Re: The Village of Werthyn
"Thank you." Atan stays by the brazier and begins talking in low tones with Yimris.

Re: The Village of Werthyn
It isn't long before Nrulias returns and leads the group toward the longhouse. Passing by the bonfire circle you can see that the three kneeling supplicants before the fire are women, young girls in fact. They are dressed in simple biege frocks, and stare into the roaring blaze with their hands in their laps, intoning a silent prayer. No one else in the village seems to be paying them much attention, and they are totally absorbed in their ritual.
The high roofed long house opens directly onto the bonfire clearing and is nearly perpendicular to the road that runs east-west through the village. The interior of the place is alive with activity lit by the flickering orange glow of several brazier-borne fires. Several long tables are spread about the exterior of the place and there are a number of animal skins and simple tapestries hanging on the walls. To one side several large casks of ale are set on wooden stands, and a group of young men seem to be sampling it heartily.
None of the tables are completely empty, but the ones near the far end of the longhouse are particularly crowded. Perhaps twenty men of all ages, and a few women, are gathered around a sort of chair with large handles on each side, such that it could be easily carried. Within the large chair, which is covered in gleaming white sheepskins, is a diminuitive, almost shrunken, figure. It is a woman, and by the looks of her she is very old (at least 60! *gasp*). Her hair is white and thin, her face wrinkled and weather worn from years of the hard toil as a peasant farmer. Her garments are simple, but bear motes of ornamentation here and there: a bronze broach, a silver ring.
The crowd seems enthralled by her as she gently gesticulates and speaks to the gathering. Her smile is warm and she seems to elicit a sort of calm reverence from everyone around her.
Nrulias stops the group at the door.
"You've come at a good time. The harvest is coming and everyone is taking their share of celebration. Fill your mugs, if you have them," Nrulias gestures toward the kegs. "I'll see if I can get an audience with Hegi."

Re: The Village of Werthyn
Sangraal sheepishly pats his pack and pockets relizing that he indeed does'nt have a mug. Returning to the archway leading to the outside, Sangraal watches the young women praying at the fire. Leaning lightly on the archframe he ponders their actions trying desperatly to remember any teachings or texts learned at the Cloister in Dobrug. Sangraal was never a star student but he was never a bad student either. His inner sense of purpose had always defined his actions and he had descided along time ago that if he was'nt good at something, it just ment he was'nt trying hard enough.
Pulling his woolen cloak around him to guard against the cold night air, his lips begin moving absently, as he mentally recites a canticle learned by rote many years ago.
[Religon check on the ladies praying at the fire, taking 20. So Sangraal will watch them for a bit.]

Re: The Village of Werthyn
Meneloss gently grabs Nrulias before he heads off. "Please, we are hungry. We can pay for foods. Is not good to talk immportantly on empty belly. We have only our road (Meneloss pantomimes bowls with his hands) err plates and water skins. Are there spares? WE can share what you have." He bows slightly
[Meneloss wonders at the shyness of Ruglan, but considering the two have only just met he forgives the young human]

Nrulias nods. "Ah, I understand. Have a seat and I'll have something brought to you."

Yimris says, "Thank you, we realize that you likely have little food to spare, so if there is anything we can do in return we would be happy to."

The villagers start to look at you funny... just standing there with your weapons and your bloodstained clothes.

Ruglan sits down at the nearest table. Motioning to Meneloss he says, "Come, Elf friend, I will tell you some stories about watching the East Gate in Dobrug while we eat."

Re: The Village of Werthyn
Meneloss looks at the villagers staring and then looks down. He sits next to Ruglan and puts an arm on his shoulder and says: "Tells to me these stories. But my mouth will be filled so I cannot tells you some story. I am hungry so bad, listen to my belly!" Meneloss' stomach makes a growl and he laughs heartily.
Listening and nodding to Ruglan, Meneloss removes his armor, while waiting for the food to come. He rolls the pieces in a neat bundle. placing his sword in the center.
[are there bowls of water? As soon as he gets a chance, Meneloss will wash his hands and face.]

Re: The Village of Werthyn
Nrulias seems to have told the right people of your needs for a young man in a stained tunic is already on the way over with a large bowl of something hot. It looks like you may have some time to wait before having an audience with the old woman for Nrulias is standing respectfully beside her, obviously not wanting to interupt the matriarch's tale.

Re: The Village of Werthyn
A large bowl of hot stew arrives. It is mostly vegetables but the warmth returns the strength to your limbs after such a hard day. The young man that brings the bowl notices your embarassing lack of crockery and fetches a simple wooden mug for each of you, as well as a shallow bowl and wooden spoon.
Meneloss looks around for somewhere to wash up, but finds nothing. These people are filthy and don't seem to care. It's possible there is a well somewhere outside but Meneloss didn't notice it on the way in.
Sangraal stands near the Hegi, the village matriarch, and listens to what remains of her tale.

Yimris nods his thanks to the old man, selects a spoon, bowl and much grabs some food and water (if he can find it) and starts showing down.

Re: The Village of Werthyn
Meneloss looks at his filthy hands and over at the bowl of stew. Hunger wins out over his fastidiousness and he fills his bowl. He also gets a mug and offers to get beers for any who wish. With his hands full he goes over to the keg and waits his turn to fill the mugs.
Meneloss avoids contact and conversation with anyone at the keg, fills up the mugs and returns to his food and Ruglan's story.

Re: The Village of Werthyn
The young men at the keg give Meneloss a wide berth, simply staring as he fills his mugs.
Returning to the table, Meneloss, Ruglan, Yimris and Atan share a hot meal and some welcome (though low quality) ale.
Sangraal somehow manages to hold off his hunger long enough to absorb what Hegi is saying to the congregation. [Note to Sangraal.]

Matriarch
Politly waiting for the Matriarch to finish, Sangraal stands silently. Looking very out of place is his armor, his weapon at his side amoungest the villagers. Holding his helm in his gauntleted hand, he nervously picks at the adorning plume.
"May you walk in the light Mother." He begins as her story comes to an end, that is till being awkwardly interrupted by the growling of his stomach.
Sangraal rarely interacted with the women who visited or resided at the Cloister, having always considered girls a distraction to his studies. Speaking with them he found himself always taking the most proper tone and respectful title. A safe course of action that rarely backfired but left him looking stiff and to women, unremarkable.
"Who is Chalana Arroy?" He asked in the respectful voice of a child questioning a parent for the first time. The beguiling serenity and wisdom that flowed from the matriarch and her story sweeping him back to a childhood long forgotten.

Re: Matriarch
From the Light Bringers section of the World topic
Then came Chalana Arroy, the Goddess of Fertility, taking from Yelm the act of creation of Life, though she could not influence that Life once it was born.
