Picnic For One . . . Or More? ((Closed))
Hawthorne tucked a whole bunch of food from the cafeteria and headed out to the meadow. She had grabbed the blanket off her bed in the dormrooms, and just wanted to enjoy herself. She carefully laid out the blanket on top of a little hill, grinning and humming to herself. Then she carefully set up her treasure, a few cans of soda, some jell-o, and a few sandwiches.

She had pulled her hair back into a ponytail this afternoon, tieing it with one of her shoelaces, as indicated by the fact that one of her shoes no longer had a lace in it. Her jeans still needed to be repaired, there was a huge tear in the one seam, but she ignored that as well. She was wearing an Iron Maiden band shirt, and the spiked bracers, but she had left the collar at home. She didn't feel she needed it today.

She swung her head, jingling the handcuff earrings in her ears against one another, and actually laughed out loud. She felt so serene right now, and she didn't know why. Hawthorne flopped herself down on the blanket and unwrapped one of the sandwiches. Yumm. Turkey and cheddar. She took a large bite, chewing thoughtfully as she surveyed the area. She liked it here, she should come down more often. Too bad it was fall, soon it would be too cold for picnicing.

Datu was taking another walk down the meadow, when something caught his nose. He began to sniff the air, looking for where the food was coming from. Crap, he hasn't eaten lunch yet, and a good smell from food was the last thing he needed! It didn't take superhuman sense of smell to smell what he was smelling. He sniffed again, and saw Hawthorne picnicing. Mmmmm....food.... He slowly walked towards her, looking at her, then back at the food.

"Umm, you got room for an extra picnicer, 'cause I didn't eat lunch yet..."

Hawthorne laughed when Datu approached her, eyeing her food ever-so-carefully. Not her original reaction, but then, she was feeling much better lately. She indicated the space on the blanket and the little pile of sandwiches.

"Help yourself and be welcome, there's more than enough room for two."

She grinned, taking another bite of her sandwich as she waited for him to get seated comfortably. When she was finished chewing and swallowing she looked up at him

"I seem to run into you wherever I go. Inendaagozi. It must be fated."

He looked at her, then back at the food. "Yeah, guess so.." He then sat down, and took a sandwich, taking a big bite out of it. He then looked back at her.

"Well, thanks anyways." He then swallowed it, and then took another one.

"Do you always picnic out here?"

She grinned, ducking her head in embarrassment. Looking at how he was tucking into the food, she pushed a couple jell-o cups over to him, and pulled a bag of cookies out of her bag.

"This is actually the first time I've made it out here. It's so pretty though. I'll definitely make it out here again. I love the outdoors, but it's probably in my blood."

She took another bite of her own sandwich, finishing it off. After chewing and swallowing, she wadded up the wrapper and stuffed it back into her knapsack, before open up the bag of cookies. She took out two, and handed one to Datu.

"Take one of these, they're oreos, my favourite."

Datu looked at the oreos desiringly, and took it. "Mm, oreos! Thanks!" He took a bite out of his oreos, then a bite out of his sandwich. After swallowing, he smiled at Hawthorne.

"I like the outdoors too. But sometimes, I prefer the forest."

He took another bite out of his sandwich, finishing it off, then a bite out of the oreos. He looked at her again.

"Too bad winter season's coming up. But then again, that wouldn't be a problem for me."

Hawthorne eyed Datu's eating with admiration, and chuckled a bit over his excitement in relation to the oreos. He wasn't a big guy, but he could certainly eat! She filed the concept of a forest nearby in the back of her head, as she pushed the bag of oreos over to where Datu could reach it. She'd definitely want to check that out later. She'd prolly feel even more at home out there than out in the open meadow. Besides, it would be a nice place to go when she felt she needed somewhere to hide.

"Why isn't winter a problem for you?"

She was curious, there weren't many people she knew much about, and she was interested to know more about this fellow student of hers, who kept getting thrown into her path on the winds of fate.

Instead of replying to her answer in words, he replied in another way. He put his hands on the ground, and looked up at the wind. Suddenly, the wind became a nice, soothing warm temperature. He smiled, and looked back at Hawthorne.

"That's why." It was all coming back to him how he got this power. In the streets of the Phillippines, inside his 'house', if one would call it such a thing, where it took place...

Hawthorne's eyes widen in amazement. Datu's power seems so . . . superior to hers. With every person she meets here, she feels more and more . . . well, pathetic. She wished her powers were a little more impressive. She was never going to be able to compete here. She shook her head in mock disbelief and grabbed another Oreo.

"That's incredible Datu, I wish I had powers like that."

She felt close to this boy, whose history, she could feel, was very similar to hers. From what she'd read, conditions in the Philipines, where he'd told her he was from when they first met, weren't much better than on the reserves. She hated that people had to grow up in situations like that. It made her so angry!!!

Datu's smile, turned into a half-hearted one, and he looked down on the ground, frowning. It was ironic how she wished to have powers like that, he he didn't wish to have these powers.

"Sure, they may be incredible to have, but is it worth being rejected...?"

He thought back to when he was in the Phillippines, after the 'ceremony', he didn't feel as connected to his friends as he was before. They started to feel more distant from Datu, and eventually, hated him. But still, he was happy in the Phillippines....even if he had no home, no friends...he had his family. That was what kept him up when he was down. He smiled at this, and he looked up to the sky, thinking of what they're doing right now.

"Well, life has its ups and downs."

Hawthorne didn't understand, who would reject him for something like that? If her powers had been that useful, maybe her father would have loved her, maybe her ex wouldn't have wanted to hurt her. Still, it was his pain they were dealing with. So she tried to be lighthearted.

"You think that gets you rejected? Imagine, at any emotional peak, a dirty, mildewy stuffed animal appeared. See how rejected that gets you. And I mean any emotional peak."

She winked, and ate another cookie.

Datu smiled.

"Llamas? Llamas are cool." He took a cookie, and took a bite out of it. After swallowing, he looked back at Hawthorne.

"I warm up to any type of animal. I grew up with them." Well....almost any animal. He remembered his fear of poisonous bugs, and shuddered. Ehh...centipedes...black widows...ughh...

Hawthorne laughed out loud. He was just so . . . funny. She wasn't used to people like that. When she laughed her whole face changed, opened, brightened a bit. It made her look pretty for a moment. She grinned at Datu.

"Okay, llamas are cool. They are not cool when they fall out of the sky and land on your head while you're kissing someone though."

She laughed again. It felt so nice to just . . . relax with someone. She could definitely get used to this school. She didn't feel like she always had to be watching her back here.

Datu laughed as well. The situation lightened up a bit, to his relief. He had never seen her like this before. It was nice having conversations like this, especially while he feels down at the moment, questioning his existence.

"Well, they only land on your head when you don't look. When you see a llama right above your head, you get out the way!"

He smiled, and took another bite out of his cookie. Then, he had second thoughts about what he just said.

"Then again, it'll still ruin the moment.."

Hawthorne laughed again.

"No kidding. Luckily, I haven't had to worry about too many falling llamas since I got here. It's crazy, but this place is actually very soothing."

She looked thoughtfully at Datu for a minute. He seemed to be such a nice guy, and it looked like he had something on his mind. She wasn't sure if she knew him well enought to ask though.

"So, are you excited about classes starting soon? I know I am. It'll be nice to finally see what everyone was always talking about." She blushed a bit. "I've never attended a school before, y'know. IT's kinda cool, just thinking about all the people that'll be there. Do you know a lot of people here?"

Ack! She was babbling. She had to stop taqlking, now.

Datu looked down thoughtfully before replying. He then looked back up at Hawthorne.

"Not that many people. I'm still kinda new around here, one of my few good friends is Alastair....where has he been anyways?" He looked up at the sky, thinking of where Alastair has been. That idiot ditched me again...

Hawthorne was startled to hear the name Alastair. It wasn't common, not many people here had common names, so it was prolly the same person she had run into.

"I met an Alastair here, up on the roof. He was an amazing swordsman, a little strange though. He was supposed to meet me in the Quad, but . . ."

She shrugged. Things happened, and she was used to being blown off. Some people didn't have the time of day for a girl like her, she was used to it. Maybe if she had been born pretty, or clever, or brave, but that was not her fate. She was just . . . average, and timid. If she was lucky, she could find a few good friends here though. It seemed like Datu was really the type, too.

"Anyway, I know you and you know me. What year are you in?"

She might have asked him already, but she couldn't remember.

"Well, like I said, I just recently came here. I'm a freshman."

He looked down at the food, and scanned it as if looking for something. Datu then looked back at Hawthorne with a little curiosity in his eyes.

"Hey, did you bring any drinks?" There was a lot of food going down his throat, and he wanted to drink it all down.

Hawthorne grinned at Datu, fishing in her bag for a couple bottles of sodapop.

"Cool. We'll be in the same class then. I got 7Up, Diet Coke, and Root Beer. Pick your poison . . ."

She presented the bottles of soda to the boy with a flourish, taking a bottle of Diet Coke for her self. MMmmm. Aspartame. It had been awhile since she'd indulged in the bubbly stuff. She took a swig of her own drink, and turned her attention back to Datu.

"So, what do you think we do for fun around here? Besides study, and read and practise our powers, I mean." These prolly didn't sound like fun activities to a lot of people. "Like, do you think they throw parties and stuff? Or have movie nights?"

"Thanks!" Datu took the 7-Up, and opened the cap. After doing that, he drank it for a few seconds, then put it down. He then looked back at Hawthorne.

"Fun stuff? We do what normal people do. Sometimes, friends would go out to a movie, maybe throw a party here and there...yeah, this school's not as boring as you think."

He then remembered the floor party, hehe, yeah that was fun. He also thought back to when he was on the roof with Sakura, just kicking back and relaxing. Sigh...those were the good days..

Hawthorne laughed and drank more of her soda pop. Datu was such . . . a character really. He seemed to read intensity in everything she said. As if the whole world was a serious place. He was just so . . . vibrant. That was the word she was searching for.

"I didn't mean that this place was boring, it's just . . . since I've never been to a school before, I was wondering if it would be like the ones you read about, or see in movies." She grinned broadly. "Hopefully without the singing and dancing."

She screwed the cap back on her bottle and laid back on the blanket, staring up into the sky. She watched the clouds drift past, just enjoying the calmness of the day, and the comfort of cheerful company.

"When I was little, I used to imagine what it would be like to live on a cloud . . . like the Carebears. Did you ever see that show? I used to love it, watched it until I was way too old to do so. It seemed like such a great way to live . . ."
