Re: The Tower
As Madragar loads another bolt, Kezib steps around Ruig and kicks the thing in the chest. More sounds of rib cracking can be heard and the shadowy shape begins to shrink.
In a sudden burst of speed the creature leaps into the air and rushes at Madragar from above. Leaving a long trail of inky blackness in its wake, the thing hurls itself toward the wizard with its arms outstretched, seeking his throat with cadaverous claws.
Madragar nearly falls backward with surprise at the sudden attack and reflexively fires his crossbow. Miraculously, the bolt speeds straight to its target and catches the creature on the bridge of its nose. Bits of bone matter blow through the thing's skull and follow the bolt out the other side. The whole rotting mass falls in a heap at Madragar's feet while an inhuman scream fades away into the shadows. The unnatural darkness that animated the corpse is gone.
Draxim reaches the door to the tower and hurls himself through it, landing on the wet hillside. Panting he rises, forgetting completely why he ran away from the cave.

Re: The Tower
Dropping his crossbow and scrambling backwards with an inarticulate cry, Madragar drips sweat from the terror of the chaos-creature's mad rush. His wild eyes take a moment to focus on anything but the dessicated husk that lays before him as he gulps in prodigious lungfuls of air.
Then, as the hammering of his heart slows, he picks up the bow again and methodically reloads it while considering the scene.
"Is everyone alright?" he asks.

Re: The Tower
Ruig grips his warhammer tightly while peering into the darkness.
"Not a scratch, though I'm not convinced the thing has abandonded this place completely. I believe it was an actual Shadow... albeit a weak one."

Re: The Tower
"What in all the deeps am I doing out here?! I've got to save them! " Draxim barrels back in to the tower hell bent on saving his companions from the horrible Madzul. He arrives with his morning star swinging and a war cry. "Urox! Aya Famaladzulk!"

Re: The Tower
Kezib scratches his head, the hair growing back from the last shaving, looks around in complete shock. Never seeing anything like that before, Kezib waits before saying anything as to not look like a coward.
"Uh, you hear the ribs crack? Reminds me of in the days back in the monestary cracking the kindling for the fire" Kezib says, to no one in particular. Entering back into the present time, "Yeah, Im fine, just a little shock at the way that thing just shot out at you Madragar, you ok?

Re: The Tower
"I may require a change of underclothes, but beyond that, I am unharmed. Let us have a look about, now."
And he does that, warily inspecting the chamber.

Re: The Tower
The cave ends not much farther to the south as it turns into rounded alcove. Besides the two barrels that were visible when the party entered the chamber, three more barrels are found in the alcove. All are identical: stout oak barrels reinforced with thick iron bands. The lid is held shut by a pair of iron chains that are threaded through loops set in the bands.

Re: The Tower
Are there any markings on the barrels, the locks, the chains or the walls nearby?

Re: The Tower
None. The barrels look to be simple, if very sturdy.

Re: The Tower
Ruig shrugs. "I've never seen anything like them."
Draxim looks over one of the barrels, seeking some way to open it. Both chains appear to be attached firmly to the iron loops... at least at first glance. Each chain is securely fastened at one end, but at the other end the last link in the chain seems thinner than the rest, and has a slight gap in it. Draxim tests the link and determines that the final link would have to be bent significantly in order to loosen the chain.

Re: The Tower
"Two possibilities exist, so far as I can see," says Madragar thoughtfully. "We know that the broo sought something here. Either they found it and took it away, or it is still here. If still here, it must be in those barrels."
"I believe we ought to open them. One at a time, of course. And it might not hurt to wait until tomorrow, when I can be prepared with new incantations."

Re: The Tower
"Fair enough. I could cast protections, however, and enter only afterwards. But honestly, the rush of that creature had made me forget the curious effect this place has on magic. Perhaps we should open the barrels now, then?"

Re: The Tower
Draxim removes the small canvas satchell that he carries with him, and unrolls it revealing and array of well made, but not fancy tools. They seem smallish and more designed for precision work than anything as large as the chain on the barrels. "I'm not sure if I have anything here that will help us." he mutters [Do I?] He shrugs and then takes one of his borrowed iron spikes and measures whether it will serve to pry into the gap. He then tries maneuvering the link in such a fashion, that he can strike the spike with Ruig's hammer, and thus widen the gap in the chain. He also stops to think for a moment about how much force he could strike the thing with before bursting the barrel and decides to begin slowly and gently. He then looks at Ruig and converses with him for a moment in the dwarvish tounge. His tone and bearing are submissive and respectful. [GM Note]
"Ruig, I realize that it may be a bit of an insult to your hammer, but ..." he cocks his head toward the barrel "Can I borrow that for a sec?"

Re: The Tower
While Kezib maintains his uncomfortable fighting pose, Ruig mumbles "it's just a hammer, son" and hands the weapon over to Draxim.
Draxim doesn't have much trouble loosening the final link in each chain. It seems to be what the thing was designed for... something to hold the lid shut for a time, but then to be opened.
