Re: The Tower
Draxim takes a final look at the barrel to see if there are any tricks or traps that he might have missed, looks around to make sure that no one has objections, and then attempts to pry open the lid.

Re: The Tower
Carefully, Draxim slides the chains through the iron loops and lays them on the ground. Then, working the barrel with an iron spike, he slowly prys open and removes the lid. Draxim doesn't get a good look at what's inside before his very next breath assaults his lungs with the rancid smell of death. The dwarf instantly reels away from the barrel, stumbles across the chamber toward the rising tunnel, and vomits noisily onto the floor.

Madragar, standing nearby, manages to get the hint and turns away, holding his breath. The odor wafts through the chamber causing everyone to cover their noses.

Re: The Tower
Since Madragar had a cloth already tied over his nose and mouth, he simply holds it closer to his face and squints to protect his eyes. Then he tries to examine whatever was in the barrel.

Re: The Tower
A muffled "bleagh" involunarily escapes Madragar's lips. The barrel contains at least one corpse, the pale gray of its face staring upward in a hideous grimace. Its arms and legs are tangled beneath it, the shreds of old rope binding them together. The skin of the naked creature has decomposed to the point of liquifaction and glistens in the flickering torchlight.

Re: The Tower
Madragar backs away from this horror. His mind tries and fails to comprehend the design present in this subterranean complex. Why pickle the dead? What purpose did this chamber serve?

He looks around the room for more clues.

Re: Pass the Comet
"Disgusting Chaos worshippers." Draxim's voice is even more gravelly than usual, and tinged with a most undwarvish weakness. "They were probably saving the bodies to throw into that pit during they're profane rites." Either that or they were keeping them around so that they could bring them back from the dead when..." Draxim lets his sentence trail off and a look of fear creeps over his lumpy mug. He gets up quickly and clumsily rushes over to the lid and grabs it. He starts trying to replace the cover on the barrel and its hideous contents.

Re: The Tower
As Madragar begins searching the place, Draxim rushes forward to replace the lid. He manages to get a hold of the wooden disk but it too is slick with the residue of decomposition. His stomach heaves again and Draxim staggers away to the far side of the chamber, clutching his nose and his abdomen.

Madragar carries his torch into all parts of the cave, peering behind each barrel, but finds nothing.

Re: Pass the Comet
Disgusted, Madragar retreats to the passageway.

"I can find nothing here. Whatever the broo were after, they must already have found it. Unless one of you wishes to search the remaining barrels, I suggest we retreat."

Re: The Tower
"I am (cough cough swallow).... I'm worried. Our freind Ruig says that he still detects the thing's presence. We need to replace the lid on this barrel so that the foul Chaos creature may not possess some other body." Draxim looks miserably and imploringly at Kezib, then dry heaves and looks away, ashamed.

Re: Pass the Comet
Ruig, still gripping his hammer and peering into the darkness, mumbles "I know a little of these Shadows. They can affect the physical world only by crawling into the corpse of a creature once living. This makes them vulnerable as well. I believe we have badly wounded this creature and it has fled to the wall between the worlds... but it is not dead. I don't know how these things are killed. Nor do I know how long it takes them to recover."

Ruig pauses and his face wrinkles into a scowl.

"Perhaps the Lunars were right to seal this place."

Re: The Tower
"Perhaps. Let us tighten our stomachs, hold our noses and destroy the bodies, then, so that the creature has nothing to possess. Then perhaps we can reseal the entrance."

Re: Pass the Comet
"I agree that resealing the entrance is wise, but how do you plan to destroy these corpses?" Ruig asks.

Re: The Tower
"A prolonged beating with your hammer should assure that, even if the spirit occupies them, the bodies will do it no good," speculates Madragar.

Re: Pass the Comet
"Or flame?" Kezib asks, doing his best to keep his composure and not reveal to the group, all the pumpkin bread that he ate earlier in the day.
"Or, I can do my best to replace the lid on the barrel."

Re: The Tower
Ruig has the look of a dwarf that would rather not have his hammer used in the squishy destruction of a bunch of corpses. Moving over to the open barrel he gets between it and the wall and gives it a hard push. The iron shod container hits the ground with a thud and its vile contents spill out onto the chamber floor in a pile.

The corpse has the consistency of wet clay.

Better get a bucket.
Draxim moves to "guard the entrance" Conveniently this is further away from the disgusting corpse pudding. [Am I still feeling weakened?]

[Yes, Draxim is still a little pale and weak in the knees. His morningstar seems unnaturally heavy in his hands.]

Re: Better get a bucket.
As Kezib, Madragar and Ruig stare at the crumpled corpse wondering what to do with it, Draxim looks on from across the chamber. It is a tiny sound, an almost imperceptible squishing, that attracts Draxim's attention. Wheeling around to face the ascending tunnel the dwarf lets out a less than manly cry of shock and alarm. This draws the attention of the other three, and all share a moment of terror and revulsion.

A quivering pool of blackish goo is oozing its way into the chamber from the tunnel. It is shimmering in the torchlight, having the slick look of hot tar, and is decorated by a number of dark green bubbles growing and bursting all over its surface. The bubbles, growing to a light green just before bursting, spatter the immediate area with bits of the black stuff and release small clouds of the familiar noxious vapor.

The horror gripping the four explorers grows more accute when it becomes apparent that the thing, although only a few inches thick, completely covers the tunnel floor from wall to wall and at least fifteen feet up the tube.
