Datu smiled. "I can't fly, my master took me to the clouds." He remembered the good times....damn war, its making him go mad! Well, right now's not the time to be brooding, right now's a time for fun.

"I bet I can still outrun you, though!" He said, teasing her. Datu was a fast runner, but he didn't know how fast Hawthorne can go. He remembered always having competitions with Alastair. Hehe, Alastair...friend and rival..

Another challenge! What was it with the boys at this school, was everything here a big lead-up to a race? She chuckled to herself, knowing Datu would prolly have no idea at all what was so funny to her.

"You think you can outrun me, do you? Well then . . . " She reached out and tapped his arm . . . "Tag! You're it!"

With that she took off running, she could start out fast at least, and she put her heart into it, bounding across the meadow with energy stolen from sodapop and cookies. This was gonna be fun, she hadn't played since before her baby sister died, but this was no time or place to dwell on such dark thoughts, she had a boy to outrun! She focused on her breathing, making sure that she was actually taking air in and out of her lungs. She laughed out loud, enjoying the moment.

Datu laughed before going after her. "Oh, so that's how it is??" he then started running after her, not going at full speed though. Where's the fun in that? He wanted to give her a little chance.

After a while of running, he suddenly jumped high up in the air, aided by the wind, he landed just right behind her. "I didn't say I could jump high! Tag! You're it!" He suddenly started running the opposite direction, not at full speed, that would be unfair. He laughed, he didn't have this much fun since competing with Alastair.

Hawthorne laughed out loud when Datu tagged her, he was so bad!! Her eyes glinted with good natured competitiveness as she skidded to a halt and switched directions, pursuing, rather than being pursued.

"Hah! You cheated!"

She made it clear in her tone that she was kidding, after all, what was healthy competition if you didn't at least grouse about the other person doing well. Her feet pounded against the grassy ground as she followed Datu as best as she possibly could, trying to gain on the boy, at the last second she put another little burst of speed and tagged him, zipping past as she did so, to take advantage of a hillside to build some momentum to her speed. Now this was what going away to school was all about!

As Datu was running, he suddenly lost balance, and tripped. "Crap!" he yelled, and was suddenly tagged. He looked up as he watched Hawthorne run down a hillside.

"Hey, get back here!!" he yelled as he laughed. He started running after her, and went at full speed as he went down the hill. Datu was able to catch up with her, and tagged her. "You're it!" he yelled, then ran back up the hill to see if he could outrun her by tiring her.

Hawthorne puffed, disappointed that he had caught up to her so soon, but that was okay, part of the game was the joy of the chase. She had only ever played tag a few times before, and she was enjoying it. She knew that she was too old for this kind of childish entertainment, but she was happy. She was also happy that she had done a bunch of running with Jun-Bo, because it was definitely teaching her how to breath, and had already increased her endurance a little bit.

She doggedly chased Datu up the hill, feeling a bit of pain in her knees. She wasn't used to this kind of activity. She made a mental note to get Jun to train her in hilly area next. She needed to be able to do this, especially if He ever showed up. Datu was going a lot faster now, and Hawthorne wasn't sure if she could catch up with him anymore, but it didn't matter. Maybe she could trick him . . . she liked that thought, and was busy brainstorming while she pursued the younger boy.

"Don't you worry! I'll catch you!"

"Oh, I don't think so!" Datu laughed as he was running back up the hill. By the time he was up the hill, he was out of breath from the run up the hill. Even so, he kept running at a steady pace to keep a good distance away from Hawthorne. He was breathing heavily, and chuckled to himself.

"I could control the air, yet I'm out of air right now..." heh, that's quite ironic. His pace began to slow down and Datu was trying to catch a breath.

"Oh, I don't think so!"

He was fast, very fast, and even as his pace began to slow, he was going faster than she was. She was nearly completely out of breath now, from the laughing, as much as the running. She made it to the top of the hill and just sprawled out on the ground, still giggling to herself.

"Okay," her voice was a little bit wheezy, "you win. I can't catch you. I give up."

"I could control the air, yet I'm out of air right now..."

He wasn't the only one out of air, she was definitely a bit breathless. Still, there was a healthy, happy flush across her face, and she was smiling so hard her cheeks were beginning to hurt. She wasn't used to that.

"You may be out of air," she called out, having only heard the last bit, "but I'm out of steam."

Datu laughed, and got up. After a few more moments of panting, he finally got his breath again. He looked at where Hawthorne's things are, not too far off from where they started running. Datu then looked back at Hawthorne.

"Hey, wanna call it a day?" he asked as he walked over towards her. Datu extended his hand towards her smilingly, offering to help her up. The sun was already setting, and he was tired.

Hawthorne pushed herself up to a seated position, and looked for her bag. Ahh, there it was. Apparently she had chased the other boy all the way back to the beginning. It had been awhile since she had had this much fun.

"Hey, wanna call it a day?"

She accepted the hand that Datu offered to her, pulling herself into an upright position. His hand was warm in hers, and she smiled in return. It was nice to play all day with a good friend, but she was definitely ready for bed.

"I definitely think heading in for the day would be a good idea, Datu."

Impulsively she flung her arms around him, giving him a quick hug. She let go and took a step back, blushing at her impetuous action.

"Thank you for a lovely afternoon."

"Yeah, I think--"

Datu was interrupted and was suddenly surprised as Hawthorne hugged him. After the hug, he blinked for a second, trying to recuperate from what just happened. He had never been hugged by a girl besides family, so this was rather surprising.

"Thank you for a lovely afternoon."

Datu smiled. "Hey, it's the least I could do for a friend who gave me lunch."

She had surprised him, and that made her smile. Frankly, Hawthorne had surprised herself. There was just something . . . sweet about Datu, he made you want to remember being a kid. It was like a playground romance kinda emotion, back when you couldn't tell the difference between like and like.

"Hey, it's the least I could do for a friend who gave me lunch."

Thorny smiled at him, and gave him a light shove. It was friendly, meant to be received in a teasing manner. She picked up her things, and headed back to campus.

"Don't be a stranger, my friend. I'd love to see you again, soon hopefully."

Datu smiled brightly, and pat her on the shoulder. "Don't worry. You won't get rid of me that easily." He then started to walk with her back to MHS. This afternoon turned out to be better than he thought. All he needed now was maybe some rest at the hot springs, and then sleep. Suddenly, he yawned. He shook his head, then continued walking.

"Ehh, what time is it?"

"Don't worry. You won't get rid of me that easily."

"Excellent, that's what I like to hear. It's nice to know that someone around here is gonna stick around for a little while at least."

They walked back in a companionable silence until Datu yawned hugely, which made her giggle. He looked so adorable when he stretched out like that.

"Ehh, what time is it?"

Hawthorne looked up at the sky, taking in their approximate position on the globe and the placement of the sun in the sky.

"I'm not quite sure, exactly. Maybe about five o'clock?"

Datu smiled with fatigue.

"That's great, I got time to relax at the hot springs..." He yawned yet again. Usually, when he uses a lot of energy, he gets tired. A dip in the hot springs sounded really nice right now...

"You want to come with me there?" he asked. He felt like talking to someone in the springs.

"That's great, I got time to relax at the hot springs..."

She remembered the last time she had been at the hot springs, and blushed. It had been an awkward experience to say the least. If Jun-Bo and Sakura hadn't shown up, it would have been much better.

"You want to come with me there?"

She was startled that he had offered for her to go with him. She wasn't used to having people just invite her along to places. Jun-Bo did, but he was different.

"I suppose I could do that, but I'd have to stop at my room to get my swimsuit and towel, if you don't mind?"

She knew that some people went to the hot springs naked, but she just wasn't that forward. She'd feel weird. That would just be . . . creepy.

Datu smiled. "Nah, don't mind. I have to do the same thing, as well."

As they were getting closer to the school, he yawned again. Datu scratched the top of his head, and was now leaning forward in fatigue.

"Hopefully, I won't fall asleep in the hot springs..." But then again, that's not that bad of an idea...

"Nah, don't mind. I have to do the same thing, as well."

Hawthorne grinned, watching the school approach. This would be a nice end to a nice day. She hoped she'd get to see more of Datu around, he was such a sweetie. You only found friends like him every once in a while, and she treasured it.

"Hopefully, I won't fall asleep in the hot springs

Thorny laughed aloud. It seemed to her that it was rather likely for that to occur. The boy could barely stay awake as it was. The girl with the piercings looked at her strange friend in concern.

"Are you gonna stay awake long enough to get into your swim trunks?"
