The Song of the Sibyl (open!)
Tick-tock. Tick-tock. Tick-tock.

The scene opens with a shot of clocks, ornate, beautiful things as well as mechanized hypertechnical clocks, displayed in a window. Every single one of them shows the exact same time, although on one of the digital clocks, the numbers on its black face glowing red, the seconds pour away as well. The image is refocused so that the reflection on the glass becomes more obvious, the shoulder of a girl, and then the line of the girl's hair, which is in a gold bun that drips down the back of her neck and unravells at the base. Then the profile of a girl becomes visible, as the camera pans away, and her blank expression as she glances at the clocks, and then shoves her hands into the pockets of her black (apparent) skirt. One of those long things, swishy around the ankles;

Do not go off school grounds until I tell you that you may, a voice over -- man's voice.

The scene changes again, to focus on her face; she's stands at a train station, and her head is slightly lowered. She's wearing a hat, black, and smoky sunglasses. A train goes by, speeds by, blocks any vision of her completely -- the camera has panned out fully now, so there's a view of downtown in all it's glory, and the train station in particular.

Then the camera pans in again, and she says, "Keep looking for the spirit hunter."
But, of course, she's alone.

People get off the train; people get back on. Not V. She snaps open her cellphone to glance at the time, and then looks up at the gate; cammoflauge.

Re: The Song of the Sibyl (open!)
Knives was wandering downtown that afternoon. He had a need for a job, especially with the possibility of a new girlfriend soon...after all, girlfriends tended to be expensive, on top of all of the expenses of normal, everyday life. Unfortunately, he had been unable to find anything interesting today. He didn't want to take up a boring, tedious, or difficult job; and it really didn't matter, he could go without for a bit longer anyways.

At the end of his search, the dog boy found himself on the opposite end of the city from the school. Fortunately, he had a good sense of direction...partly because of his dog half. He could find a shortcut really easily. And, as he made his way through alleys, public buildings, and whatever else he could legally travel through to make it to MHS faster, he soon found himself using the train station as one of his shortcuts.

And at just the right moment, too....

He walked straight past where V was sitting today, at the same time she was in the station. Furthermore, it was at the moment when everyone from the last train had wandered off, and everyone from the next was on board....so the gate was fairly empty at that moment, allowing both Knives and V to see each other fairly easily. Not that it was necessary; before he even saw her, Knives had been able to smell V's familiar scent. But, as he laid his deep blue eyes on the girl, a smile crossed his face; he would take a detour from his trip home to see a new friend.

As he approached the girl, he gave her his big, goofy (yet friendly) grin, revealing his long, sharp canines. "Hey there, I remember you from yesterday!"

Just before Knives speaks, V had turned her shoulder (and wind, kicked up, trails a lock of hair, twisting and gold, through the air; her skirt flares, too, in the direction) to walk further down the train station. Perhaps she'd missed him? At any rate, his voice recalls her, and V pushes the glasses up her nose. Behind the smoke of their lenses, the gold of her eyes is completely veiled; Knives can see a dim reflection of his sharp smile twinned and thrown back at him.

"Hi." A pause, cool. Then: "Knives, right? You recognized me?"

"Knives, right? You recognized me?"

Knives blinked, and nodded. They had just met the day before, so obviously he would recognize her. The fact that she was surprised seemed to tell him that she must not have recognized him. He tilted his head to the side; maybe he hadn't left a good enough impression? But he just shrugged it off, and gave her a bit of a laugh. "Yeah, of course I did!" He raised a hand to point to his head as he spoke the next sentence, "I always remember people." He gave her a big grin. "And you made a pretty good impression, anyways."

And then, he looked around the train station a moment. Suddenly, he was a bit curious. V did not have anyone with her, which led him to conclude that she was not waiting for anyone. Yet, she also had not gotten on a train, and seemed to be currently leaving. But she was around the evening before, when he had met her in the meadow...so obviously she hadn't just arrived.

Tilting his head to the side, looking a bit curious, he decided to ask her. "So...whatcha doin at a train station? Just cuttin through, like me?" He smiled, and raised both of his hands to place them on the back of his head.

"Ah." V is a perceptive girl, and she can tell (or can she?) that Knives took her the wrong way. But she's much too proud a creature to apologize for something so trivial. He seems fine with it. "I was just looking for somebody. Who doesn't seem to be around." The train station empties until it's nothing but great swathes of shadow and light; this could be a French film now. All aesthetics. "Are you going back to the school?"

"I was just looking for somebody. Who doesn't seem to be around."
Knives nodded. In response to this, his eyes drifted around the station once more. It looked as if he was searching for the person she was looking for, even though he didn't know who it was. Rather, it was just a quick glance around, a sort of automated response to such a comment. Once his eyes were back upon her, he frowned slightly. "Aww, you couldn't find your friend?" He frowned a bit. "Poor V...maybe you just missed em?"

"Are you going back to the school?"
He smiled, and nodded. "Yeah, I am. You wanna walk back with me? I think I'm finding a short cut!" His smile grew into a very big, pleased grin. He obviously seemed a bit proud of himself for his accomplishment. But rather than an arrogant boy, he actually looked more like a pet dog, who'd just accomplished something good he'd been told to do.

"Maybe." Brief pause. This happens with V quite often; people who know her get used to it. Her attention doesn't seem to waver, but, still, there's the momentary inattention - or rather, attention halved. Then she nods, once; so serious eyed. "I'll walk with you for a little while."

And she'll wait for Knives to either show the way or fall into step with her, before, the black skirt swishing (a skirt, cut into pants, actually) around her ankles, all a-swirl. She hikes up the strap of a plain, serviceable purple backpack, roses embroidered all over it in white.

"Did you sleep well?" A dazzler at conversation, she is not; brief moment of awkwardness, although she half-conceals it under this air of noblesse oblige -- manners.

"I'll walk with you for a little while."
He smiled wide, and gave her a big nod. "Great! I'd love company on the way back!" She began to walk, and he did so beside her. It wasn't hard to fall into step beside her, matching her pace. yet he tried to remain just a half-step in front of her; he would try to lead the way, to guide the girl along the path to the school...one he didn't quite know himself, but so far had guessed pretty well.

As he walked, he slipped his hands into the pockets of his khaki shorts - which he seemed to have so many pairs of, since he wore nearly identical pairs each day. He seemed very comfortable, very casual, as they moved along down the walkway, through the train station, towards its exit.

"Did you sleep well?" He laughed and shot her his big grin, nodding happily. "Yup! I'm a heavy sleeper. I don't think I've had problems sleeping for years." He shrugged, and then asked her the same thing. "What about you?" He tilted his head, giving her his usual, dog-like look of curiosity. "And on that note, how's your day been goin?"

Re: The Song of the Sibyl (open)

They pass the clock store, again. And V doesn't glance inside, this time. Indeed, their reflections are ghosts skating across the glass; broken when they pass the clock shop and are framed by a cement stoop, planters on other side of its door, a black-painted wood and glass door, and then by a brick wall and then a corkboard with public notices fluttering on it, and then a bum, swaddled in all of the clothing he owns, just his nose poking out; almost not a person.

"Did you used to?" He said for years, which implies that there was a time before, when he did have problems.

Then, V adjusts the brim of her hat; it's not a twitchy gesture, being graceful and slow as it is, but it is a sign of nerves. Recognizable. She'd have to cut her hair (shudder) or dye it to truly pass unrecognized. They walk past a climbing ivy plant, and another train rushes by. See them between the cars, their images like a film reel -- clicky clacky clicky clacky.

"My day has been -- " And then she turns her head, sharply. Turns all the way around. "I see him. I'll be right back!"

"Did you used to?"
Knives blinked at the question. Apparently, she'd taken his words a different way, to have some sort of hidden meaning. He hadn't meant it that way, but he understood immediately what she was getting at. And when he did, he laughed a little, before turning to look at her. He gave her a shrug. "Nahh, not really. I mean...I guess as a child there were nights, but...nothin outta the ordinary..."

As they walked, Knives didn't even notice the sights. After all, it was simply the norm in downtown...and most students at MHS had to come downtown for some reason. So he'd seen it all before, and had grown accustomed to it. So, he just walked on down the sidewalk, beside V, simply talking.

The train rolled by, but again, Knives paid it no heed. He'd heard it coming from a mile off, and though it was loud, and the wind blew his clothes and long, curly brown hair, he didn't even care to look up at it.

"I see him. I'll be right back!" He blinked as he watched her run off. For a moment, he stood there, confused; and the look on his face showed it. Then, with a frown, he turned and chased after her. "You see who?!" He shouted, hopefully gaining on her with his amazing speed.

Re: The Song of the Sibyl (open)
Knives stood, stupefied and befuddled and alone, in the same spot for so long that he has a ways to travel before he catches up to V. The teenager's glance had been directed toward an immense cement building, with the look of a place which would have been torn down ages ago, if only it hadn't been old. Knives catches up to her just as she steps into the shadows surrounding its entrance, and its spinning doors.

With one hand she reaches out to catch the sleeve of a Japanese man, his jaw square, his hair streaked in gray, and as tall and thin as a skeleton that is tall. He looks back, over his shoulder, and his look glances off V, and hits Knives instead. Then the spinning door turns, and he's in another segment, and V's in another segment, and the other segment is about to close on Knives. He can jump ahead and be in V's, risk ripping his pants; or he can go on his own. The only thing for certain is he's definitely going inside the building.

Re: The Song of the Sibyl (open)
Knives caught up to her, and slowed down to fall into step with V. He doesn't seem to be straining at all to keep up his pace....he doesn't need to stop and rest, his limbs don't ache, and though he's panting - tongue hanging out, reminiscent of a dog - he doesn't seem to be very much out of breath. In fact, Knives could probably keep this up for a while longer; he has a lot of stamina and endurance, which help him not to tire easily.

And now, he saw the man. He'd been able to smell him from far off, and had picked up on the fact that that scent was the one they were following when it remained with them no matter how far they went. But when his eyes fell upon him, it was different than smelling him....now he could actually see what they were after. The dog boy locked his deep blue eyes into the cold stare of the other man for a moment, before realizing what was going on.

He had to get into the building; the others were already going. But they were in the segments of the revolving door ahead of him, and it was moving too slow for his liking. Without thinking - he assumed if he'd gotten into a segment of his own, he might get left behind - he moved to slip into V's segment. He turned sideways and slid through, his body wedging tightly between the door and the wall. He barely made it, just seconds before getting painfully smashed up against the wall. But it was not without a price... The door caught onto is shorts, pinning it against the wall. He turned and looked down at it, and then exclaimed, "Shit! I'm stuck!" He tugged with his leg, trying to slip it free....and only succeeded in leaving a large hole, through which one could see part of his boxers. Not that he really cared; the hole didn't reveal anything personal, and he had other shorts at home.

As he walked around the circle with V, he glanced over at her. "Who is he? And...why are we chasing him...?"

Re: The Song of the Sibyl (open)
V twists around when Knives leaps into her segment of the revolving door, and the glass reflects him; he's all big smiles and panting tongue, until his expression pinches closed because his shorts are stuck. The revolving doors stick for a moment, and V offers Knives her hand; she'll pull him. As she does so, she turns to look through the glass into the segment the man she took off after was in; it, too, is stuck, but there's enough room for him to get out. And he flicks a look back at V, then at Knives; his eyes narrow, and then he walks through the small gap. When Knives tugs himself free, the doors give a sudden lurch; the glass rushes up to sweep V and Knives out. And out they will go, into a small lobby, very 1930's and very tawdry and shopworn.

Of course, the man is nowhere to be seen. Smelled, however; well, perhaps.

The teenage girl twists a straying lock of hair, which escapes from her loosening bun, back behind her ear. Medieval hairstyles, la! Says, in that quiet, assured voice she has, although there's a break of frustration behind it, difficult to discern but there:

"That was stupid. I'm sorry. He," a hesitation, "has something that I need. That I want to buy. But he doesn't like people very much."

Re: The Song of the Sibyl (open)
Knives stumbled forward, out of the revolving doors, and fell onto the ground. His hands hit the hard ground, preventing harm to his chest or face but causing a bit of pain in his palms. He was rather clumsy in most circumstances, after all. But just as soon as he'd fallen, he stood up again, ready to chase after the man....only to find him nowhere around.

He turned his head again to let his eyes settle on V once again. There was a frown on his face, letting her know that he was frustrated for her. After all, this man seemed very important; the girl who had seemed calm the entire rest of the time he'd been with her had actually chased him down. There must have been a reason behind it...

"That was stupid. I'm sorry. He......has something that I need. That I want to buy. But he doesn't like people very much."
Knives blinked, and shook his head. Then, he put on his grin in place of the frown, and laughed a little. "Nahh, that wasn't stupid. You want somethin? Let's go get it!" He smiled, and looked around the area. He didn't see anything; and he didn't expect to either. Then, he tilted his head back, and closed his eyes, inhaling deeply.

He remembered the scent from before. He'd been able to smell the man, and had actually realized that they were following a specific scent back during the chase...so it was no problem now for his dog nose to pick out the smell of the man from the many others in the room. After he'd gotten a good whiff, he opened his eyes again, and grinned at V. "Alright, let's go look for this guy!"

With that, he ran off in the direction of the scent, sniffing the air to keep on track.

The dog boy grins. Alright, let's go look for this guy. And he runs off.

V tarries behind a moment. Her expression is inscrutable, but stern; her lashes sink to kiss her cheekbones, and she takes a quiet breath. Breathes out, too quietly to carry: "What kind of person is he?"

Meanwhile: Knives can smell the man. He's got a distinct scent, and a cold one, if smells can be said to be cold. Brimstone on ice. He can also smell an iron tang to the air, as of old blood. But the lobby seems clean; so does the hall he runs into. The man's scent brings Knives right to the elevator. Above its doors, there are numbers; the number six lights up. Then the glow leaves it. Moments later, V (who hadn't been able to keep up with Knives)'s presence is signalled by the fall of her foot. Boot against pavement. Clack.

She's looking around, alert. Her shades still conceal her eyes, like a sheath conceals a knife...

Re: The Song of the Sibyl (open)
Knives reached the elevator, and frowned as he stared at the closed doors. Then, as the sound of V's footsteps tell him that she's behind him, the dog boy turns to look at her too, tilting his head to the side. Obviously, they'd been stalled; the man had made it to the elevator first. And the look in Knives's eyes showed his disappointment.

"Uhhhm...he's gotten away. We could try to catch him going up the stairs, and hope we're fast enough..." Knives turns to look around the hall, searching quickly for the nearest staircase. Fortunately, there is a door leading to a stairwell only a few feet down the hall. Knives points at it, looking back at V. "Or, we could wait for the elevator to return, and hope that doesn't take longer than the stairs would..." He shrugged.

He gave her the choice. If it were up to him in this situation, he'd choose the stairs. His lazy side told him the elevator was the better option, and that side would have won under most any other circumstances. But now was a time for speed, not laziness. He also knew that V was not as fast as him...maybe she would prefer the elevator? So, he let her make the decision...

Concise, V nods after Knives speaks. Her smoky glasses reflect his face, twinned. She's already turning toward the stairs when she speaks. Her voice isn't panicked. Steady, and intent. "The stairs will be faster. You can -- smell him?"

"The stairs will be faster. You can -- smell him?"
Knives nodded, smirking. Ever since he'd gotten his powers, one of the things Knives had been most proud of was his sense of smell. He gave V a bit of a laugh, and responded, "Yup! I'm like a dog!" Then, he turned to look down the hallway, his eyes settling on the doorway into the stairwell. With a nod, he spoke to V again. "Alright, then let's get going."

And then, he began to run towards the stairs. he pulled open the door, and held it just long enough for V to get through. As she stepped through the doorway, he let go of the door, so that it swung back into the closed position behind her. He proceeded to run up the stairs, taking two at a time at first. But he quickly realized that they were more of a hindrance than anything, and stopped at one of the platforms, where one could get off onto a floor. He scratched his head a moment, as he looked up the flight of stairs above him.

"Uhhhm....I'm not sure how many floors he went up. I can make this up faster if I jump instead of run, can you keep up with that?" He frowned a moment, as he turned to look at her. If it was a girl he knew better, he'd offer for them to ride on his back as he leapt up the stairs; but he didn't know V very well, and wouldn't know how she would respond to the physical contact of him carrying her....not to mention, she seemed like the independent type, who wouldn't let him help her in such a way.

And just as his last thought crosses his mind, something. Not sure exactly what it is, but there is something, and it's not right. Mayhaps its that sixth sense that canines tend to have, or it's just a gut feeling. Yet he knows, can't help but feel it. There is something on this floor. Almost as though it has a scent, but there is no scent. None from what ever it is. Even then, whatever it is, it is something to make a dog growl and not know why, the hair to stand up on your neck, a cat to hiss. There is something here, no doubting it, but what is the question, and does he want to check this floor, or is the man on the next?

She was running behind him, and no, they're not exactly equal, but V isn't slow, at least.

When he stops so suddenly on the platform (and there's something on this floor, something that causes hair to bristle, lips to curl back and show gums, if you're a dog or a cat or an animal), V stops too, a few stairs up -- going toward the next level.

"No," she answers, honestly. "But I won't lose you. Go ahead."

Re: Th Song of the Sibyl (open)
The strange feeling did come; but Knives wasn't just a dog. He was more than that....his father was from a proud race of dog-like creatures, intelligent, not succumbing to their basic instincts. Plus, Knives had a human half as well, which (most of the time) could suppress the animal within him. So, he ignored the feeling, not even taking a glance at the door that led to the rest of this floor.

"No...But I won't lose you. Go ahead." He frowned, and nodded. It would be more difficult if she lost sight of him. But if he didn't make it up there in time, the man might get away...and then whatever V wanted from him would not be gained again. So, he sighed, nodded, and shrugged to her, turning towards the stairs once again. He wanted to get off of this floor, and away from that strange feeling quickly, too.

He kicked off from the ground, thrusting out with his legs to send his body flying through the air. He skipped a whole flight of stairs, and was on the landing for the next floor in seconds. And he didn't hesitate, only leapt more, further, up the next flight - and the next, and the next. It was next to no time before he reached the floor of their destination. His hand reached out, and he pulled the door open, before waiting for V to show up behind him.
