass, Darrien's (all amaze) gone on to answer her question.

When she replies, however, she answers his unspoken questions, plain as they were to see: "The contest didn't last for very long. The reporter girl might be able to tell you more."

And then - his spoken questions. Fireflies begin to spin, come out of the grasses, flick, flash. "I like twilight -- and noon."

Re: Terra Firma (open)
V's ability to read him came as no surprise. Darrien was accustomed to females being able to tell what he was thinking just by looking at him. Once, at the age of seven, he told his mother he had spent the day at the river catching frogs, but she quickly deduced by his expression that he had been with Sarah from down the street all day, and was clearly embarassed for his mother to find out. Maybe he was too expressive, or maybe the females he knew were all psychic, either way, he was in dire need of a change.

"Halfway through the day, and halfway through the night. Those are interesting times of the day indeed." he said, looking V in the eyes. The golden color wasn't like anything he had seen before, yet her facial features reminded him of someone he had known from long ago. The trouble with memories, however, is that it's not easily found again once it is lost.

. . .

She plaits the grass until it becomes a small chain, as resilient as any country folksong. Then Genevieve unravels it. Those are interesting times of the day indeed, Darrien says, and of course she meets his gaze; she never claimed not to be proud, or arrogant, as some of the students who have never been able to look beyond certain aloofnesses think she is. Or, to be honest, the cafeteria man says she is.

(Silence.)

Finally, her gaze pulls away, and she looks up at the sky, instead. Her eyebrows knit together, thoughtfully, but her attention is still Darrien's. Or as much Darrien's as it ever is. (Crowds are distracting things, and there's a crowd in the meadow, under each and every blade of grass.)

Moment of quiet. Brilliant and stunning and happy-go-lucky conversationalist she is not.

Re: Terra Firma (open)
The strange silence between them made Darrien jittery. He wasn't one to enjoy gaps in conversation, yet he knew well enough that there was a right, and a wrong way to fill them. If he were any less of a convorsationalist, he'd simply berrate her with more questions and allow the talk to dry out. That would send them both away with as much fulfilment as a gas station burritto, and no one likes those very much.

Instead, he simply rested his hat on her head and smiled at her. No words, no flamboyant gestures, just a smile.

Let's breakdown the most prominant feature gracing the young man's face a bit, shall we? Everyone, especially Darrien, had varying types of smiles. There was the seductive smile, which this most certainly was not. Baring only a few teeth, this one generally is used to attract members of the opposite sex. Then, you had your playful smile, one of Darrien's favorites. Half of your mouth curls up to show some teeth, while the other half stays in place. Finally, there's the coniving smile, or the smirk, as it's often called. This showed no teeth, and the lips cocked up at one side while the eyes pierced through whatever they were looking at. This smile that Darrien gave V could be confused as either of the last two, depending on when she turned to look.

Plink,

The pink hat is dropped back onto V's head. It settles, then slants, rakishly, over one eye. The quiet fifteen year old blinks, once, and then tips it upward with her thumb.

Very mob boss' daughter.

She (flushes? No, no!) takes in Darrien's smile, which is, whenever she catches it, distinctly reminiscent of Michael's smile, before --

"You look like a fox kami."

-- and she takes the hat off, again, and offers it back to Darrien. Such economy of motion. "And it's dinner time; I should head back to the school."

See, the bats and the crickets are singing.

"So our meeting ends here? I do hope the sequel comes out before next summer, I hate waiting to find out what happens."

Slight wink.

Quick smile.

Then, he took her hand in his and said. "Might I walk you back?"

Some people breathe; Darrien charms. And while he is lighthearted and so flamboyant, even the pink fedora doesn't change that her replies are still typically serious and economical. The most said with the least words. The most done with the least possible movement. Only what is necessary.

"We live in the same place," she says, and take it to mean: I'm sure we'll talk again. Why not?

And then, Might I walk you back?, he says. Her eyebrows lift, thoughtful; and if she's as surprised by the offer as she is by the fact that he's touching her, she doesn't say. [Silent, inscrutable girl.] "Ah," oh yes, she does hang out with Amber; probably too much! "You're welcome to."

"Well then, let us be on our way. I'd hate to be the reason you missed dinner."

Soft wink, quirky smile, slightly arched eye brow. Second nature for Darrien, odds are he didn't realize he was even doing it.

"Lead the way miss V, truth be told I'm rather lost this far from campus." *sweatdrop*

V moves (economy of motion, simplistic view of nature) in front of Darrien and points in one direction: "Coup de Grace Arena. You can see it through the trees."

Then she turns entirely around and points in another direction. "The school." Then she turns just slightly to the side, one o' clock.

"The water fall is over there. You can see the very top of the mountain, I don't know what it's named, right there. Next to the mountain is the Forest of Itami. The lake is that way. If you can see the mountain, you can figure out where the school is."

Thumb and forefinger make an angle, and she squints one golden eye, then finally, she points toward the school.

"So, it's definitely that way."

The wind picks up, again; the crickets all stop.

Shhhhhhh.

What an interesting girl to meet, even in this place full of interesting people. With their barings set, they appeared to be ready to go.

"It got ominously quiet all of a sudden, shall we head on back to the dorm?"

He started to step toward the direction she pointed, thinking of dinner himself as well.

Eyes watching them, but where no one could see. Even if someone wanted to look, they wouldn't find the watcher that easily. Kanami was resting in a tree, her costume made of leaves to blend in, she truly was a chameleon! She had to find a sturdy, flat branch to sit on (she nearly fell out a few times in her hasty search) but once she situated herself she was nothing more than a cameoflaged cluster leaves in the tree.

"Darrien. V. I can definetly get a comprehensive update now."

Then it was silent, an eerie sound in a place such as this...

Good thing I'm prepared.

"MmHmm." She nods to Darrien's assessment. Ominous silence isn't something to stick around for. And they begin to walk.

RrrrRRRRRrrrrR.

Yes, on the surface of things that sound is reminiscent of - well - a cat purring. Except it comes from all around. The horizon; flickers. Those clouds of cloud-watching fame have decided to, well, speak.

RRRRRrrRRRRR.

Darrien'll feel one drop of water on his nose. V will feel one on her collar-bone, and hold out her hand, glancing upward.

Then, with a sound like an egg (a really, really big one) cracking on the side of a bowl, the sky splits open, and Noah's flood comes down with a ROAR and a RUSH and a ROOOOAR and a pwned feeble humans w/ out umbrellas!

Where oh where will the students find shelter? Run alllllll the way back to the dorms? Through the wet and the mud? Or perhaps shelter under a likely looking tree branch, which miraculously seems to be shielding the ground from water ....

Convenience or adventure? Should Darrien be alone in this decision, he'd most certainly tear off in a sprint toward the dorms, making an effort to splash in every puddle along the way playfully. However, V had an equal say in their course from here.

"Wanna make a run for it?" he said playfully, slightly muted by the raindrops falling between them. "Or take refuge beneath the tree for now, until the rain slows a little at least?"

Where did that tree come from? Darrien wasn't the most perceptive in the world, so it was possible it was there all along and he simply hadn't noticed it. The rain was matting his hair down, so he was eager to get out from under its path. Yet, he was strangely comfortable out there in the rain with V, he could stand there a bit longer, if need be.

Re: Terra Firma (open)
Darrien's bright pink hat is a flag of color in a world suddenly made dark. Rain gathers in its brim, and sends it running in mini streams toward the edge; when V, finally, looks away from the clouds and the night and the rain, the stream intensifies, droplets shake loose, and all the fireflies and going to ground. Too wet. Much too wet.

Once again, the hat trades owners; she takes it off, and offers it to Darrien. The rain doesn't bother her, yet, even though we're fast approaching were you thrown into a swimming pool? status.

"It will probably end as quickly as it came; under the tree," she says, and makes good on her words, starting decisively toward the lone tree with its . . . very umbrella-like thatch of leaves . . . Conveniently nearby. Why? Because, to be honest, V doesn't like getting her hair wet, unless it happens to be gathered up.

Mwaha! Caught like little bugs in a spider's web!

It was much more diabolical than it sounded, but it seemed to make sense for Kanami. As expected they would come to take shelter underneath her umbrella-like costume. She wouldn't be affected by the rain either; the leaves had a special coating that the water would roll off the leaves, leaving her nice and dry. Moving only when the wind would make a gust, she turned on a miniature recorder the size of a pen and listened to them.

A little wobble worried her for maybe a moment, but it didn't deter her from her spying missions.

As the two ran under the tree, Darrien couldn't help but laugh. His glasses covered in tiny rain drops, he looked to V's eyes and chuckled.

"A rain jacket. Just this morning I thought 'What could I have forgotten to bring to this place?' and I just realized, I don't even own a rain coat."

The laughter from the boy fizzled into a thoughtful sigh. "I love the rain, it's such fun to run around in. Do you like to play in the puddles?"

Re: Terra Firma (open)

Genevieve stands at the edge of the tree, and holds one slender hand out to the rain. Her gold-as-honey eyes are focused (curiously intense; after all, amber is a great conductor of electricity) on the way the droplets bead along her life-line and her love-line and coalesce into a puddle in the center of her palm. At the question, she flicks a glance toward him.

"I don't know. I haven't since I was -- " Here, she pauses. Genevieve is the kind of person who thinks before she speaks, and she doesn't usually begin to say something that isn't true. "I can't remember ever playing in puddles."

Never played in a puddle? Was she artificially created in a lab and the scientists forgot to add the 'fun childhood activites' center to her brain? Why am I asking myself these questions when she's right in front of me?

"You've never played in puddles? That's unfortunate, you were deprived of one of the most fun things a child can do."

As he spoke, he winked softly at her. Then, that typical grin crept over his lips. "When it stops coming down, we should jump in that big puddle over there." He pointed to a small pond that had formed while they ran for cover under the tree.
