Last watch
Sangraal gets up from the fire and offers Meneloss his prime spot by the fire and unloads blood stained clothing from his pack.
"My feet are warm and Draxim reminds me that there is wash to be done." Gathering up the clothing Sangraal heads towards the sound of splashing water just outside the kitchen.
"Cold water you say? bbbbrr it is cold. How does freezing cold water prevent the stain of blood? This'll never get clean... can I borrow a pumice stone?"

Re: Reunion at Grugni's House
Grugni hops out of the kitchen, agitated. "Ah, ya foolish boy. Don't be staining my water with that blood. Take it to the sea and rinse it there, though I doubt you'll have much luck. The stains are set."

To the Sea
"Draxim, care to go to the sea to try and clean the clothes? Also I'd to take the last watch and greet Yelm with the rising dawn"
Picking up a dagger Sangraal slides it into its sheath.
"Protection, just in case. Draxim you coming, I have no wish to clean clothing in the dark, lets make haste."

Re: Reunion at Grugni's House
[carefull Sangraal, Meneloss can't bring down the sun and neither can you:D I think it is still afternoonish8o ]

Meneloss wastes no time in grabbing the prime fireside spot offered by Sangraal. The warmth of the fire and theh long days march have a drowsing effect upon him. He tunes out the Moagari conversation and nods off in and out of consciousness.

The Tale of the Gorgon
Before Madragar can do as Meneloss suggested and relay the tale of the flight from Dobrug, the party explodes in a flurry of domestic and lavatory exertion. The tattooed mage therefore restrains from telling his tale until the various laundry tasks have been accomplished and the party is once again gathered in Grugni's main room.

"Earlier, Meneloss suggested that I tell the tale of our departure from the city of Dobrug. For safety's sake, I spoke not of this amidst strangers. But as it has been spoken, I will now tell it in full. I doubt that it has any immediate significance, but as association with me may carry dangerous consequences, you should hear the reasons thereof."

"My master was Edrigan the Golden, Magus of the Wood, who was both erudite and puissant beyond the measure of most mortals. In his Tower of the Mist I passed more than fifteen summers and learned what arts I have serving at his side. Last summer something befell the great man when he was abroad and I alone at the Tower. Even in his extremity, he was able to send word to me, but one word alone, and that was 'Flee'."

"Almost coincident with this admonition, the Tower was violated by that most vile and dread sorcerer, the Gorgon. By some stroke, he had knowledge of my master's fate, or more likely, was the author of his distress, and he had come to seize all that lay within the Tower of the Mist."

"Vala and I fled, for she was visiting the Tower that day, and we escaped with nothing but the clothes upon our backs. For a year we lived in Dobrug, performing mean labor for our support. Then, just days ago, the same day I met Meneloss, he and I were accosted in a public space by Druuga, a boorish thug in the employ of the Gorgon, and known to me from the days when Edrigan and the Gorgon would negotiate the trade of their arcane mysteries."

"The Gorgon, it seems, though he possesses all that my master once held, desires still to possess me as well. I do not know the reason for his desire, nor do I wish to know it, if in knowing I must enter into his terrible presence. Druuga was most insistent, and it was alone by the fortuitous arrival of a noble knight that we two escaped with our lives. And now we are travelers, and those that travel with me remain in peril."

"I therefore suggest that when we here have satisfied our curiosities about that which lies below the tower, you gentlemen go your way while Vala and I go ours. It would be unwise to stray between the Gorgon and his prey."

Re: Reunion at Grugni's House
Gradually everyone settles in to their chores, their dinner, and then their rest.

[Feel free to continue these discussions. Since Vala and Grugni know little of either group's adventures both are keen to hear all about them. Over the course of the evening as each tale is retold from a different perspective, and details are revisited, everyone in the house gets a good idea of everything that has happened over the past day. I have removed the passwords on both the Under the Tower and Hunting Broo threads.]

Tower plan
[ooc I read the Under the Tower thread. Draxim the brave:) ]

After hearing and rehearing the tales of the subterranean explorers, Meneloss has a few things to ask: "I am not understand why the slimey beast dies. When you leaves the first time, it lives. Then it is finded like a dried lump. Why?" He goes on to Madragar: "I have idea why your charms were not working. Is possible the loud makes you lose ...err how do you say?...Oquent ...study?...no... concentrate! Yes you lose concenrate when the loud comes. Maybe if you ready for it, you not lose concentrate."

Re: Reunion at Grugni's House
"The beast died because we applied to it a great quantity of fire," replies Madragar, "whereas previously we were able to do little more than jab it with our smoky brands."

"As for the concentration, no, I am able to function under an enchantment quite well, so long as that enchantment is laid prior to entering the temple. Any attempt to use the art while in the temple has proved problematic, however."

Re: Tower plan
"Yes but, I still do not understand why the beast was sleeping when you put the big fire to it." retorts Meneloss. He also suggests to Atan in Elven; "I think a watch should be set upon the tower tonight, lest the Elk head returns, or others of its ilk. Grugni's dogs should keep the house safe enough. There are plenty of us here to make a watch so that all can rest, while the tower is under guard."

Re: Reunion at Grugni's House
"That is a prudent thought, though I doubt the broo will return. I believe their goal in coming was to release the chaos beast. Something like an unwholesome religious devotion, perhaps."

"As for the 'sleep' of the beast, I cannot declare with certainty, but it is my hypothesis that it had entered a state not unlike the hibernation of certain beasts of the natural world. It is likely that this was its natural response to the injuries we had caused it with our torches and the flaming remains of Draxim's bedroll. If we had not destroyed it, I believe that it would have regenerated itself in time, through the uncertain medium of its chaotic nature."

Re: Tower plan
"Madragar ,I know of Edrigan the Gold. A brave resourceful wizard stout in heart. He worked often with the Merek Lek until last summer whne he mysteriously disappeared.. We wondered what happened. A link between this Gorgon and the increased presence of chaos maybe? I think we should pay a visit to this Tower of Mist."

Re: Reunion at Grugni's House
Vala nearly shoots wine out of her nose at Atan's last comment. Turning red and coughing, her eyes go wide. Vala gives Madragar a look that says "Is this guy nuts?"

Kezib looks at the group and says "I have a question. Who or what is the Gorgon? Obviously this is something of some power, but maybe I was in a silent prayer to Yelm when this Gorgon was explained"

Re: Reunion at Grugni's House
Atan is not mad, thinks Madragar, but ill-informed and perilously brave.

"He is a sorcerer of great peril, Kezib" says Madragar seriously. "It is said that he acquired his name because the terror of his wrath can root strong men in place as surely as the gaze of a gorgon. My master once hinted that there was more to the name than this, however."

"And Atan, the Gorgon's servants alone would be more than sufficient to sweep all this company before them like leaves before a summer storm. I recognize the valor of your heart, but you do not know whereof you speak, my friend. To approach my master's citadel would be deadly folly even were no wizard in residence; it has defenses of it's own. But the Gorgon...no. He is such as makes the great sleep uneasy."

"I shall stand before him one day, and demand retribution for his crimes. But that day is not near. I shall grow in strength and readiness first."

Re: Tower plan
The evening passes slowly. The laundry team returns without much to show for their efforts. The blood on their garments is firmly set into the fabric. The sun sets in a lifeless gray sky.

[Posting guards, on the house or tower?]

Path Ahead
"Well Madragar, I am not sure what it seems our next step is. Yimris and I should return to the Nral Valley but we both feel that something is not yet done. The group was offered employment guarding the Hrulru for the village Werthyn. A little bit of money would be nice, especially to repay Grugni. She has gone well beyond that expected of a host."
Atan stretchs his arms above his ahead and stands. Walking over to the fire he grabs the poker and stirs increased vigor from the flame. Resetting the poker in its place he picks a nice log and sets it into the fire.
"I think finding what happened to Edrigan will do the most good in the long run. His disappearance and the increased activites of Chaos are linked and Gorgon is sure to be the answer. But.......winding up dead is not high on my agenda and will do the least good. But as my father would say, "A step a day will get you there, eventually." So lets start small. The Broo leader was the one with the mission and he left....its been at least 24 hours since he abandoned the others. Following his flight might lead us to other things Chaotic. With the dwarves though we will be slow afoot. But that maybe the most profitable route if fighting Chaos is what we seek."
Atan by now has wandered back over to the table and has seated himself again, head bowed as if deep in thought.

Re: Reunion at Grugni's House
An hour or so after sunset the conversation turns to what should be done about the tower, and whether guards should be posted. While there are varying opinions on these subjects it is clear that no one is taking any chances - all are eating well, drinking heartily and enjoying the warmth of the house in case the night sees them camped under the stars.

Somewhere in the distance the low rumble of thunder can be heard and at first it is merely mentioned by those with an ear for the weather. It isn't long, however, before Atan and Yimris rise and go to the window, each staring southward as if their sight could lend aid to their hearing. The silence of the two woodsmen catches the attention of the others, one by one, and the conversation ceases.

The pops and whistles of the fireplace are all that compete with the thunder, but by the expressions on their faces it is clear that everyone suspects that it is not thunder at all. There are occasional booming sounds, not unlike thunder, but these are intermixed with sharp cracks, like the distinct percussion made by rocks dropped from a great height onto other rocks. This continues for several minutes before fading away into the night.

"Beyond the forest," Yimris whispers.

Atan nods in agreement. "To the mountains at least."

Re: Path Ahead
"Well, fellas, looks like we wont be getting much sleep tonight. If we are, we should start now. If what you say is far off yet, we might want to try to get some rest at least. I will stand guard first, for a couple of hours then someone can relieve me and I shall try for rest.
Does anyone know what this noise is and where it comes from?"
Kezib looks at each in this band.
"Not much to look at" Kezib thinks to himself, "but stout hearts."
Kezib says a silent prayer to Yelm, asking for protection to each of the people in the room.

Re: Reunion at Grugni's House
Madragar moves to the window and looks out uneasily, not knowing what to expect. "What do you make of the sounds amidst the thunder?" he asks of the woodmen.

Not so delicate sounds of thunder
Yimris looks thoughtful before saying, "I can only think of bad things that could make a sound so close to thunder. Giants, siege engines or a large rock slide all seem possible."

"I suggest that we check it out tomorrow. It looks like the tower has been taken care of in our absence, so perhaps it would be best to get a full nights sleep instead of setting up a dual watch of the house and the tower."
